What are your top 5 shoot 'em up games for the TG-16/PC Engine?
Mine are:
1. Winds/Lords of Thunder
2. Soldier Blade
3. Hana Taka Daka!
4. Spriggan
5. Magical Chase
-
Having not played a significant number of great shooters on the NEC powerhouse, I'm not nearly qualified to answer as best I could, however, I'll answer based on what I own.
Also, top 5 is not nearly enough :P
R-Type >The game that got me to buy the system, legendary shooter which I swooned over in the arcade.
Blazing Lazers > Still one of my favorite shooters of all time. It just that good to me.
Lords of Thunder > Truthfully a tie between LoT and GoT as they are both epic, However LoT gets a bump for the totally bad ass and unique premise/design.
Gate of Thunder > Just awesome, could probably have used a smidge more variety in levels but holy hell, what a masterfully crafted game.
Spriggan > My love for Compile burns bright and Spriggan is Blazing Lazers (god why couldn't they just call it Gunhed) turned up to "11." So happy I finally have this in my library.
My continued list.
Download > Really, really awesome game which I just got recently and am enjoying quite a lot. Hard as nails but oh so cool.
Spriggan Mk. 2 > Very different from Spriggan but wow what a game. For a shooter the production values are fantastic.
Nexzr> I think this game, if I can ever pass the 2nd stage will go higher on my list, but as it stands its kicking my ass. And I'm enjoying it ](*,)
Sapphire> A masterpiece and glimpse of what the PC Engine/AC could do. It is a shame more could not be accomplished on this config. of hardware.
-
My top 5 will not be totally conclusive as I've not played all SHMUPs but here goes:
Lords of Thunder
Spriggan
Super Star Soldier (Edges out Soldier Blade on nostalgia)
PC Denjin
Cotton.
-
no particular order...
GoT
Sapphire
Blazing Lazers
Air Zonk
Atlantean
-
Download 2
Final Soldier (the best Soldier, yeah, I went there)
R-TYPE Ccomplete CD
Rayxanber 2
Gradius 2
-
Blazing Lazers
Nexzr
Sapphire
Gradius II
Gate of Thunder
Honorable Mentions: W-Ring, Gradius, R-Type, Spriggan, Down Load, Super Darius 2, Alzadick, and more.
-
ALL OF THEM!
(well, save for Armed F and Ordyne...I did not care for those)
-
I can't comment on PC Engine games because I haven't played any, but my top five shoot 'em ups in no particular order are:
Blazing Lazers
Super Star Soldier
Dragon Spirit
Gate of Thunder
Sinistron
-
Tough call
No Order
Gate/Lords Of Thunder (counting as one so I can get an extra)
Spriggan MkII (yeah yeah one is better, screw you)
Blazing Lazers/Gunhed
R-Type (complete)
Ai Cho Aniki yep it's "fruity" but it's also a solid experience graphically and musically
-
No love for Coryoon here?
I'd have to go with:
Lords of Thunder
R-Type
Coryoon
Cho Aniki
Cotton
-
1. Drac X... j/k...Soldier Blade
2. Blazing Lazers
3. Sapphire
4. Air Zonk
5. R-Type Complete
Shout outs to: Sinistron (which I just got and like a lot) and Cotton
-
This is not easy to do with all the awesome shooters that are on the system. I feel it should be broken into hucard and cd games, however I will not do that.
1. Gate of Thunder
2. Spriggan
3. Soldier Blade
4. Blazing Lazers/Gunhed
5. R-Type US Version
Man that was not easy and I'm sure I am going to want to change it later. This selection isn't a personal preference selection, but is based off of gameplay, format, and year released. I love Lords of Thunder more than some of these shooters on the list. However the ones on my list play better, or were awesome for being shoved on a hucard.
EDIT: I'm a dipshit and finally realized it's "your" top 5. I was thinking THE top 5.
So, new list would be:
1. Gate of Thunder
2. Spriggan
3. Soldier Blade
4. Lords of Thunder
5. Nexzr
-
Winds of Thunder
Soldier Blade
Gunhed
Seirei Senshi Spriggan
Slyphia
Okay so it's a little biased, I'll brush up eventually and (maybe) put out a more varied list later.

