Good deal on Download! I like Download, and the gratuitous vulgarities used in the "between stages" screens are pretty amusing (even the game over screen says something like, "You can't f*cking give up!"
I picked up TaleSpin a few months ago as well -- I never played it and I was curious to see how it was. Still haven't played it much. It's much better than Darkwing Duck, though. I can tell you that much.

I have been very curious as well, though I need to contact the seller for it (whom I know who has posted here at least once), because I think he might've forgot about the auction.

Ahhh, I bought this a long time ago and it certainly isn't as bad as folks make it out to be. But it certainly isn't anything to get too excited about either.
I liked that it was a challenging (if short) shooter. It's very old-skool (all the sprites / backgrounds / action seem very FLAT ), but it's neat that DODGING is a crucial skill in this game. You can't simply blast everything (at least, I haven't found a way).
I should warn you that I am a masochist and continued to play this game even though it quickly became frustrating and seemed to have lots of "cheap" areas.... but I've often found that skill / memorization can solve many accusations of a game being "cheap", so I don't know if the game is actually cheap or if I simply lack the SKILLZ. I haven't played the game in years.
I do remember this: I liked the JAZZY-ROCK soundtrack. Many folks will dismiss it, but I think it was somewhat refreshing. Some tracks are very commercial-poppy-Jazzy-rock, while other veer closer to generic tunes ("Top Gun" - inspired?).
There is a funny, extremely basic / generic opening cinema -- it doesn't really get you "pumped-up", but the names of the pilots are on their helmets and, IIRC, "BOM KILLER" (or something like that) is one of the pilots' names. Awesome.
Since this game is (or at least it was), very, very cheap ($5-10), I'd say it was definitelly worth getting for fans of the shooter genre. It is playable, it offers a challenge, and offers some novelty value to the masochists out there.
There is a HuCard game that is very similar to this... Power Gate, a game I bought a long time ago and was devastated by its lameness. Now, however, I don't mind how lame it is (it's in the league of F 123 Hawk, perhaps a notch below, I can't remember) , but back in the day I paid a lot for it (early 90's).
I don't recall beating either game, but I know that I must have gotten awfully close because I put a lot of hours into both of these games.
DISCLAIMER: Most folks will denounce both Power Gate and Hawk F 123 as complete and utter trash. My philosophy is to try to enjoy games if they are "playable".

Thanks for the words, Steve, I'm really interested in hearing the JAZZY ROCk soundtrack for it.
And yes, I've played Power Gate on emulation before and later saw screenshots for Hawk-F123 and noticed how incredibly similar they look! Since I couldn't remember the name for Power Gate, I was doing some mad research trying to find it so I could compare it again!

Ebay believe it or not, a guy put it up with a $130 BIN and $20 shipping -- I must've been one of the first to see it: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=001&item=110015103700&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1#ebayphotohosting

Here's what I've got on the way. My buddy in Japan (works for Hudson) occasionally makes runs to the city for games and stuff and is nice enough to pick me up stuff from my WANTED list when he does. Every couple months. Here's what's coming this month:
Avenue 6 Pad Anearth Fantasy Stories (I added this after a recent thread here) Y's IV Art of Fighting (ACD) Panic Bomber Salamander Darius Plus (that's the SuperGrafx HuCard) Granzort (SuperGrafx, CIB) Ghouls 'n Ghosts (SuperGrafx, CIB) Battle Ace (SuperGrafx, CIB)
All games are complete in case with manual & near mint except the SuperGrafx games which are complete with even the original box. After shipping that batch ran me $175. It should show up by mid next week, I'm excited. I've always been a big fan of the CD version of Darius on my Turbo so I'm looking forward to playing the SuperGrafx-enhanced HuCard version.
That's my most expensive batch to date, but it's because of the SuperGrafx games. I tend to buy stuff more in bulk from him every couple months since it's a lot cheaper that way than buying in online stores and eBay.
I still have to resort to eBay for domestic titles, though. :?

Granzort & Battle Ace are brand new, never been played. The whitish markings you can see on Battle Ace are on the shrinkwrap (as are all the stickers), not the box, though it's hard to tell that from the photo. Ghouls 'n Ghosts is used but mint. Art of Fighting is brand new also. The rest are used but excellent to mint condition. Also received but not pictured here is Sidearms Hyperdyne (US version). The pictured lot ran me $175 even, fresh from Japan!
I added Anearth Fantasy Stories to the bunch after a thread here piqued my interest. I've started playing it and I'm trying to avoid using m1savage's walkthrough, though I had to resort to it for help with the battle menu options. Fun game!

SuperGrafx games didn't even come in jewel cases like regular non-super HuCards? Did they hate their SuperGrafx customers? I guess they did. That right there is the reason the system failed to sell more than 100 units... it just had a very cheap feel about it since NEC never really tried.

