Title: Atlantean: Deep Blue's Sister!
Post by: Arkhan on May 22, 2012, 01:52:46 AM
Work on this has recommenced in my basement command center.
I want to ask all of you a few things before I proceed. The most important one being the poll question. I'm not going to fiddledick with 6 button control noodling if only like 2 people even want that.
Ok maybe that's all I wanted to ask.
TO CLARIFY: THIS IS FOR AN OPTIONAL 6 BUTTON SUPPORT. ITS ALREADY GOT THE CONTROL SCHEME MENTIONED BELOW. I'VE BOLDED IT NOW, INCASE YOU MISSED IT.
Any questions?
:)
Right now, I am working on getting the landers to lock in and grab the sea monkey people in a nice looking manner.
Also: Before anyone asks: I lessened the numbers of enemies as opposed to real defender for 2 reasons:
1) These are 16x16 sprites. If you put as many things on screen as Defender, you can barely move. The sprites in Defender are half the size of Atlantean. 2) We have to keep it sane for the given platform!
It also means I couldn't do particle effects.
But it also works out because I am fairly certain particle effects underwater would look kind of dumb.

I demand mouse support!!!!!!1!!11!!!!one!!
I can't imagine why such a game would need six buttons, and you haven't explained what the extra buttons would be used for, so I voted 'no'.

How many can you have on screen now without slow down?
I think the current controller setup should work fine. Image Fight has the speed mapped to the Select button.
But it also works out because I am fairly certain particle effects underwater would look kind of dumb.
Sort off:

It's hard to gauge slowdown right now because its still in the pre-optimization stage. The code is pretty tight so far, and thankfully most of the enemies in Defender aren't too bright. They're just a nice mix of different behaviors that compliment each other.
That slow moving bomber seems retarded til he plants a bomb and goes away... and you then have to fly around the bombs to avoid the swarmers and baiters. :)
but, I anticipate having like 20+ sprites on screen at once with no slowdown. More if you include the parallax-coral/rooftops. They ARE sprites, even if they don't do much for you.
Not because this is the speed limit, but because anything else on screen and the game will just be a giant mess on screen, and not be very fun to play because you will just crash into shit cheaply. :)

Ah, I see. I still vote no, as using buttons instead of the d-pad seems confusing to my simple mind. I'm not against having the option, though, just as long as a 6-button pad isn't mandatory.
Title: Re: Atlantean: Deep Blue's Sister!
Post by: Arkhan on May 22, 2012, 04:06:01 AM
I'm just gauging interest in the 6 button feature. If like 2 people want it, sorry, it's probably not going to get put in.
Oh, ok. Yeah I would be down for that option and corndogs!
Title: Re: Atlantean: Deep Blue's Sister!
Post by: nodtveidt on May 22, 2012, 04:44:33 AM
The poll is misleading. No one "requires" 6-button support, so even people who think it'll be nice to have are still going to vote "no" because they don't require it. :P
And I feel sorry for those fingerless people who can't eat corndogs.

Someone might require 6-button support and refuse to play it otherwise.

Would you consider including an option for more orthodox, non-defender controls as well? I'm OK with Defender's scheme, but sometimes it's nice to just hit left to go left.
Instead of particle effects, you could have a little cloud of bubbles sprite that floats up to the surface when an enemy is killed. It if is discreet it shouldn't clutter much and you wouldn't need to do collision for it.

... You already played Atlantean, and saw this exact control scheme you speak of, in action, last year lol.
I guess I need to clarify. I'll edit the original post.

There are already ambient bubble sprites for fun. Everything explodes when it dies. I have 0 intention of figuring out how to shoehorn in some new graphical happenings. I'm already out of sprites because of the parallax

You are spriting it up.
Also, I believe there is some miscommunication over the whole controls thing, so I'll just see you at the CCAG in June. I don't remember how it played, only how it looked. : )

You just move the Dpad around to fly. Left is reverse if youre flying right, and right is reverse if you're flying left!
:)
Its standard, sensible DPad use.

No.
and if the majority don't vote for 6 buttons, im not even bothering to put it in, lol
I wasn't planning on putting it, and will only do so if enough 6 button-fans can present me a reasonable explanation as to why they would hate playing with the d-pad and it would ruin their lives forever

You also use select to choose bombs type . it's also usefull for those who prefer blasts on button 6 8)

I think on the standard PCE controller buttons I and II should be relabeled IX and IIX, because X makes everything more awesome. How will Atlantean be upgraded to take advantage of this new awesomeness?
Title: Re: Atlantean: Deep Blue's Sister!

