Title: Legendary Axe 1 or 2?
Post by: Damon Plus on November 02, 2011, 07:11:45 PM
I've played the first one and I find it quite a nice game, with an unique flow, and great graphics/music. I've heard the second one is considered a very different game, and watching youtube videos, I can't say I disagree with that afirmation. It seems a very dark game, but I don't find the environments as good as some reviews say. Which is better?

Both are very good games.  I do prefer Legendary Axe II as it has more complex level design and better controls, IMHO.  There is a variety of weapons and you can hurt enemies by jumping on them while pressing the attack button.  The music and sound effects also stick out in my mind as being particularly good.

I agree with the above. Both games are very good. Each may be different from eachother, but in some cases that can be a good thing.

I prefer the music in LA, but the tune-age in LA II always reminded me of Dungeon Explorer. And that's a good thing. :)

I enjoy LA a tad more then LA II. Might be cause that was the first TG16 game i beat and was a joy playing it.
Dont get me wrong LA II is pretty Awesome in its own right but never thought it was a TRUE sequel to LA.

I like LA1 more because its all tribal nonsense.

LA2 is different.

They both rule though

I agree with the general sentiment here.  I have both and they're both great games.  No need to pick which one is better, really.  If you like the first one, then you obviously like that style of gameplay, so you should get the second one.

If you enjoy Rastan then you'll like LA II. They are very similar in style and gameplay. Only LA II is a bit darker. Sometimes depressingly so.

You know, I always thought that the music in Legendary Axe II was amazing, especially if you are lucky enough to have a stereo set up instead of just RFU. That game just sounds amazing. Not saying Legendary Axe itself has bad music, but something just sits with me in the second game. It sounds so good!

Love 'em both, but prefer Legendary Axe 2.  With part 1, I play until I die.  With part 2, if I die I at east attempt to keep going.  The music is part 2 is awesome.  Dark and somber.

Its a shame they didn't release both of them remade for the super cd or better yet arcade cd. :)
BTW, I second the sentiment that both games are good.

Why not have a third game as an Arcade CD? That would have been awesome!

Sounds good enough.

About how much would it cost to get Legendary Axe 2 with the cardboard box? (as I like them, hehe)

I prefer 2 because 1 has some technical flaws that drive me mad.

Oh, and 2 is supposed to be dark. The Japanese version is called Dark Legend, afaik.

I've cleared both axe games, as well as shapeshifter, and i prefer axe 1 over axe 2.

The one thing that axe 2 has going for it is that to me, most of the sprites have a much more polished look. Axe 1 has more interesting and challenging stages. Axe 2 was a total breeze for me while some parts of axe 1 were quite challenging.

I gotta say, I think I enjoyed the actual play experience of Axe 1 over 2. It just felt right.

1 was only challenging to me because the gameplay wasn't as polished. Swap 1's stage design with 2's game engine and suddenly 2 will be the more challenging one.

They are both must owns IMO. As a kid I preferred Legendary Axe II, probably cause it was easier, but nowadays I think Legendary Axe I is the better game. Aesthetically I really love part II for the music and overall dark tone of the entire game, not to mention the bizarre ending. Gameplay wise I is more satisfying to me.

Yeah I just love to overall vibe in Legendary Axe compared to LA II. There is something about the game that I can't quite put my finger on. It just has a magic to it that the second one doesn't have.

I like both, but really like the atmosphere and controls of the second one. It reminds me a lot of the classic Castlevania games but with a lot better control and weapon variety which is basically perfect for me.

I don't agree that it is about polish. I think the games were just shooting for a different feel. 2 is faster paced, about getting in there and hacking shit up. 1 is a bit slower, but that's fine with me. Rushing ahead will get your ass killed in a way that it won't in 2.

Truth told, I really don't think this discussion thread would be happening at all if these two unrelated games weren't released under the same header in the US. Someone mentioned Rastan Saga II. Why isn't that being brought up as well? It's a hack n' slash game with a similar feel, and is by far the worst of the 3, IMO.

Oh great, time to get some heat because I loved the first Legendary Axe and was definitely disappointed with the sequel for many reasons. I even did a couple of videos of them awhile ago here:

1 is way better.
