Title: new member question... what is Turbob?
Post by: tpivette on March 14, 2012, 02:28:24 PM
Ok, this may seem completely stupid (I'm sorry), but I've seen the word "Turbob" mentioned quite a few times in what seems reference to TG16 games or the system itself.

Please indulge a new member... what is Turbob, and what relationship does it have to the TG16?

Just more idiotic slang.

I think it was originally someone mis-typing, they were typing Turbo, & added a "b" at the end.

Like others have said, it probably started as a mistype and then caught on as slang.

Turbob = Turbo related stuff

Its very general in its use...

"I picked up some Turbob today!"  - I bought some turbo grafx games today
"I going to go play Turbob" - I'm going to go play Turbo Grafx 16
"I'm a Turbobler!"  - I'm a turbo grafx player :D

The Some important NEWS about the PC Engine! (http://www.pcenginefx.com/forums/index.php?topic=6927.0) thread (especially the original entry) is pretty cool on its own.

Pardon the threadjack, but I'm not sure I'm aware of the history behind cook... can someone explain that one to me?

I did a review of Minesweeper here: http://www.pcenginefx.com/forums/index.php?topic=10254.25
and somebody latched on to the Cook character.  I guess now is a good time to mention something I noticed when originally reviewing the game... is it just me or does Cook look like the old stereotypical cartoon depiction of a person of African descent, just painted white?  That's the impression I got.

Or is he somehow just a duck-like character in a minesweeping video game?

I was wondering the same thing. I didn't want to jump to conclusions, but it *certainly* seems as if Cook could be based on a racial stereotype.

And, as we know, this wouldn't be the first time for a video game character to be traced back to racism/sexism/homophobia/etc.

Cook's ambiguity is what intrigues me (as you said, he could be a duck), and I hope his origins aren't abominable. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgsad.png)

I would like to hear other folks' ideas, because "Cook" is, literally, a cook by profession, which can only fuel the debate...