It's the awesomeness that prompts this controller.
I'll just sell each copy with a TurbobPad that says ATLANTEAN PAD on it.

Thanks!

An update:
I played some Defender yesterday at the arcade that's about an hour away..
After giving it some thought and fiddling, there are some other aspects of Defender that I may not end up putting into Atlantean, again, mostly for screen-clutter reasons. Defender had a nice big bitmapped screen with tiny-tiny graphics. In console-o-fying it, this advantage is lost unless I do like Defender did on NES and keep the art all tiny and shit, and to be honest, if that were the case, I wouldn't even bother making the game.
The one glaring thing I noticed is this:
Being able to shoot the humanoids. The art is all too big and spritey now. You're likely going to nail the humanoids way too much, especially if you're cruising the surface of the map.
I am going to see how the difficulty is without being able to, and if it feels right, I probably won't add it in. I really do get the feeling that having it in place would make the game un-fun. The humans would be dead sooner than the arcade game since the screen-proportions are way different. Since this is Defender inspired and not a 1:1 clone, I think it will be OK.
The advantage to not doing this means I can make the abduction-setup look cooler. The sprites can overlap. It will look neat.
I understand that shooting the humanoids adds various depths to the game (shoot them all, kill the mutants with the reverse glitch)... and it increases the difficulty since you have to aim good when shooting the Landers...
so, does anyone have any input on this?

I know this is probably heresy, but I've always found the original Defender very clunky and awkward to control, making it frustratingly difficult to play. It sounds like your tweaks will make the game much more enjoyable, so I'm all for it!

I am going for a more streamlined, console playability style.
It will still have the slippery movement, but I am really trying to make it tight and smooth.
Sounds kinky. :)

Well, if you are eliminating the radar/mini-map so that we can't tell what's going on off-screen, then that should certainly off-balance the advantage of not having to worry about killing the humans. Might be nice to have SOME kind of indicator when humans are abducted as to which way is closer to get to them, left or right, though.

I used to play that way - it's certainly an im portant element of Defender. I think you're just going to have to try it out and see what it's like.
Title: Re: Atlantean: Deep Blue's Sister!
Post by: Arkhan on May 28, 2012, 05:28:25 AM
yeah. I will put it in, but its probably going to make the game iffy.
Right now, I definitely have it so you cant shoot the humanoids while they are being abducted.
The reason for this is:
1) They're all up in the jelly fish. It looks sweet cause the tentacles are covering them 2) It makes no f*cking sense in Defender that you can shoot the human who's randomly dangling off the bottom of a UFO. He's as tall as the UFO. That makes no sense either.
lol
So, it'll likely be that you can shoot them on the ground, or if they're falling

I got a Sea Monkey PS1 game.
anyway, some of you got to see the footage of the game in person.
Feedback was high on the controls and the art.
This is a good sign.
I was told "man, this inertia is really inertia-y. I like it"

The only REAL problem with really interia-y controls is that underwater inertia would naturally be dampened. But maybe it is space water, so it is OK.

I voted "NO", but I'm with henry: definitely include 3-button support. I have a bunch of 3-button pads (they are my default pad).
I still don't have a 6-button, and I don't want to be left out. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcg0.html)
Title: Re: Atlantean: Deep Blue's Sister!
Post by: Arkhan on July 16, 2012, 04:30:53 AM
So, I am not going to be providing 6 button support. It doesn't seem quite worth it at this point.
Also, I tried it out some.
It SUCKS.
It is not like the arcade controls in which the reverse button is right next to your joystick hand and you can just plop your thumb down and turn.
It's disorienting. You can't easily reverse and shoot because it requires the same hand. So, screw that shit.
In other news, you'll all be getting 3 shots. They move fast. Like, 8 pixels per frame fast. Any faster and it looks retarded.
I've got the shots working like I want them to, finally. Even at 8 pixels/frame, the collisions seem to be sound.
Next up, is going to be having enemies return fire.
I have to take some creative liberties with Atlantean VS. Defender.
We aren't using a blitter, and cannot do all the shit on screen that Defender did.
It seems to be OK so far though, especially since the Defender art was tiny and lent itself well to lots of shit on screen.
Atlantean uses 16x16 sprites. All of that stuff really does clutter the screen, fast.
It won't be radically different though. You'll still have mine droppers, a$$holes that follow you, a$$holes that blow up and launch things that follow you, and all of that.
and the 10 man pickup strategy will not work for you in Atlantean.
That was where you could grab all the guys and hold them and slow the game down because the machine would draw all the humanoids on screen (on top of each other).
PCE can handle that no problem.
So, no cheating.
and there wont be any option where you can get the mutants to all come out, and then do the reverse bug and easily pot shot them either!
YEAH

