Hello,
A few of us were thinking of having a NEC Gathering next June in Wisconsin. Well I emailed Dan Loosen about making our 'Turbo Fest' a part of the Midwest Gaming Classic, somewhat simular to DreamCon and JaggFest.
Heres the email I got back from Dan~
Actually, the MGC is already quite a bit on my mind, and a Turbo Fest
gathering would be a great idea! Tell me more thoughts about your
ideas, and we can brainstorm it up to make it really cool :) Prices
next year for vending will go up slightly, although I don't have final
numbers just yet. Expect about a 10-15% increase though, as we need to
recover our table costs better this year.
The only Problem I have is figuring out what to call the TurboDuo Gathering!
LOL
Do you guys have any suggestions?
TurboSage
-
How about Turbografest-16?
-
I say it should be called "TurboGraDuoEngineFest".
-
Cool idea!!!
-
I think it should be called TurboFest HE, TurbFest, TurboLife, TurboWorld, or Turbo Gaming 2007. Any chance of having it in the east coast. I live in New Jersey. :)
-
Pcenginefestx
-
I like some of those ideas guys! Thanks. Heres kind of what its come down to-
a.PcEngineFestX
b.TurboLife
c.TurboWorld
d.TurboFest
e.NEC Gathering(because the PCFX will be represented as well)
f.Turbo Fest HE
g.Turbo Bash
h.Turbo Gala
i. other?
TurboSage
PS: keep the ideas coming, we got till next June! :)
-
How about DuoPalooza :)
OD
-
It would be funny if you name it TurboEngine Fest or TurboEngineFX Convention, or whatever, and these car buffs come in and say, "Hey, what are all these losers doing here? Isn't this suposed to be a convention about Turbo Engines?"
-
Pit Stop .
That's my idea.
Both names of these systems both have racing terms in them:
Turbo
Engine
-
I like DuoPalooza, or how about TurboPalooza!
Hmmm, thats cool!
TurboSage
-
DuoPalooza definately works. :)
-
I'm so f*cking there. If you need any help from me, please let me know.
-
I am of course interested. Keep us updated here turbo_sage.
-
DuoCon? TurboCon? NECFEST (pronounced Neck Fest)
-
How about" PCE Fanatics" afther all were all crazy about the system right ?
-
Japanese for Fanatic is Otaku.
How about PCE Otaku Fest or something?
I like PCE Fanatics!
TurboSage
-
The wapanese use "otaku" to describe themselves, however most don't realize that otaku in Japan means you are very mentally unstable obsessive freak. Otaku in Japan are looked down upon and ridiculed.
-
Regardless of what we call it.
We should all wear Black T-shirts with our PCEngineFX names on it.
And take a big group photo. I want to meet everyone!
-

Keeping that theme in mind, how about "The Turbo-Mentally Unstable Obsessive Freak-apalooza"? :)
OD

