I made this earlier, it's a Bonk smiley. Yeah it's dorky but I'm an adult and I can do whatever I want. :P
If anyone else has any to share feel free to post it on here! I'll add more as I make more. Any requests or suggestions is appreciated.

Looks great! Very nice.
The guy under Scrooge looks like "Guy" from Mighty Final Fight.

Master Higgins is epic

Well said! And great job on the Bonk smiley! ^_^
-
that's my old drink coaster in the top of the pic, the bonk smiley is my new one (http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/2774/pcgs.png)
-
I want to do an R-type ship like the one in Arkhan's pic and other ships from shooties like the soldier series and darius
-
the bonk smiley coaster is a nice idea actually. :D
I want to make the lucky cat from KC.
-
Master Higgins is epic
Yeah wanted to say that. The Meijins high jump made of those perler bead 100% pixel accurate is such awesome.
-
what to do next??? :-k :-k :-k
-
I want to do an R-type ship like the one in Arkhan's pic and other ships from shooties like the soldier series and darius
I always wanted to do the first Boss from R-Type like this, since this is (to me) kind of the coolest, most epic and scariest boss in any 2D video games to date.
-
if you did it pixel by pixel it's take up a whole wall
-
That's pretty dang cool. I especially like the one of Pitfall Harry.
-
Nice work :=)
I need to dig out my old bead art set ;-)
-
My newest piece
Silver Hawk from Darius

Thats good stuff.

That also is one of my favorite boss of all time. Too bad it's such an easy boss. I would have been even more memorable if it was tougher.
Great jobs on the bead arts guys. 16-bit bead arts look so damn good, like that Master Higgins.

Sorry for the necro bump but I didn't find another fitting thread :P
I think I never posted pictures of my bead wall around here so here it is:

That's amazing! I can't wait to see it finished. Looks like you're making great progress!
-
Whoa I've seen pics of that before but didn't realize it was your Dingsbums
-
Holy crow! That's all made out of these bead things? Sa-weeet!
-
Unbelievable cool and also one of the best instant scenery of all video games you have chosen there.
-
Holy cow, I've seen a lot of perler game sprites, but never anything that insane. Amazing work.
I have a friend that makes bead sprites. For me and my fiance, he made TwinBee (from Rainbow Bell Adventure on Super Famicom) and Haohmaru from the Neo Geo Pocket Color version of Samurai Shodown. They're really cool. :) Myself, I've never tried working with perler beads, but I've been doing cross stitch my whole life and have started getting into sprite stitching. I have nothing to show just yet, though (and my first couple planned projects aren't NEC-related anyway).
-
Does anyone remember "shrinky dinks". Been trying to find some myself for awhile. Love the bead art, would also like to see something like shrinky dink keychains.

You do any freelance work?? That looks awesome!

Wow, man, that's incredible!

I didn't notice what that was as I clicked on the 2nd page first. Amazing!

Sorry for the necro bump but I didn't find another fitting thread :P
When I saw the new activity, I immediately thought of re-posted your progress from AO. Then come to see it was YOU that was "rise from your grave" this thread. Now go get more beads, man...I need more R-Type on your wall!
-
This bead art is awesome!!
-
Just looked at this for the first time and it is outta control awesome! Finish it today so I can look at it!
-
STATUS: dijibums R-Type wall punched me in the face. DUDE, THAT IS GOING TO WEIGH ~800 pounds when it's completed. AWESOME. What is that... 90 stone? Just joking, I have no idea.
Does anyone remember "shrinky dinks". Been trying to find some myself for awhile. Love the bead art, would also like to see something like shrinky dink keychains.
They still sell the product, but it has a generic name by arts-n-crafts manufacturers... just ask at the local "Michael's" or equivalent in your neck of the woods. I made some PCE shrinky dinks but I can't remember if I posted pictures here or not... (it was several years ago).