Slyphia

Why is it biased? :D
Is it because you picked 3 Compile games?
-
WoT
Air Zonk
R-Type
SideArms
Mr. Heli
-
I can't pick only 5; I suck at narrowing things down.
-
Soldier Blade
Winds of Thunder
PC Denjin/Air zonk
super star soldier
nezxr
-
The shooters, they effeah me, they effah me real bad, but I enjoy playing them, so I guess its like enjoying an abusive relationship.
1.) Air Zonk
2.) Cotton
3.) Magical Chase
4.) Dead Moon (don't judge :(
5.) hmm I wanna say Aero Blasters but that game makes me so effffing mad, so instead a not that great game Cyber-Core!!!! (better than sinistron (spelling?) at least
also wanna metion that I like Paranoia/Psychosis, not in the fivessss but its okay-ish I guess, at least so far what I've played, will need to give it more time soon-ish, but its kinda gonna wait in line behind Ys and Samurai Ghost for a min. :)
-
ALL OF THEM!
(well, save for Armed F and Ordyne...I did not care for those)
All of them, including Deep Blue & Legion!?! :D
For me:
Spriggan
Lords of Thunder
Gate of Thunder
Air Zonk
Star Parodia
It's hard to pick just 5, I'd also go with Blazing Lazers, & all Star Soldiers, Aeroblasters, etc. etc. etc.
-
What's so wrong with Armed Formation F? It's a fun game!
-
Probably:
Super Darius
Sidearms Special
Aeroblasters
Lords of Thunder
Gate of Thunder
-
1.) Soldier Blade
2.) Nexzr
3.) Lords of Thunder
4.) Rayxanber 2
5.) Gate of Thunder
Gosh, Image Fight 2 is so close to these also, I could make an argument for all 6 they are the best on the system.
-

Word. I almost added Rayxanber II. I love/hate that game so much. For a regular CD-Rom2 game it is definitely up there as some of the best on the system.
-
No order:
Gate of Thunder
Toilet Kids
W-Ring
Air Zonk
Sapphire (too good...too hard)
-
No particular horder:
- Air Zonk
- Gates of Thunder
- Lords of Thunder
- Final Soldier
- J.B Harold's Murder Club (sweet fast-paced action)
Peace!
-
J.B. Harold is one of the best shmups I've ever played.
-
J.B. Harold is one of the best shmups I've ever played.
Then you haven't played It Came From the Desert yet.
-
In no particular order:
Gate of Thunder
Soldier Blade
Air Zonk
Blazing Lazers
Aero Blasters
-
From those that I own:
1. Gradius II
2. Star Parodier
3. Salamander
4. Gate of Thunder
5. Winds of Thunder
Honorable mentions: Gradius, Air Zonk, Blazing Lazers
-
Lords of Thunder
Blazing Lazers
Air Zonk
Spriggan
Sapphire
Runner Up
Download 2
-
Shoot-em-up stages from Beavoman and Yo Bro and Final Zone II get DIShonorable mention
-
No way I can put any game I own into any sort of list. I probably could have back before I became older and arguable wiser.
Spriggan
Gate of Thunder
Blazing Lazers
Nexzr (still can't get anywhere close to beating it)
Air Zonk
This list could very well change tomorrow. Point is I love most all shooties on NEC's little Engine.
-
Gate of Thunder
Spriggan
Lords of Thunder
Soldier Blade
Blazing Lazers
Honorable mention to: R-Type, Gradius II, Aldynes, Nexzr, Sapphire, Air Zonk and many more
-
Really tough question to answer. So many great ones.
No particular order:
-Gate of Thunder
-Salamander
-Winds of Thunder
-Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire
-Blazing Lazers
ALL OF THEM!
(well, save for Armed F and Ordyne...I did not care for those)
All of them, including Deep Blue & Legion!?! :D
I like Legion. Not on my top 5 but I enjoyed it after giving it some play time.
-
I like the one that goes pew pew
Actually I first need to play more then five shooter on the system before I can comment
But I do have and payed gates of thunder, sprigen 1 & 2, as well as blazing lasers and these are all fine shooters.
-