Basically, the enemies return fire now. I am working out some kinks/fine tuning it at this point. It works, but I don't like the ranges they kind of lead the shot a bit, so you end up having an awful time trying to not die.
It's too hard! No good.
Once this is all bashed out, I am going to have landers + mutants w/ shots that can KILL YOU.
but then, expect a break from Atlantean for just a little. I have to work on Inferno. It's got a deadline of 12/31/2012 since it's for a contest. Otherwise, I would not pause Atlantean.

(3) I love the Atlantean Babies, especially how they will fall to the ocean floor and EXPLODE if they can't be saved.
(4) When Atlantean Babies are saved (by placing them tenderly on ocean floor), I'll be happy if there is a pleasant (subtle!) sound to indicate that the baby is safe (for the meantime). (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcds.html) Actually, in general, I think most repetitive sound effects should be subtle (muffled) to prevent them from becoming grating. My two cents on the soundscape (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcds.html).
So far, Atlantean is WONDERFUL.

Lookin' sexy, except for the laggy paralax sprite overlaps.
That problem magically goes away during the late-stage optimization. It's doing that right now because of HuC's awesome array accessing skills.
I save this for last since once you do it, it becomes way harder to debug/deal with.
I think I am going to envelope the abduction-ray sound a bit so it isn't as spastic.
I like the mutate noise, and the enemy shot came out good. It's got a nice bullet sound. It's very Konami sounding, to me.
and yes, there will be a little soft chimey sound when the Atlanteans touch down. I love that they explode into oblivion when they die. Everything in the 80s explodes when it dies. There is no other way.
It's fleshing out quite nicely. There are a few hangups with the shots, but it's nothing I can't tweak til I like it. :)

I think it would be funny if the Atlanteans went splat when falling from too high a height. Then again, I'm easily amused by things that go splat.

Man, love that music!!! I want the 20-minute megamix so I can listen to it on the freeway.
As far as the babies go, would it be possible to put Atlantean bases along the seafloor where you could drop the babies off for extra points a la Choplifter? You already have some structures in the background which you could use. I think that would add an interesting gameplay element and would give the player some satisfying resolution rather than having the babies just sitting on the floor like so many bags of blood.

I think they should yell "Bonus" when you save them....
Seriously, it's looking great!
It would be cool if you could mimic talking underwater. like a simple "Thanks" or "Arigato" :)
I looked for a youtube vid of the effect I was thinking, this was one of the cooler sounding clips, but maybe you could pull off something clearer. :)
Maybe they could make some bubbles when they talk too (assuming they have lungs and not gills) - anatomy lesson for Atlanteans needed.

I'd love to do the whole sampled-talking-underwater thing, but it'd be a royal pain in the dick.
So, here a few things that are finalized here:
1) No 6-button support. Sorry to the 7 crab-handed people that want to play Atlantean all goony. It's not playable with 6 buttons anyways. Trying to reverse is disorienting and sucks.
Ok, that's it actually.
I don't think I will be posting a playable beta of the game. Just footage for everyone to touch themselves to.

Using the PSG's direct sampling mode interrupts the MML player stuff, so you have to do magic and trickery to get it to work.
For sf2 capcom don't use magic  i think this should be a problem if you are using all the voices for psg musics .. I am using a 2 channels sample player for chuck no-rice, and it's close to be smooth (my HSYNC interrupts are delayed) in 1,76 mhz CPU mode ..

No, you 're right, but i will try to use both for my next project . I thing it's possible, without too many cpu usage .
Title: Re: Atlantean: Deep Blue's Sister!
Post by: Arkhan on August 08, 2012, 09:58:49 AM
The problem isn't the CPU usage. It's the synchronization of things.
The PSG Player expects things to come in like an assembly line. If you go changing the channel to samples, start shooting stuff out, and then flip back, everything will fall out of sync with itself.