Keeping that theme in mind, how about "The Turbo-Mentally Unstable Obsessive Freak-apalooza"? :)
Hmm... That could work, that could work. :) Hmm, how about ... "Turbo Grafx Fest 2007?"
-
Turbo Grafx Fest 2007?
It pretty much covers everything. I like it!
Who's for it?
TurboGrafxFest 2007.
TGF'07 :)
TurboSage
-
It sounds good to me.
-
Definately going to be a bitch finding the best place for this to happen. I'm in FL (about 5 hours from Atlanta). Had fun helping out with NeoGeo cons back in the day. I'm more of a FX freak, but I could bring tons of Turbo/Laseractive stuff too. Blue Chicago Blues (in English) is a fantastic game!
-later gamers
scotty
PS. save a table for me..I'll send you a slightly used Keith Courage as a deposit!
-
I think a lot of us aren't going to be able to attend - like me for instance, who is a 7 hour drive north of the Montana border :)
OD
-
Well the date and location have pretty much been decided.-
What?:TurboGrafxFest 2007(is that name ok?)
When?:June 9-10 2007
WHERE?:Olympia Resort & Conference Center in Oconomowoc, WI.(Just minutes from downtown Milwaukee!)
A part of?: The Midwest Gaming Classic 2007! (http://www.midwestgamingclassic.com/content.php?id=index)
Now we just need to come up with ideas for events. Any ideas?
I think its obvious we could do some Bomberman tournaments, and maybe a Implode HighScore contest.
I am working on a website for announcements and events and other information, but in the meantime I created a TurboFest Forum here- (http://xsorbit30.com/users5/fanboyforums/index.php) so for those of you interested in being a part of TGF, or just want to chat about TGF or the Midwest Gaming Classic, feel free to sign up and post away!
TurboSage
-
I think Puyo Puyo and Asuka 120% would be good choices for events.
-
I thought we were using the name Turbo Fest  ? Oh well, TurboGrafx Fest works just as well and more people will probably understand the name that way. Here are some of my ideas:
System set ups (obvisouly). Probably be best to use the four major systems: PC Engine, Turbo Grafx 16 , Duo and Express. Also might be a good idea to include the CD add-ons for PCE and TG16. I can supply hardware if needed.
The Big Games - You all know what these are. Gates, Lords, Dracula X, Bonk, etc... The popular titles.
The Rare/Expensive Games - Sapphire, Renny Blaster, Magical Chase and such to show off the Turbo's pricey side.
Bonk Mascots - Joking.
Demo set ups - Set ups showing off technical demos made by various PCE programmers from around the world. I think it would be neat.
Homebrew booth - This kind of ties in with demo set ups, but focuses more on what's going on with MindRec, Frozen Utopia, or anyone else making full games for the system.
Five player game set ups - Set ups including five player games like Dungen Explorer, Bombermans, Moto Roader, etc...
Spin off systems - SuperGrafx and PC-FX displays.
-
Also, I think it would be a good idea to use any games with a "caravan" mode in it for competition use. Soldier Blade, Spriggan, Star Parodia, or if anyone has/willing to supply, the rare caravan HuCards of games like Blazing Lazers and Final Soldier or whatever they were.
-
Yep, I will totally dork it up and come to this.
Here are some other ideas...
everyone should obviously bring any extra games they have or anything they might be willing to sell or trade.
It would be cool if we could find someone who worked at Hudson, NEC or Working Designs to speak or answer questions.
Maybe a showcase of Turbo games on the Wii.
I don't know anything about the Midwest Gaming Classic, but we should try to get as many vendors with TG16 and PCE stock as possible. It would be fun if TZD had a table. It's easy to order from them, but it's so much more fun to buy games in person.
A Soldier Blade tournament using the 2 or 5 minute mode.
Maybe some tables with Turbo games side by side with their versions on other systems...Outrun, Ghouls and Ghosts, Ys....probably not Golden Axe. 8)
This would be a great place to play two-player games like Bomberman 93 on the Turbo Express. It's almost impossible to find a Turbo Link, let alone another person with a Turbo Express and another copy of the same game.
-
I was also thinking about two-player Turbo Express linking today. I would love to see that, mainly because I have never had the chance to hook up two Express'! We should see if we can get that Steve Griener guy, the president of Hudson Entertainment, to make it. He used to work with Hudson back in the Turbo days and has a lot of neat info about that kind of stuff and seems to enjoy talking about it. The problem is that he also seems to be a busy guy and I'm not sure if he would be willing to travel from CA to WI.
-
sounds very very funny, but just can't participate coz the way is far too long!
so have fun guys and shot a lot of intresting pix PLZ :D
-
Tatsujin, I so wish I could have attended that PCE festival in good old Switzerland with you and everyone else! That looked like a ton of fun.
-
I believe that for Turbolink, you can can just use a stereo cable with 2 Male DIN connection on each end. Falcon works via the link as well.
-
I believe there was a thread on here that talked about using a stereo cable as a Turbo Link. The only games I know of that use the Turbolink are:
Bomberman
Bomberman '93
Falcon
Some PCE puzzle game
I forget if Bomberman '94 had the link feature or not. Also does anyone know if you can do any multiplayer game with the Turbolink for two players, say Cadash? Or can it only be one of those Turbolink exclusive titles? I've been curious about this question for years.
-

