Title: Sherlock Holmes
Post by: soop on February 29, 2012, 12:10:13 AM
I'm a big Sherlock Holmes fan, so I snapped up my only US release - a sealed Sherlock Holmes for £12.

Just going by Gamefaqs however, it could be pretty bad.  Opinions?

I have them both...  I hate them...  I guess for the time, it was cool for the FMV effect.  But the game itself, I just cant get into.

Damn.  I'll have a pop at it anyway, no use keeping a game sealed.  I'll imagine it to be a retro LA Noire

I picked up the US (first one? only one?) twice, once in the early 90's around release and then again two years ago on a bulk purchase. Both times, I could not get into it and sold them. I'd take JB Harold over it. The "video" is a gimmick and poor at best.

I had fun playing both of them in the early 90s and solving the little mysteries at the time. Once you've figured out the motives and everything needed to go to court you can solve the case and win. I think both games have three cases each, once you've cleared all the cases there's minimal replay value.

Even though there's not much replay value and the FMV is pretty crap, I'm a connoisseur of cheese and enjoy 'em for what they are.  If you end up not liking it much, at least it's short and didn't cost you much.

It's a cool game which uses fmv, but it's not what would become a typical "fmv game". The fmv could be replaced by still images and the voice with text and it would play the exact same.

It's just a digital comic/adventure game like Snatcher, The Space Adventure, etc. The acting is very good by game standards at the time.

If you're a SH fan, then you should really enjoy it. :)

I think it's great for what it is. I had fun playing it bitd. Haven't had another go for a while. I totally forgot what happens in each case, so I think the replay value is good if you shelf for 15 years lol

Ha!  Good point - it's been so long it'd be like brand new to me too.

At the time when the SH games came out it was a cool thing to see and play on a game system. I enjoyed the cases and found them fun. But once you solve them the game has no replay value AT ALL.

It was fun at the time, and certainly strained my 11 year old brain. There's a DVD version if you get sick of the hardware limitations- http://www.amazon.com/Sherlock-Holmes-Consulting-Detective/dp/B0000365E2/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1330585256&sr=1-1

Be sure to have a little notebook or somethin to write down leads ya come across in interviews, sometimes the people give you more than one lead.  That's what I did, I wonder what happened to that notebook...I had a ton of notes n there

I remember really getting into the first mystery on the first game bitd, but I never solved the other mysteries.  Within the last year or so I went back to give the other mysteries a shot and just couldn't get into it.  Still, I'd like to give it another shot one of these days.

Well, I couldn't get into it.   The whole thing is just too clunky, the interface, and there's so much to do.  Plus, even though it's a brand new sealed game, the FMV skips.  Plus the acting is f*cking terrible, and the English accents in most cases are laughable.

It's like someone had an idea for a great game and got an accountant to make it.

The FMV skipping is due to the way it was encoded, I initially thought it was a problem with my disc as well. I think in Sherlock Volume 2 that's fixed since it's a Super CD with more memory.

This sounds silly, but did you try cleaning the disc?  I got Sherlock 2 brand new a few years ago and the FMV was skipping.  I thought my lens was going bad until I noticed a clear, filmy residue covering half of the brand-new disc.  I wiped it off and the CD played fine.

I think I blew on it, but the game would still suck! My only TG16 game, go figure!