Looking great! I am, however, concerned about the timing of the music. I'm sure you'll probably iron that out eventually. I'm partially concerned, cuz I can detect a slight indescrepancy(sp?) in the timing of when the music loops in Pyramid Plunder. It's almost flawless, but I swear I hear it kinda jolt for lack of a better word, which isn't so bad for PP, but, I for the pulse pounding music & gameplay of Atlantean, I personally want it to loop flawlessly if possible.
Title: Re: Atlantean: Deep Blue's Sister!
Post by: Arkhan on March 16, 2013, 03:59:53 PM
That's because the rest of the channels have to wait for the echo to catch up when it loops. :-/
Kinda unavoidable. If there's no echo, there's not jolt. But, the echo is awesome. I like it, so I chose that over the other option!

Looking damn great, I honestly can't believe you're using that many sprites to simulate parallax, I thought something on that level would produce some hardcore (read: ugly) sprite clipping, as in R-Type.
Meanwhile I still can't figure out how to display a tile on screen, I have a long way to go hahaha.

There is some clipping, but luckily, the way I set it up, the thing that ends up clipping is the big dopey coral towers, as opposed to stuff you actually care about! :)
It's something I'll try to fix, but I might just live with it. It's not too bad. Usually only happens on the bottom row because of the rooftops.

and yes everyone, you'll notice some other speed goofiness, like the minefields sort of chug across the screen. That stuff will all move faster and smoother once everything is in place and optimized.
As it stands though, the game is often moving and updating almost every sprite the PCE can possibly update.

You will get a sound test in Atlantean, but having the music changeable on the fly would be kind of lame since the music wouldn't be as exciting as it changes from portion to portion.

I watched the new video, and I must say that I am quite impressed. It looks very professional, like something that NEC would put out back in the day. The background with the multiple layers is gorgeous and a real showstopper. It's the first time that I've felt like a PCE homebrew has achieved something that looks like an official game. You've come a long way since Insanity, Arkhan! I applaud you.

Outside of more playtesting to de-a$$hole the difficulty and locate any new bugs, all the game needs is optimization. It runs at a steady 30FPS and then shoots back to 60FPS after enemies clear away, meaning I should be able to locate that sweet spot where I fix all the right things and get all the speed ever!!!1123445.
Then, I spend time polishing it and dealing with Sunteam Pauls' 90000 palette images that give me headaches, :)

No, the game is not 100% done, I'm wrapping it up basically.
Once its ready, I am basically doing first come first serve, but giving the PCEFX veteran-folk first dibs for various reasons related to "You guys helped this happen." .
Anyone who misses the boat goes on the list so we can see how many people didn't get one for the next batch/etc.
So, yeah, there will likely be a mad-retard-dash of panicked people trying to get one ASAP.
Don't worry though. Everyone will get one. It would be dumb to only let like 40 people play the game on a card.
ALSO:
Some of you asked about "can I have a ROM when I buy it."
The answer is yes, and I am going to put incriminating information in the ROM so you don't go thrusting it into the internet.
Expect like "I LOVE BLOWING DUDES" on the title screen or something, with your address right below it.

Some of you asked about "can I have a ROM when I buy it."
The answer is yes, and I am going to put incriminating information in the ROM so you don't go thrusting it into the internet.
Expect like "I LOVE BLOWING DUDES" on the title screen or something, with your address right below it.
lol. I am one of those peeps. :)

Wowza, that is BAD ASS!
Can't wait to get my hands on this one. I hope you keep the high score contest alive and well once sent, even if the prize is only for a few of your pubes or something.

That case is gorgeous Arkhan. Love how you have the Aetherbyte logo travelling down the side like that.

Ah sweet, so basically the internet will crash when they go up for order! :D
Cool, I wouldn't mind having the rom as well.

I assume the robin-egg-blue plastic is an homage to Color Dreams? ;)

I only have Ave 6 pads, I wouldn't mind using a proper PCE pad however.

That was the first thing I noticed. It was one of those "holy f*ck this is cool" moments. :D

So cool, have been watching the blog and Facebook, hope the ore order start time is friendly to internationals :). The case looks awesome, the logo is sweet, is it fairly chunky? Do u plan n doing a different colour per game? That would be pretty cool, maybe not financially great but sure cool :)..
I assume and hope pre orders are limited to one per person.? Each case labelled so you can see who pawns one on eBay and then publicly flog them :)

If I were sexually attracted to video games (like some of you guys seem to be at times), I would totally be jerking off to those pics. Well done, Arkhan. Those cases and hucards look amazing!

Hey, thank OldMan for the case stuff. I just picked the colors and the logo, lol.
He's the one that subjected himself to plastic-fumes/etc. to make those beasts.