Since you guys gave me so much nice feedback => here is an update

Keeping up the great work dingsbums :)

Man that is just incredible. Can't wait to see it finished!

i wish i had that much of spare time (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)
but i really dig that subject, because for me the r-type's lvl 1 boss screen is one of the most important game moments ever (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

Looks good, how many hours have you put into this.
shit, how much did it cost? haha
-
Most impressive!
-
Along with everyone else I'm curious not only how much time but also how much money you think you have invested in this art. All I can really say is that I seriously think it looks amazing!
How exactly were you able to make it look so damn good? It must of taken a serious amout of preperation.
-
Looks good, how many hours have you put into this.
I started with my room on 2nd July 2011. In hours I can't exactly say it but let me say it this way => a LOT of hours :P
I have a complete thread on ArcadeOtaku about the process (but you have to be a member there to see the thread)
http://forum.arcadeotaku.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=16714
i wish i had that much of spare time
I work 9 hours a day & I also wish I had more spare time to finish it faster 8) :D.
shit, how much did it cost? haha
When the picture is finished it will have nearly 400000 beads which means 400 packages each with 1000 beads. And each package costs 1 Euro = 400 Euro for the beads. But I have to glue the beads to the wall (and you need a strong glue for that). A can of that glue costs 10 Euro and I need 10 cans of that glue = 100 Euro for the glue. So the picture costs 500 Euro when finished (+ a LOOOOOOT of time) => I think that's not that bad :-".
PS: Thanks for the nice comments guys - believe it or not that keeps me going on that thing because sometimes you can get really sick of it .
-
When you finish, you should show it to the people who run spritestitch.com. I'm sure they'd love to put it on the main page. :)
-
WOW! Keep it up! Very impressive.
-
Holly Molly ! You nerds are seriously getting down with your bead art especially you dingsbums !! That room as is already looks amazing .. lol The best Ive ever done with bead art was making fruity ass raver bracelets for myself back in the days .. lol I got alot of self improvement and patience to work on before I can achieve great nerdiness like that .. Great work you guys !!! Oh by the way this pic is NOT of me I promise ! LMFAOL !

You are both insane and a hero!
Impressive doesn't even begin to describe what you are doing.

I hope for you that you never have to move out of this room ;)

I picked up a bead kit for my 5 yr old son today and we had all sorts of fun playing with it. I ended up with this awesomely-mutated version of Bonk!
Sorry for the distant shot - It's really hard to make out close up. :)
The kit came with a square peg board that is only 14x14 which makes finding notable sprites an interesting experience. I was going for the 1-Up version of Bonk seen in the lower right-hand corner of the screen, but somehow I mangled the left side of his face, and now it looks like he's hungry for brains to me. ZOMBIE BONK!
EDIT: Technically, I guess it's the RIGHT side of his face and the LEFT side of the bead-thingy. :P
-
Now go for a fullscale r-type 1lvl boss :)
-
Now go for a fullscale r-type 1lvl boss :)
I move way too frequently to even consider that notion. :D However, when I finally settle down, I will have a room with an R-Type wall, thanks to this thread.

Everything now white have to be black and then I'm done with this thing  .
@tatsujin
I never thought about as doing this thing as a world record => it was just something that I would like to see in a game room :D. But around two months ago I showed it to a very good friend and one of the first things he said was - "that's a world record". This was the first time I googled a little bit around on this subject and found this:
(http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/4051/obamac.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/96/obamac.jpg/)
Quote on the Obama bead picture: .... 372 600 pearls .....
I will also be somewhere around that mark, but that's estimated by me because I never kept exact record of how much beads I have used. And counting that many beads is NOT something I really want to do. + the requirements on the Guiness Records site you have to do to get your record officially aproved also turn me off :?. So at the moment I have no idea
what to do .
I know one thing: It should be finished first :D.
-
can't you just count one horizontal and one vertical line and then multiply them for the approx. used quantum of pearls? :)
-
The problem in your sentence is: ... approx. used quantum of pearls ...
For a world record the number have to be EXACT.
And you could calculate the number like you said IF ..... IF the walls where straight. But since this is a cellar room built in the mid 1960's the walls are NOT straight at all :?. So the only way to get a exact number would be to count them one by one - and I really have not the biggest desire to do that .
-
(http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/6361/aowawa.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/69/aowawa.jpg/)
I ran out of black beads  .
-
how are you adhering those boards to the wall?
-
With this glue 8)

Don't ever move!
Of course if I was buying your house, seeing that in the basement would cause me to buy it immediately, haha.

