Irem was once such a good company. Shame what they have turned into. Their pinnacle was definitely on the pc engine.
What was your favorite Irem game?
Mine is Mr. Heli. It was one of the first pce games I beat, and I love it's quirkyness and amazing sprite work. Runner ups for me are Tonma and ninja spirit.
-
Rtype. duh
Also love Kickle, Metal Storm, X Multiply, Ninja Spirit and just about everything else from Irem
-
On the PCE, Ninja Spirit. Overall, Metal Storm.
-
Haven't played R-Type on PCE yet. Know it's on NES but Metal Storm is my favorite as well.
-
Tough decision between R Type and Ninja Spirit. Voted for Ninja Spirit because I'm able to beat it unlike R Type.
I've been playing In the Hunt, which is a pretty fun game. Irem made a lot of great games.
-
R-Type is the most well known IREM game, and the game that made people buy the PCE, but I'm voting Mr Heli. Just a cute and playable game, and well executed on the PCE hardware.
-
Voted Image Fight II, because the fact it even exists is amazing.
-
Ninja Spirit for me, though Gekisha Boy is also damn good. Sol Moonarge (not Moonrage) also looks pretty awesome and I have a soft spot for RPGs, but I've not put enough time into it to give it the thumbs up.
-
My favorite Irem game for the PCE would be R-type Complete. As for them as a company, I really like Dragon Breed. I wish that game would of been ported. But as for my favorite piece of Irem hardware, I love my Madonna cabinet. I should put a Vigilante PCB in there, as you are saving 'Madonna' in the game.

man get undercover cops in that cab stat!
that's one sexy cab :D
-
Since R-Type doesn't count as it is the default favorite due to nostalgia alone, Sol Moonarge is my favorite Irem game, PCE or otherwise, and stands far above most of Irem's library for me, as a big RPG fan.
-
With what's up there, I'm also going to have to go with Image Fight II.
-
Kickle cubicle was the first item game I played. And i loved it.
-
dame hard to choose i love all them games r-type springs strait to mind but i am going to be diffrent and say Legend of hero tonma love that game
-
R-type, followed closely by Ninja Spirit. Honorable mention: Vigilante.
-
R-Type, for me, defines IREM at the time period of the PCE. It was, and still is, awesome. If R-Type was banned from the vote for being too awesome then it would have to be Image Fight.
-
I voted to Tonma, which I think is under-talked about and underrated.
If it was all Irem games, then Spelunker would take the cake.
-
Ninja Spirit. I didn't even have to think about it. It's such a great game. I never tire of playing though it.
Many of the others deserve honorable mentions, though:
R-Type was the reason I bought a TG16 bitd.
And I love Mr. Heli. It's a shame that one never made it to the States.
Image Fight is really good too.
-
I like most of them very much, but I can't help but give my vote to Gekisha Boy!
-
I'd day Sol Moonarge, for the hours spent trying to go a little further, the frustration of never having been able to clear it, and because it's a old dream to have it translated.
-
What? no "other" option?
My favorite Irem game is Kickle Cubicle. Really messes up your brain. One of those "frustratingly addictive" games. And the ending feels rewarding.
-
What? no "other" option?
We're in the PCE sub-forum, so it's presumably PCE games only.
-
What about Eiyuu Sankokushi ;-) I suppose this may not count as it is a Simulation that requires an understanding of the Japanese language.
Back in the day vote: R-Type then Gekisha boy as it was a genre that I had not seen before.
Todays vote: Ninja spirit & Image fight
I need to take a look at Sol moonrage, as this is a game I have never owned!
-
Ninja Spirit, hey it's a really good conversion of the arcade original. My runner up would be legend of hero tonma of course.
-
Ninja Spirit
Gekisha Boy
Legend of Hero Tonma
Image Fight
-
As much fun as Ninja Spirit is I have to go with Gekisha Boy.
-
R Type is far and away my favorite Irem game.
-
R-Type
-
Ninja Spirit is the one I have the most fun playing, and that's what counts for the most in my opinion. I also like the soundtrack the best.
-
How's Image Fight II? Still playable today? (Are the production values close to the Soldier games, for instance?)
-
Production values are high, sure, though I'd still call Super Star Soldier the better game.

I agree with o.pwuaioc, SSS is superior game: more accessible, more variety, more "freedom" to approach game using a wide variety of techniques. SSS is easy, at least for me, except for a few moments of stress. I may be jaded because I played the heck out of this game.
Image Fight II is a challenging game that is more about "surviving"...you are not going to worry about your score, or trying to destroy every single enemy on the screen, because you are solely concentrated on devising a feasible strategy for getting through the stage.
It's a good game, especially if you are a shootemup fan, but casual gamers may find it intimidating (R-Type ramps up difficulty, too, and probably scares off casual gamers).
-
IF I have to choose only one, it sure be R-Type!
-

Not a surprise! Where have you been?

no one likes racing damashi :(

It's not a "like" poll.
-
no one likes racing damashi :(
Consequently, no one likes Vigilante.
I like it, but not my favorite.

I used to think Vigilante was mediocre, but now I really find it charming.
However, it just isn't good enough to break into the "best of" list.
-
Every time I see this list, I think "OMG, Irem sure didn't know how to make crappy games" ! Every game in this list is so awesome, including Racing Damashi and Vigilante, which I find very beautiful.

Of their stuff from that era, some of their NES/FC games are kind of mediocre... Parman looks great, but the games are very easy and insubstantial. But yeah, their TG16 games are all quality titles, no question.

A bunch of Irem's games on the SNES were pretty crap or mediocre. Even Super R-type has problems.
Most of their games on the PCE were excellent.
-
It was a tough pick between R-Type and Ninja Spirit.... this was mainly because Shinobi wasnt on the list!

Why would it be?

I voted for Ninja Spirit. My least favorite is of course Vigilante.
If anyone imports Japanese GB games, check out this cool little game I recently discovered:
