Title: SNES Ports on PCE: Has anyone ever tried it? Is it possible?
Post by: MotherGunner on September 26, 2012, 05:43:10 AM
Hi Guys, like the subject line says would this be possible? I know it may be a stupid question but with homebrew becoming more popular in the PCE/TG world it would be great to finally be able to play a game like Jaki Crush on PCE hardware!

I think that mode 7 opening alone would be impossible to emulate on PCE. Better off porting SNES games from scratch than trying to hack and emulate them.

Yea I think I really meant to say "Ports." (Will update Subject Line)

Other than something like Super Mario Kart that relies heavily on mode 7 effects, most anything could be ported to the PCE with varying degrees of accuracy. The gameplay itself could be spot on, but the color depth, parallax scrolling, and stuff like transparencies would need to be toned down and/or done differently (i.e. - dithering, sprites to fake a second scroll layer, sprite animation in place of scaling/rotation, etc.).

There seems to be a rash of questions associated with emulating/porting games over to PCE. While thats cool and all, I really would just rather play those games on the original hardware and have the community working on more great original titles....
I know, its all speculation and just curiousity but still, it always just seems more wishful thinking that real productive concepts. Maybe Im wrong :-k

Sounds like a lot of work. You can't just take SNES graphics and code and throw them onto the PCE. Everything would pretty much have to redone from the bottom up.

The main reason I'd want to port a game to Turbo, was to improve upon it. Ys 5 for instance, I'd like it to look, feel, & sound more like an Ys game. I'd love for someone to take the gfx of arcade Contra, & build the NES version with it on the Turbo. Same goes for Trojan, Strider, & any other NES games that were different from there arcade counterparts. I can't think of anything offhand that I'd like to see just straight up ported though.

The amount of effort it would take isn't worth it, especially since all of the fancy bullshit has to be done differently on the PCE. Jaki Crush has some wonky swirly stuff in certain parts. It's easier to do that crap on the SNES.
Just start over with the same base graphics. Do the effects PCE style, done.!

Look at the SNES port of Dracula X to see how badly that idea turns out. And porting from the SNES to the PCE... we'd have to make sure they don't play too fast.

Id love to see some nes ports to the pce like metal storm :D but snes to pce i can think of a few games that would be cool to see how they would turn out but yeah would rather see older game upgraded with pce ports

As mentioned in an other thread, assault suit valken should have be done on the pce instead on the sfc. it was a born pce game.

The time and effort would be the same as creating something original. Small tech demos are neat, but I'd only port a game from SNES to PCE if it was an important title that was being upgraded to make it superior to the original.

I'm seeing BT's and Lord's ideas and I like them. Like take an original game, make it better and add modifications as needed.