They do come in jewel cases, but they're just so SUPER, that they also come with a special cardboard sleeve for the jewel case.
Not only that, but the deluxe sleeve out Working Designs Working Designs by utilizing shiny bronze paint technology in places, years before WD had even invented it.

Quite the opposite, as Black_Tiger indicated.
As a matter of fact, it was the Turbo/CoreGrafx customers NEC hated. They loved the SuperGrafx customers so much they provided mega-awesome cardboard sleeves OVER the regular HuCard jewel cases just as a way to say "thanks, you're cool" to SGX players.

Ah. But in your picture it looks like the SuperGrafx cases are thinner than the real PC Engine cases. Look how much thicker the Ys 4 case right above it is. It may just be the way things are positioned, but it gives it the illusion that they are in a weak cardboard case like the games included with the Sega CD model 1. I hope you can get that damn sticker off of the Ys case.
Title: Re: Games that are in the mail
Post by: nat on March 24, 2007, 12:14:54 PM
Oh, yeah, I see what you mean. There must've just been something under the Ys IV case.
That's an old message-- that stuff came in like two months ago. Yeah, I got the sticker off cuz it was on the plastic wrap not the case itself.

Well these aren't "In the mail" since I bought them from stores in Osaka, but here are my newest additions:
Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire (Mint with Spine Card) - a lot of money, but just holding the case feels strangely cool. Plus the game rocks! Hellfire S - Nice game, a little simplistic at times, but the music is beautiful. Devil Crash - wow, now this is a pinball game! Street Fighter II - very nice port. bought this more out of sentimental value (and it was super cheap)

Lords of the Rising Sun BusterBros Splash Lake World Court Tennis Takin' It To The Hoop Vigilante Yo' Bro TV Sports Hockey TV Sports Football Silent Debuggers Power Golf Pac-Land Somer: Assault Hit the Ice Legendary Axe 2 Legendary Axe Ys III: Wanderers from Ys R-Type
I say 'supposed', because I may get ripped off with what I actually recieve. The seller already ripped me with the combined 'shipping' cost, which totals 150% of the combined selling price of the actual items.

I think it's an ok add on for the famicom still it's not perfect.
As turbo D mention the belt drive can go bad then you need to replace it.
Wich is one of the reason why i don't play it as much.
If any thing i have the, FDS as a collection peace heck i play the carts more then the disc.
Also there are "boots of SMB2" that can be found as well on cart for it and there was also the offiical release of, SMB2 for the GBA import only of corse.
FDS was simpley a cheap way for nintendo to get there games to the consumer nothing more.
While in the end... it was replace by carts once it got cheap and they could more with it.
You can read more about it here if you care http://www.atarihq.com/tsr/fds/fds.html

Yeah, LostLevels/SMB2 is on Mario All Stars as well.
Still i've herd fans complain that they change the way it plays on it some how.
Just another reason why i wanted to get it for my FDS.
Btw i got np with, Doki Doki Panic either when it became SMB2 for the U.S.

I'm a fairly big fan of Mario...
Super Mario Bros. 2, the USA version, is by far the best Super Mario game ever made. I've never played it in it's "original" Doki Doki Panic form, but clearly the creators meant for it to be a Mario game from day 1. 8)
The only time I've played the Japanese SMB2 was indeed on the All-Stars. It intruiged me enough that I wanted to get the Famicom version, until I found out it was FDS only.
Actually, there really is something about the way that one and the original SMB play on the All-Stars cart that bothers me. For SMB1, I'll take the original NES version any day.

apart from timer (stops aliens for a while) shield recovery, shield that appears above your head.. I think the rest are various types of lasers, missiles etc

Black_Tiger,
I think I know of where those games were acquired!
From Direct4games, right?
I'm guessing their TG-16 stock isn't moving fast enough, so they discounted them quite a bit.
The shipping is still a bit outrageoes, though when you add it all up, the cost of each game is worth it.
I'm pretty sure that company, direct4games.com, is what became of telegames.co.uk.
Good prices, it made me jump on a few items that I'd like to replace. Not that the specific games I picked up are in poor shape, however my Night Creatures box is a bit sunbleached on it's edge, damage like that justified my spending in that area, haha. Plus, it's always fun to open a still sealed TG-16 game.

I have Far East of Eden Manji Maru that's been sitting in a box for ten years. I never played it. Now I have the sequel!!
Hopefully I can find Engrish walkthrus for both.
I'm most excited to play Blazing Lazers. I may not open the sealed one and just buy a bare card to play.