I like how you managed to botch the spelling of each of those games. :D
Making a top 5 for shmups is impossible.
Kyukyoku Tiger isn't getting enough love here. Probably because there are soooo many outstanding shmups, but it's a classic!
If I was stuck on a desert island Spriggan and Star Parodier would be with me. The others would rotate, but would be pretty much what's already been said. :)

It's a gift really
I guess shooters are to the TG-16 as fighting games are to the Neo Geo
-

Only around a 1/3 of Neo Geo games are fighters.
-

I'm just giving you a hard time. :P Welcome!

Blazing Lazers
Super Star Soldier
Final Soldier

All good
I can see it is a salty group here. But clearly there is alot of inside jokes that must have progressed for years. So newbies like me are playing catch up.
I think the only non boys group good natured joking I have gotten was over the whole sealed game thing. I guess it is a sore topic for some.
Less not speak of how many toy collectors only buy sealed figures lol.
-
Toys are meant to be played with. Personally, I don't care if it's Transformers or Tubografx-16. A sealed game is a thing dying to be played with. So we don't see eye-to-eye on that. Whatever. As long as you're here to enjoy the library these consoles have to offer, then good on ya. I just hope you don't turn out to be a collector interested only in the value of these games. [-(
-
I want to participate in this thread, but I can't. Like others have said, there are too many good shmups to pick just 5!
with so many to choose from, a better thread may be "top 5 shmups that nobody else has heard of".
Try five Hu and five super cd
Or top five us and five import only...
-

No worries there I couldn't care less about price or worth of anything I collect as I have no plans on selling.
The only time price is an issue is when it is something I want to try and the price feels or is unattainable.
But at times it makes you feel good when you get that deal or find said item in the wild and am able to finally added and play ....because of the expense of it.....
Rarity is one thing but hyped up price is another......especially when said item average norm was in the 20-45 dollar range not to long ago...
Cookers adventure
Earthbound
Chroni trigger
Etc
Etc
-
In no particular order:
Super Raiden
R-Type
Sinistron
...and all the first party Hadasan shooters.
-
There are still a ton of other shmups i still need to play for the turbo, but for the ones i have played, heres my list of favs,
Spriggan
Lords of thunder
Air Zonk
Star Parodier
Final solider
-
The five I seem to play the most, in no particular order of quality, are:
Soldier Blade
Blazing Lazers
Sidearms
Aero Blasters
Fantasy Zone
-
In no particular order and based more on nostalgia than anything:
Gate of Thunder
Lords of Thunder
Air Zonk
Soldier Blade
Dead Moon
And special honors to Steam Hearts for the odd story.
-
Steam Hearts, ha!
-
The five I seem to play the most, in no particular order of quality, are:
Soldier Blade
Blazing Lazers
Sidearms
Aero Blasters
Fantasy Zone
I wonder why Airzonk 2 never gets as much love.....
I guess (based on game play) the first game is the best game.
-

There are fewer folks who have the game....
....but, even accounting for this disparity, it doesn't WOW! folks like the HuCARD.
I myself have spent far more time with Huey, but I intend to give the CD another chance (it's been years).

I actually haven't had the opportunity to play Airzonk 2 yet (I still need to research how to properly burn TGCDs) but I am definitely looking forward to it, even though most seem to prefer the first
-
Super Air Zonk is barely even worth a cdr. If you're going to spend that kind of money on a game, go for the JP version. I would put the money towards something like Sapphire or Nexzr.
-
This thread has been most helpful with me trying to piece together which games to pick up first. I also just found out about the PC Engine Bible: http://www.pcengine.co.uk/ which is bloody fantastic! Thanks for all the great shooter suggestions!
-
US HuCards:
R-Type
Raiden
Blazing Lasers
Side Arms
Air Zonk
[I have heard good things about the Soldier games, but I do not own any (yet).]
[[Extra: I have always wondered about the legendary port of Truxton for the PC Engine]]
-

