You want a Duo-R plus arcade card duo, for teh cheapness

OR, a Briefcase unit with arcade card pro... but make sure you buy it from someone who confirms the CD is working or has been repaired.

The Arcade Card duo only works in duos.  The Pro works in all systems.

overall, yeah, the Duo-R.

my local shop seems to carry "Turbo-DUO's" (local mom and pop game shop) but no "DUO-R's" is there a difference? they seem to want 279 USD for it. is that considered reasonable? sorry for so many questions and again of course still open to all offers here of course.

A TurboDuo (US version) are generally pricey ($279 is no bargain, unless maybe if it's minty fresh and boxed/complete), and it'll need a region mod (either internal or external) to play PCE games and to use the Arcade Card Duo.  Therefor, it'll be cheaper to get a PCE Duo/Duo-R/Duo-RX; don't shy away for the original PCE Duo if you can get one cheap enough or one that's already had the caps changed (a common problem, easily remedied by peeps here).

A Japanese PC Engine Duo or Duo-R is going to be considerably cheaper than a US Turbo Duo. A US Turbo Duo would go for more than the recommended Duo-R. Also if you were to buy a US TurboDuo you'd need a converter to use the arcade card required to play Sapphire.

The Duo-R is basically like the remodel of the Duo .   Japan got the Duo-->Duo-R--->Duo-RX.

R/Rx are basically the same.  Just find an R.

so would it be reasonable to believe that anything between 175-200 for a Pc engine duo-r would be a good deal?
I had so far 1 private offer here but just want to make sure i get the best deal available.

175-200 shipped with all cords and controllers is reasonable. Game of Japan has it for 140.00 + shipping for example.

What country are you in?

If your friend had a PC Engine as a kid he's probably not in the United States (unless he imported one or came from overseas).  But if your local store has a Turbografx Duo, you probably are in the United States.

The reason why so many people recommended the PC Engine Duo-R here is simple: the later American products were barely marketed at all and are going to be hard to find cheap.  That's why the American Duo costs more than the Japanese Duo.  So everyone's pretty much right: get a Japanese Duo-R and an Arcade Card Duo.  You will need to have it modified for American card games, however.

I have an extra Duo or Duo-R I could sell you! I'm in Japan though, so shipping will be a little expensive but I can lower the price enough so even with the shipping I think I can make you a pretty good deal. Shoot me a PM if you are interested!
