Title: Octurbofest 2013
Post by: chany60126 on August 06, 2013, 04:51:38 PM
The Video Game Summit was a blast. It was nice seeing familiar faces as well as new ones. But why wait until MGC for another turbo gathering??

That's right, Turbo Fest is back, but this time with thrills and chills! Behold: Octurbofest!! Back for its second straight year, we will be rocking it out at the best and largest arcade in the Midwest, Galloping Ghost Arcade.

Admission to Octurbofest is $5. Upon entering the establishment, ask for Turbo Fest, and they’ll point you in the right direction.  If you want access to the arcade it’s an additional $15, but all the machines are set to free play and you can stay as long as you want. The event will take place on October 19th. The address of the arcade is 9415 Ogden Avenue in Brookfield, IL which is only a few miles away from Chicago. The show will start at 12 PM and end at 7 PM.

Come experience some of the best games on CD and hu card, including the Super Grafx and many more. And of course, no Turbo Fest is complete without the fun 5-player Battle Lode Runner and Bomberman 94 matches. Plenty of turbo/pce systems will be available for play.

Here is a video from last year's show which featured an epic 20 player Sonic Spike tourney:

Come join us for an obey filled day of fun.

Let’s keep the good times rolling!

Fingers crossed - if the schedule holds up I should be there, at least for Saturday.

If anyone's on the fence - this is a really fun time without all of the distractions of MGC (or even VGS for that matter). Think we had 6 or so TVs set up with Turbo/PCE, Neo-Geo, Sharp x68000 and others running all day last year.

It's never too far for Turbo n' Friends. Now if I can only convince Necro and Esteban to see the truth.

I had a dream about being at Galloping Ghost last night. Hopefully that is a good sign.

Where is a good nearby hotel? Need to start making reservation. I will be show casing the component video boards and a few of my modded systems, fully consolized turbo expresses and a component video modded turbo/pce duo.

On previous occasions, most of the "out of towners" have stayed at one particular hotel. I'm not sure if that will be the case this time.

I've typically stayed at the red roof in downers grove....  but some people had a bad experience there so I cant say I fully recommend it.  Others have stayed at a hampton inn closer to the arcade... but apparently some people had an interesting experience there as well.

If you're feeling like a baller,  there is an Embassy Suites in Lombard/Downers Grove that should have cheaper rates being that this is a weekend gig.  I think maybe $120 a night?  You get a baller breakfast with that, and free drinks at night.

I haven't booked a room anywhere but plan on arriving the day before and leaving the day after, so if anyone wants to chime in on where they are staying, I'll book there as well (as long as it's reasonably affordable). :)

I'm thinking about booking at Hampton inn then. I'm also plan on arriving that Friday and leaving on Sunday.

I'm checking hotels.com and see that holiday inn is only $128 for two nights and its only 10 mins away for Gallopong Ghost Arcade. I'm thinking about booking it unless other pcefxer are already staying at another hotel. In that case, let me know, I would like to stay where other pcefxer are staying.

The Fairfield Inn / Comfort Inn area that we stay in (in Lombard) for VGS every year is decently close to GG (and cheap) - i think it's like 15-20 mins away and there's some restaurants and whatnot close by (though selection is very limited).

There's a dirtbag diner across from GG that we ate at - think I got like 2 full racks of "the best ribs in town" for like 10 bucks.

Oh well, time to start saving to see if I can make a meet up anywhere.

Imagine Best Buy or Circuit City, but instead it's the size of a Home Depot and has the motherload of electronics circuitry and equipment and insane clearance stuff. It's amazing. Nectarsis and I made a pit stop there after Octurbofest last year.

Worth the drive.  Its like Best Buy, Game Stop, Radio Shack, NewEgg.com/Tiger Direct all rolled into one, the size of a Lowes or Home Depot.  The one near me has a cafe in the center of it.

Very slight possible hiccup for me.  Got a jury duty summons for Oct 7th... as long as it doesnt go the full two weeks they're legally able to require me to serve, then I shouldnt have a problem.  If it does, I might miss the Friday fun.

I'm bringing the x68000 + Monitor. I'll try to bring along a CRT as well if I can scoop up a Goodwill set.

Like Beemer - if I do bring a CRT it ain't coming home with me. Anybody need one?

Well, I'm finally settled into my room at the red roof.  If anyone else is staying here and wants to get together for a beer and obey, shoot me a pm.  The internet here is nonexistant (i'll talk to them about that in the morning) so I'm currently using my cell phone, which sucks.

Can't wait to see y'all again tomorrow!

I don't think I'll ever see another person choose Candy Crush over Ikari Warriors.

Ikari Warriors, those slothful bastards, would get my vote.

I had a blast, totally worth the drive for me. It was good to meet everyone, rolfmao, chany, dragonmasterdan dan, chop and the rest of the obey gang. Thanks blue for introducing me to the x68000 and for being my chauffeur.

I didn't take that many pictures.

Good to meet some new faces from the boards and good times had by all.

I love how generous our group is with helping each other out - thanks to Beemer for finally helping me complete the x68000 setup and Chop for always helping everyone out with repairs.

Glad to see everyone had a good time.

Hopefully though MGC will be doable for me. (and the duo door replacement)

New to this forum. Just wanted to jump in and say what a cool event this was.

I've been a long time fan of anything to do with these consoles, though I've had more of an isolated existence in that respect and have never been much of a participant online or elsewhere.   So it was by chance that I got wind through Facebook this was going on.  Galloping Ghost being an awesome place anyway and not too far at all from where I live, I decided to stop in and take a look.

Couldn't stick around for too long, but it seemed like a really cool group of people there.  And of course the systems and games you guys brought out for the event were awesome.

Funny, it appears that my presence was captured in a couple of the above pictures posted in this thread.  That's me in the blue/yellow sweater, blue hat.

Being a total stranger joining in on some Battle Lode Runner with a group of people who obviously knew each other rather well, and with me not really saying too much to anyone, I would say my talent for making things as awkward as humanly possible was in top form on that day.

Anyway, you guys put together a really cool event. I regret I couldn't hang around for more of it.

These guys are the coolest bunch around and we take in anyone that loves the Turbo/PCE/retro games in general and their families. Hope to see you there next year. :)