Also I finally got my precious Arcade Card Pro in the mail yesterday, got it for only $29.99 (since I was stupid enough to include my Arcade Card Duo when I sold my other Duo-r)... Finally I can play Sapphire again :P

Black_Tiger,
Ever receive your 3 missing games? I've ordered from Direct4 about 3 times in the past, though always directly through their web site. I've never had any issues with them. Though, I've never dealt with them through ebay 'til recently.
I actually just had a similar experience with another seller where I purchased 2 games, only 1 arrived. I just e-mailed him to see if it's supposed to be mailed later. I've had this happen with mass purchases every once in a while, whether it be toiletries or Video games. Still, no fun when it happens.
Legend of Xanadu II and Neo Metal Fantasy. I got these for a steal from Hit-Japan with each being $10 plus $9 shipping. I can't wait!
They're two of the very best games for the PC Engine, RPG'ish or otherwise. 8)
Plus I'm pretty sure that excellent english walkthroughs are available for both. :-"

Victory Run Blazing Lazers China Warrior Super Vollyball Takin' It To the Hoop Dragon's Curse
Not much of a fan of sports games but I plan to eventually have the complete US collection. A complete PCE collection is impossible to obtain so I'm not even going to try.

I own it and played it a bit. It is a very good game. Good art, a few nice cut scenes and very playable. It's an old school RPG and kind of reminds me of Phantasy Star II.

Title: Re: Games that are in the mail
Post by: SuperDeadite on May 17, 2007, 01:58:57 AM
Yeah I spent a lot of money the other day but it was certainly worth it.
Sylphia is one awesome shooter, the early backgrounds are a bit bland, but they do get better and the general asthetics are great. The aquaduct and Leaning Tower levels are a total blast. I also adore that dark, almost mournful soundtrack! Only problem is the game is a bit easy, I one-credited it my second try on Normal. Thankfully though there is also a Hard, and Super Hard mode (haven't tried these yet).
Magical Chase is one pretty little game. The colors are so bright! Postioning your "stars" where you want them takes a bit of getting used to, but its not a bad thing. The game feels a bit unbalenced though, most of the game ain't too tough, but that goblin king just utterly destroys me every time. ](*,)
In the end though, these were certainly worth the money, they look quite nice on the shelf next to Sapphire

Scored some stuff off auction
I got lucky I managed to grab briefcase CD add on pretty cheaply (and working or so the seller says).
Anyway I didn't notice when I won the bid but it also came with a few games. That was a nice surprise, however, the camera shot is kind of blurry and I can't make out all the games. I can make out the Far East of Eden game and the system card but eh no idea on the rest.
So any PC-E fan out there with sharp eyes who can tell me what these games are and if their any good
It looks like those pictures were taken with a cell phone.

Nice package deal. I'm trying to find another CD ROM to replace my broken one. Hopefully everything works well. I ended up buying a briefcase+CD combo with a broken CDROM drive recently. That sucked. :(
Anyway, I think I can make out the games (left to right; top to bottom):
1. Formation Soccer 95 della serie A 2. Gotzendiener 3. Shin Megami Tensei 4. Magical Dinosaur Tour 5. Dungeon Master Theron's Quest 6. Kabuki Den 7. System Card 3.0 8. Daisenpu 9. Tengai Makyou Ziria (back of the case I believe) 10. Might and Magic 11. Sherlock Holmes 1
Hope that helps!

On the way right now:
Sinistron (TG-16)
I used to have this game back in the day. It was a casualty of my video game collection sale of 2003.

I've got Blazing Lazers and Bomberman coming (thanks TD!!), and I bought a TG16 controller extension cable for too much, but I've also got some cool non-TG16 stuff on the way...
- NeoGeo Color Pocket with Samouri Showdown and Metal Slug I & II - at least I think it was Samouri Showdown... Maybe it's Last Blade... anyway, this is coming from Japan - it was very reasonably priced, but it's coming very slowly ;)
- BRAND NEW (not MINT, but NEW, truly NEW, NEVER TOUCHED BY HUMAN HANDS NEW) first edition Atari Lynx in the large grey box combo pack (with AC Adapter, Comlynx cable and California Games)... I've picked up a lot of Lynx stuff on Ebay lately, but the thing I wanted most was a real, Made In Japan, first edition Lynx I - finding a brand new one was awesome... Where the f*ck did you get DE2 for $5?
Or did you get the Japanese version?
When I first got DE2 I was blown away by the red book arrangements of the classic DE songs. Here, a few years later, the novelty has worn off and I actually prefer the classic DE chip tunes over their redbook counterparts. Not that the red book versions are bad.

Yep, it's the Japanese version. No spine, I guess that's why it was so cheap. Kinda odd though, because it was that guy with the pink stuff (dream stars japan) that was selling it, his prices are usually very high. I always prefer chip music.