Oh trust me; I have no desire to spend 800-1000 for a damn shoot'em up. Although, I'm still interested in checking out Airzonk 2. Sapphire is definitely high on my want list, but sadly the prices on that bad boy seem only to be going up too. Definitely going to CDR both sometime hopefully soon.
-
Lords of thunder
Gate of thunder
Spriggan
Override
Blazing Lasers.
-
salamander
parodius
Gradius 2
Fantasy zone
blazing lasers
when i first burned CD's i learned the hard way. i think you can figure it out in the long run. its really not worth it. its like burning dreamcast cd's. its a hit or miss even if you do everything right.

The list will change (I'm sure) as I explore the library thanks to the Everdrive.

Please do! I am crazy enough to even own the arcade board, which cost me and took two years to track down. Very much worth the expense, though, and it is still a sight on a 25 inch arcade CRT.

You have the arcade board? Nice!
Can we see some pics? Maybe some video of it in action?
-
Sure, some pictures in a new thread, maybe? I don't want to derail this one, that would not be a good thing for a brand new member (me!) to do. Be careful though; arcade collecting can, much like tg16/pce collecting, become very addictive, rewarding, and expensive!

The PC Engine version is closer to the arcade than the MD version. It's also supposed to have anywhere from better to great music, but I'm not crazy about it. You can read a detailed review here:

It took you two years to track down a Tatsujin PCB? You must be talking about the US Truxton version.

Okay, I'll get my cab back in order this weekend and I'll snap a few pictures :)
Oh, and yes, it is the US Williams distributed Truxton PCB. It only took me so long to find a price I was willing to pay because I am a typical arcade collecting cheapskate (we all are).
Back to the regularly scheduled thread....I don't want to summon the ire of the thread maker!
-
Oh, ok. Awesome. I have the Tatsujin pcb and it was fairly cheap. I figured it was the US Truxton you were talking about. What cab are you using? *drails thread even more*
-
Well, I guess this is helping my post count so I can participate in the Deep Blue raffle....
It is a conversion cab, formerly Leland's Quarterback, that was extra popular with arcade operators to make into Raiden II. From the shell I found, I improved it, but it still needs work (mainly I need to cut a new control panel plexi).
Back to the thread (I hope!)....

Here's a list of my Top 5 favorite shooters ..
1. Lords Of Thunder

1. LoT
2. Star Parodia
3. GoT
4. Air Zonk
5. Raiden
Honorable Mention: Sapphire
ProTip: I've hardly had any experience owning/playing Nexzr, Raisinbar or Spriggan.. If I did, They'd probably be on my list too....

I always agonize too much over "Top X" lists, because I don't always have clear feelings about games. I mean, as far as like / don't like, sure, but I'm overly analytical about the stuff I really love. So here's my attempt at this top 5 list.
In no particular order:
[ul][li]Blazing Lazers[/li][li]Aeroblasters[/li][li]Gate of Thunder[/li][li]Nexzr[/li][li]Star Parodier[/li][/ul]Probably easy to figure out my shooter tastes from this list, I bet.
-
I haven't played many shmups, but I know my absolute favorite is Air Zonk. It has it all. Blaxing Lazers is a great one too, but it is a bit long for my tastes.
-
Blazing Lazers
Sylphia
Lords of Thunder
Air Zonk
Sapphire

Wow nice! Must be great to revel in all the NEC. Now that I know about it, maybe next year I can make the trip :) Have always wanted to spend more time in Bear town.
As for Tatsujin, I wish my old man reflexes could handle any sort of competition. #-o

(That's the thread for last year. I don't believe that there's a thread for this year yet.)
As for Tatsujin, if your reflexes can at least get you to the end of level 1, then you're in the running for 1st place.

I'm the only person who voted for Hana Taka Daka.
It's an awesome game, I don't understand why it gets no love.
It's always been popular around here, but this is a personal "top 5" list for a library with over 100 plane games.

4. Air Zonk/PC Denjin
5. Sapphire
