Hello!
I've recently managed to get my original white PC Engine working again and now i need some games to play on it.
I like STG's, Zelda types, scrolling beat 'em ups and MetroidVania type games. I got the PCE with the intention of playing some fine old school STG's, but I don't really know much about the platform. Most 10 ten type lists i've found so far tend to focus a bit on the Turbo CD games for the system, but I'm limited to jap HU card.
Looking on eBay some seem to be going for fair amounts of cash so i'm wondering if there are any fairly common but awesome games in the above genres that people could recommend? If it's something not in that genre but it's awesome anyway I'll also be interested.
The only games I have for it so far are R-type 1, and Super Star Soldier.

Adventure Island -Metroidvania Bloody Wolf -Run N Gun Neutopia I & II -Zelda Dungeon Explorer -looks like a Guantlet clone, but is one of the greatest games ever made
If by STG, you mean shooters, these are good and cheap-

Unfortunately, the PCE is pretty weak when it comes to scrolling beat em ups, HuCard or CD. Here are some alternatives-

violent soldier isn't cheap anymore. Some ppl want around 50 bucks for it.

"hit-japan" is a great ebay seller for PC-Engine games. I picked up Super Star Soldier, Bomberman '94, and Final Soldier from him for about $10 each. There are also pretty regular sales going on here in the forums.
I second pretty much all of Black Tiger's recommendations, btw.
Alien Crush and Devil's Crush are both great, relatively inexpensive pinball games (afaik). No other console (imo) has come close to creating really fun pinball games, and the PCE was blessed with 2 of 'em!

That's Nintega logic. Like how Ys III is so expensive because you can sometimes find someone asking $99 for it. Never mind how regularly it sells for $20 - $30. :P
If you check eBay, some people haven't sold it at $50 asking price. :wink:
Although $50 isn't cheap, it's not expensive either. It's not worth spending that much on that game though, if you still need a CD-ROM setup. :)

Most have listed for what you're looking for but i can think of two beat'em ups.
Though neither of them are cheap and both are cd titles.

For "Metroidvanias" The PCE versions of Wonder Boy in Monster Land (Bikkuriman World) and Wonder Boy III the Dragon's Trap (Adventure Island) are some of my favorites along with Cadash. Valkyrie No Densetsu is a great Zelda type although a bit more linear. For shooters in addition to what's been mentioned I suggest anything from the "Soldier" series including Gunhead as well as R-Type I & II and Raiden.

Thanks for all the replies so far. There's not much at reasonable prices on eBay at the moment, but I think GunHed and soldier blade are getting towards the top of my list now.
Any guide prices for these? Everything's just buy it now for £50 at the moment on ebay at the moment.
Gonna fire up an emulator to demo some of these first I reckon, I dunno how much of a problem Japanese might be on some of the non shooters listed.
I've seen some busted cd rom units on ebay for $50-$60 ish would that be worth it? Seems a bit much for something not working, but I've yet to see a working one.

Kyukyoku Tiger, PC Denjin and any of the Soldier games are worthy additions to a shooter collection. Also Tatsujin if you like things difficult.

For these type of games you really want to get a CD unit. Regards Zelda aka Action RPGs there's a Zelda clone on HuCard called Neutopia/Neutopia II but really you would want to play the US versions of these (unless you can read Japanese). On CD you should definitely check out Ys, again the US versions and the fan translation of Ys IV.
Regards decent scrolling beat 'em ups on CD there's Galaxy Gayvan, Crest Of Wolf, Double Dragon II and Downtown Nekketsu.

Don't waste your time piecing together a CD setup. It's overall cheaper and more convenient in the long run to just get a Duo R/RX system. Depending on how patient you are, you can get one off of eBay for $100 - $200 and play 99% of the PCE library with it with less of a chance of encountering hardware problems and the most likely issue to possibly come up (lens replacement) is cheap and easy.

It's still the cheapest and safest bet to get a Duo R/RX and keep the white PCE than it is to attempt any other combination. Unless by adaptor you mean the Interface Unit, in which case it might be cheaper to try to find a loose CD-ROM, but most are junk and those that aren't are still harder to service and overpriced and the Interface Unit can have issues...
Right now there are Duo R's for sale on eBay for under $150 BiN with Best Offer options, but better deals pop up regularly.

Don't ya mean three of 'em? Time Cruise is good fun too, with more varied game play and prehistoric golf!

I dig Time Cruise, but I don't think it reaches the level of awesomeness as the Crush games. Man, I totally forgot about the golf thing. It has been a long time since I last played it. Maybe I ought to revisit it and see if my opinion of the game have changed over the years.

Time Cruise II suffers from a dull main board. They should have added little creatures running around to spice it up a bit.

As an update: I've decided to get a busted CD and fix it, I've also got r-type part 2 and side arms on the way. Might get gunhed also. Still looking for a cheap Soldier Blade.

IMO Final Soldier is is a much better buy then Soldier blade because it's just as much fun and usually 1/3 the price. Gunhed is a top priority too. One of the best shmups ever made.

Theres an interesting and cheap game called Efera and Jiliora for the PCE CD. It's action RPG excitement and you can enjoy it with 0 knowledge of Japanese.
You may not know whats happening but it wont kill your fun any.
Same goes for the Xak games.
Beat em up wise, you can always check out Legendary Axe 1 and 2, and Riot Zone. Riot Zone ain't perfect but it's still fun.....
and there's also Keith Courage and China Warrior. You require these games.