Great thread I've missed. That R-type is amazing!!!

I have one essential question. Which version/picture did you take as a template for this perler masterwork?
I'm asking because there are certain differences to f.e. the arcade scenery. f.e. the purple shades inthere, which are not in the pixel original. Also there are certain other locs which are looking a bit different (green emerald in the tail, eyes e.g.).
Sorry for asking, I am just curious about
-
@ all
Thank you.
@ Tatsujin
The template was a MAME screenshot of R-Type. I fitted the shot to my wall measurements (which means I squeezed it in height & stretched it in lenght). And yes I know there a (minor) differences but you have to remember that not every colour that is exactly needed for the R-Type shot is available as bead colour = I had to improve a little bit. And it's no problem if you are curious 8).
-
a labor of love, no doubt
-
So you're the R-Type wall guy from ASSEMbler?
Awesome work by the way.

No, he's the R-Type wall guy from Pcenginefx.

WHY DO I WANT TO EAT THIS? Did you tap into the Hostess Chocolate Cupcake gene? I WANT TG-16 Chocolate Cupcake, and it must be completely artificial and chemical-laden, like those beloved Hostess products.

Do you remember these Esteban?

OMG! I've had the pudding pies, but I know I would remember eating a GLOWING GREEN one. I definitely saw all the Turtle products in the store, but I never ate one of those crazy things. I was pretty damn traditional when it came to my HOSTESS PREFERENCES. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

Amazing work on the R-Type wall, and I really dig the TG-16 logo too. :)

That R-Type wall is seriously badass! Amazing work, love all the other bead art in this thread too, makes me want to go to the local craft store and buy a bunch of beads to create characters with :D

There's, what, at least 20-30 pounds of beads glued to his wall? Or am I overestimating?

MOAR!

MOAR!
The ceiling! The ceiling could be filled with the BYDO Armada...

lol, LOL^^
btw. just bought me a perler bead set with 10000 perlers and a 58 x 29 board.
now am ready for some perler action.
will try some arthur and zombies from Makaimura/Ghosts'n'Goblns first :)

I currently only have 16 colors of beads (including black and white) so I have found a new appreciation for the color palette the TG/PCE has.
-
nice ones rolf :)
somehow I would like to revolutionize that whole bead thingens.
1. renctangle instead of round formed beads
2. a true selection of original 8-/16-bit color schemes/palette according the preferred systems f.e. NES, PCE, MD, SFC, even Arcade etc. (any colors available on demand -> special orders etc.)
3. holes only on the back side -> will be tricky for the bonding i know, therefore..
4. glueable from the back -> when the picture is finished, a temporary harden glue sheet will be put over front to hold the beads together. the beads then can be swapped to the back and will be fixed together again with a permanent and strong gluesheet. the temp. gluesheet then can be removed and the front gets a clear glue paint job over the whole surface.
..or so.

Well damn, these are nice!

The only thing I can think of, sadly, is our fellow forum member: wacdonagle.

Holy shit, that is EPIC
-
Thanks, gang! My son and I have spent the weekend sorting one of those big buckets of random perler beads so now I've got a much wider range of colors. :) hopefully I'll have some new pics in the next day or two.
-
I made a Super Star Soldier Ship today (in the pic below next to the Soldier Blade one), but I think with a little tweaking I can make a better one. But first I want to take a crack at the Final Soldier ship (which I think will look awesome!). Here's a pic of my current worktable. :D
(http://risemedia.org/risemedia/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Perler_Worktable.jpg)
I'm having way too much fun with this...
-
those are cool.
-
I think they are kool. I WOULD USE THEM AS XMAS ORNAMENTS.
-
ah, so i'll need me to buy one of these transparent perler boards, so i can copycat them much easier. hehe.
-
ah, so i'll need me to buy one of these transparent perler boards, so i can copycat them much easier. hehe.
Yeah.... not exactly.
Once I capture a sprite from an emulator it's taken into Photoshop and cropped and the background is removed. Removing the BG is sometimes tricky because it can be hard to tell what's part of the sprite and what's the BG. There have been a few sprites I've started on and gave up because the BG is just too busy.
Then I recolor the sprite using a custom palette I created by taking pictures of my beads and sampling them. You can see the custom palette in the top right.
Then I enlarge the image and print it out. But the colors that I see on the screen and the colors that get printed aren't always very consistent (I'm using just regular printer paper, not expensive photo paper). So sometimes it's not always apparent which shade is which. This became a problem with Final Soldier and I had to redo a good chunk of it because I was using the wrong shade of blue.
And the printout isn't the same size as the pegboard, though I'm sure with a little tinkering I could get it to fit. But I find it more useful to have it next to me in case I have to take it back to the computer to compare colors... :)
But Final Soldier is done! I like how it came out. But I'm DONE with beads for the day. That one took longer than I was anticipating...
EDIT: It's no wonder more people don't make Obey bead art. There are just too many damn colors in the sprites! :D Not to mention the perler peg boards are 29x29 and a lot of the sprites are 32x32, which can be done but is a pain. I've been thinking about getting a really big pegboard, but I hear they warp easily (after reading amazon reviews). Still on the fence. I have worked out some really nice, big projects (like title screens), but they would have to be done on a larger pegboard. And I'd need a larger work area. :)

i have two of those pegboards which can be connected (of course) so that i'll get a 58x29. for most sprites higher than 29 pixels (which are most of them in the later 8 to 16bit era) it does work perfect.
that's also a reason why i totally would like to re-invent that whole perler thing as mentioned on a previous page.

Neato beads, rofl!
Removing the BG is sometimes tricky because it can be hard to tell what's part of the sprite and what's the BG. There have been a few sprites I've started on and gave up because the BG is just too busy.
In Magic Engine you can turn on/off the background (sprites too if you want) on the fly, making it child's play to get just the sprite. I've not much experience with other emulators, but I imagine they all do it.

Damn. These are incredible. The closest I've come to Perler bead are is when I got a Lite-Brite back in the 80's for Christmas.

Cool tip! I'm using Ootake. I'll have to see if that's do-able. Should would help streamline the process a bit. :)

magic engine is free as a 5 min trial limitation per game (iirc). nuff time to rip some awesome sprites :D

Wow you guys are amazing all of these are really nice.

I made a Super Star Soldier Ship today (in the pic below next to the Soldier Blade one), but I think with a little tweaking I can make a better one. But first I want to take a crack at the Final Soldier ship (which I think will look awesome!). Here's a pic of my current worktable. :D

I'm having way too much fun with this...
O_O
That blue ship towards the bottom right looks SO familiar!!!

Guilty! Merry Christmas, Joshua! And that's the ship from the Twinbee series! Fun cute-em-up series (though the play mechanics can be pretty challenging).
I made these for my son for Christmas. He's a huge fan of anything Plants vs Zombies:

Wow, great job!
You guys got a place where you are selling these at?

Thanks!
I've thought some about trying to sell them, but I can't imagine anyone wanting to pay what it would cost to make these worthwhile for me. ;)
I see people selling similar bead art sprites on etsy and ebay for $5-10 apiece and I don't know how they do it. Maybe because they are sticking to smaller sprites with a lower color count and can sell a lot of them, but I can't imagine hordes of people picking these up.
And I spend an absurd amount of time working these out in Photoshop before I even sit down to assemble them.
Plus, I have to keep a ton of different colors on hand. For the zombie above, I ran out of 2 colors and had to improvise in a couple of areas, but that means I've got to go out and buy 2 more colors (at least) to do any more of them.
If I knew I could crank out a lot of these and knew they'd sell, I'd do it in a heartbeat, because it's fun and somewhat relaxing. But for the time being, I think I'll keep doing them as gifts and just for the fun of it.

I hear ya man. Either way, keep up the great work and maybe do a few small ones that you can sell in bulk ;)

I've also thought about getting a table at some local craft show, but then I'd have to focus on making stuff that would sell. Mario, Zelda, Mega Man, Pokemon, My Little Pony all seem to be pretty popular right now... meh. I really like the process of coming up with something new. :)
I'd be happy to take on a commissioned piece, if anyone's ever interested, though!
Will work for Obey!