There's a TON of great shit on here. I got it in the bargain bin at Walmart like three years ago for $9.99 or something. Let me tell you, that's a steal of a deal for all the classics on it.
Marble Madness and Gauntlet alone justify the $9.99 price tag, not to mention Defender, KLAX, Vindicators, Paperboy... The list goes on.
In the mail:
Beyond Shadowgate should show up any day now. Terra Cresta II on the way from the UK. It seems the price for this one has really come down since five or so years ago. I won it for around $70, I recall it used to go for $200.
Later this week I need to meet up with Aaron and pick up my brand new, sealed copies of Bravoman and that one Champion Boxing game or whatever it's called.

The two MVS carts were shipped to me from Hong Kong. Good price on both titles together. The seller wrapped the cardboard box with paper. This packages seemed to take longer than normal. When it arrived yesterday, the box seemed to have a large dent... unusual. Upon opening the paper (paper was covered in clear packaging tape) I noticed the dent was a ripped portion of the box, than had been approximately placed back on it's original spot. There was also an envelope inside that featured the USPS symbol! The note, inside the envelope, read that my package had been found ripped open and "rifled". And that some contents may be missing. The general attitude in the letter was "We found your box like this, stuff may be missing, oh well, here's your stuff, you can call me here."
Everything was there. It appears someone ripped the paper off, slit the top of the cardboard box, then ripped a chunk of cardboard down the side of the box. Seems to me, that the package was ripped open in the US, not overseas. Though the letter may say otherwise, it also appears the USPS postal inspectors probably did the rifling.
Interesting stuff, never had USPS insert a note into a package of mine!

Wow, I've never seen a USPS note either. I suspect you're right: I bet the USPS inspected the package. They could have done it more tenderly, goddammmmit.

The only thing similar to this that I have encountered, was when a piece of mail arrived to me, in a USPS plastic bag, with a note reading the mail in the bag had been "damaged in a sorting machine, sorry". It was nothign important, and 3/4 of the letter was still there.
I snapped a few pics of the box, below is a scan of the letter.
This letter has one date WAY off. It reads that they were informed about this item on June 30th. Not possible, as I only paid for these items July 18th.

I received a note from the Post Office when they shredded a money order I was sending to someone. They gave me back a teeny-tiny corner of the money order... the rest was unsalvageable. Fortunately I was able to get my cash back on the M.O. I will never send money orders through the mail again. They shred stuff! Pay your bills online if you can, as checks can get shredded as well and then your mortgage company or water plant or whoever will penalize you for non-payment!

Jeez, how does the post office come about shredding envelopes?

It can sometimes get caught in the sorting machines. I once had a letter delivered by the USPS in a little plastic bag. It was completely filthy (solid black) and had a little note that explained that it had been stuck in the sorter for months and sorry for the inconvenience. Strangely enough, the machine didn't tear it open or even crumple it up; it just coated it in a thick layer of grime. Lucky for me it was just junk mail.

Eternal City, Klax, Dynastic Hero and Blood Gear are on their way from Japan. Not sure if Blood Gear is any good, but it adds to my collection

Those are all pretty good games, Ravij. Eternal City is a decent, though stiff untalked about Metroid-ish game, Klax is a puzzle classic, Dynastic Hero is a fun and colorful side scrolling adventure, and Blood Gear is amazing.

What do you think of Terra Cresta II? How much did you pay for it?
I own it also, but it doesn't get much mention round these parts.

I just got the hu card + slipcase, i paid $45.00 for it, the price range for a complete copy seems to be between $80.00 and $130.00.
The graphics are pretty good, the sound though is very low quality, as for the gameplay the ship just moves to slow, playing the game for the first time and not knowing the enemy patterns its very hard not to get hit by the smallest to the largest enemy ships.

You know that SELECT changes the speed of your ship, right? Just like in the Gunhed/Soldier series. On the fastest setting, your ship is anything but "slow."
The gameplay in Terra Cresta II is very dynamic and changes based on how many "F" powerup gels you have, which vessel add-ons you have and how you've set up your ship formation. Experiment with these things and the "I" button to see what I mean.
It's funny what you say about the sound, or more specifically, the music. At first it has a very abrasive quality to it. To me it sounds like what you would get if you mixed the Genesis sound chip with the NES sound chip. Play more into it and you'll see what I mean. After a couple plays the music really grew on me, and I really like the tunes now.
The game used to sell for around $200, "back in the day." I bought a new copy within the past year for $70 U.S. (it was from an eBay seller in the UK, go figure).

Thanks for telling me about the speed option, that should definitely make things better, the whole vessel add-on thing does make it unique, $70.00 for a new one eh, I've been looking online for 2 or 3 years and i haven't seen a used, complete copy go for less than $80.00, good job on finding that.

I was pretty shocked, yeah.
Until it actually arrived in the mail, I had myself convinced I'd been the victim of some kind of scam.
You can find cheap copies in Japan, though, so maybe that's where the seller originally got it from. I think Tatsujin said he got his for like $40 or something.