I think to play multiplayer with TGE's the game has to have the multi-link option.
Also: I think around December we should make it OFFICIAL whether this is a go or not, and also solidify the name of the event.
These are a few I dug, but are not limited to:
TurboLife - TurboFest - TurboGrafxFest - DuoPalooza -
So sometime around Xmas we can start a poll and vote on the OFFICIAL NAME!!
thanks again for all the ideas, this is GONNA ROCK!
TurboSage
-
The game had to be specifically made to use the link.
-
Can anyone confirm if an 1/8" stereo cable works?
-
Eight more months until TurboFest :D .

Falcon can link? I hope it's for portable one on one dog fights, cause that'd be wicked awesome, no matter how choppy it is!
-
I've played Falcon over the link. I played Falcon and one of the Bomberman's at a CES.
-
How was Falcon with the link? I'm interested to know. We have to try linking up TE's at the MGC.
-
Well, I think it was like 1992 when I did so, but I thought that it played just like it did in Single Player.

Awesome. 8)

Wow, I remember this thread and recently saw that turbosage was starting to save money for this. I would love to go too!! Don't know if the time of year will be good though, but I'll def. be looking into it!
-
This was the thread that made me finally join instead of just lurk. I live in Minnesota and am seriously wanting to come to this. It is great it is going to be pretty close to me.
-
I'm looking very forward to TurboFest at the MGC. The MGC I went to last year was rad enough, but with a TurboFest it's only going to rule even more :) . Click here for a article I made about the previous MGC (http://www.lazerdorks.org/stunningarticles/mgc/index.html).

Alright, another MN resident. Welcome!
-
Thanks! I knew I remembered seeing someone else here from around the area.
-
I live in Minnesota too. Three Turbo fans in one state. That must be the record.
-
Holy crap -- I guess we just have good taste here.
-
Activity suggestion: 'name that VG tune'; have someone with a good videogame music collection to host this. they play random music, see if the audience can identify it, throw out bags of candy. for our purposes, of course, it should mostly be tg16 and maybe pcfx music.
-
I live in Minneapolis!
-
Damn, I don't know if it's safe to have all four of us in one state. If there was ever major disaster that wiped out Minnesota, the Turbo community might never recover from the loss of our combined knowledge. We'd probably take 20% of all available software with us too.
Kakizaki and runinruder, where do you guys live in Minnesota?
-
Keranu or Aaron, could we get the forums to display "location" again?
-

I can't do anything about that I'm afraid, or else I would. I'm very proud to display Crete, Illinois USA as my location!

Hey, I just had a smashing idea! How about we have this take place in Southern California, so that I can go!!!! And, I think there are a few others here! That would be the best! Dag nabbit, oh well, I thought it was a good idea ](*,) :D

Yeah, thats why everyone I knew in high school wanted to get the hell out...
-
Yeah, its mainly staying in the Milwaukee WI area because its going to be a part of The Midwest Gaming Classic.
A question: Is there anyone coming, that can fix TurboDuo's Lens? Just curious- it would be a killer way to make a couple bucks- as I need mine fixed...lol

Minnesota? Sounds cold...
How many people are going to this? I'd go if it were a huge convention. A room full of 15 people wouldn't be very exciting. Isn't 2007 the PCE 20th anniversary? Are there other PCE conventions happening in '07?
~
-
This is part of the Midwest Gaming Classic. Last year there were thousands of people there. Don't worry about being lonely.
-
Yeah the Midwest Gaming Classic was HUGE last year. However I can't say how many people will be gathering around the Turbo Fest section, but it will still be fun regardless.
-
Anyone from Chicago going? I never been to the midwest event so this would be a good chance to go to it.

I'm from the South Chicago subburb called "Crete" :) .

I know a few people from the Chicago area who went last year and are planning on going again next year.
-
I'll be there. I'm already planning on spending more time than last year.

Kakizaki and runinruder, where do you guys live in Minnesota?
Sorry I didn't see this sooner. I live to the northeast of Mankato -- about 45 minutes from the metro area. This time last year, I was working in Burnsville. How about you?
As for the remark about it being cold, it has been a pretty mild, for us anyway, this fall so far. Blah. I like it white for Christmas, not brown and dreary.
*edit -- Sorry, just saw on your profile, you listed Minneapolis.

I'm in Roseville.

Holy crap there are a lot of fellow Minnesotans on these forums! I had no idea. Remind me to let you guys know the next time Team Fremont is having an event. We're doing this one (http://teamfremont.com/newforums/index.php?topic=2285.0) in Madison, but maybe we'll do another one in Minneapolis sometime.

Yep, I live in NE Minneapolis these days. I grew up in Northfield and was a frequent Mankato visitor because my grandparents lived down there. There wasn't a business in Northfield that stocked anything remotely related to the Turbo so I had to buy my TG16 at the ToysR'Us in Burnsville. I later picked up my first Duo at the late-great Games To Go in Richfield in 97.
jlued686, runinruder, and Kakizaki:
it's cool to know you guys are out there. Keep me in mind if you're ever looking to sell or trade any duplicate games or extra gear (I have some odds and ends too, PM me). I also might be down for carpooling to Turbofest.

I later picked up my first Duo at the late-great Games To Go in Richfield in 97.
LOL! I bet it was the same Duo I had looked at a few times and wished I had the cash to buy! I sometimes liked those guys, and sometimes despised them. They could be kind of full of themselves at times. I bought a few 'new' Saturn titles from them. It was pretty clear that they had been resealed as there were finger prints on the games. Nonetheless, I was sad to see them close. That entire area has been demolished and rebuilt. I thought the larger fellow that was always there started his own store called Raven Games. I never visited it as I didn't know where it was. Sad to see that Wolfgames no longer replenishes his stock either.
-
I know this is totally off topic, but are there any stores in the Twin Cities besides Cedar Cliff and Toy Riffic that sell Turbo games?
-
 Jeez, I didn't know there were any. I don't suppose I could talk one of you fellows into PMing me or posting the address to these shops? Or if they have a website? I have some time off over the holidays and wouldn't mind checking these stores out.
-
I don't have the exact address on hand, but there's a Toy Riffic in Maplewood that sells Turbo games. Unfortunately, their selection is rather small. I believe they had Keith Courage, Victory Run, Riot Zone, Ninja Spirit, and maybe one or two others the last time I went there (two or three months ago). They also had a TurboExpress.
-

Check out www.cedarcliffcollectibles.com (http://www.cedarcliffcollectibles.com/)
And, as mentioned, Toy Riffic is in Maplewood and Hudson, though the Hudson store doesn't have Turbo games.

Josh,
Do you all have any plans for TurboFest '07? If so, perhaps we can
work
some stuff out with it in advance? It has always been a goal of mine
to
make the 'shows within a show' into something even better, and so far I
feel that only the Underdog Chamber has achieved this. I was hoping to
do
some neat additional stuff for both the Dreamcast and Jaguar this year,
but I need to figure out just what.
And don't worry, there is still plenty of time to figure stuff out :o)
Dan
So I guess its about 5 months away now- should we start seriously talking about who's all coming and helping with this?
So far I know theres Keranu and myself. Anyone else interested in contributing?
L8r guys,
TurboSage
-
Wow, I can't believe it's only five months away now!
Great to hear a response from Dan. I've been thinking about contacting him, but not too sure what info to give him besides this thread. I suppose we all need to finalize what's going to happen on Turbo Fest, so just give me a quick yay or nay for the following suggestions that have been posted already:
[ul][li]Tournaments (Games suggested: Bomberman, Implode, Puyo Puyo, Askua 120%, any shooter with a caravan mode [i.e., Soldier Blade])[/li][li]Game set ups (most likely using popular games like Bonk, Gate of Thunder, Dracula X, etc...)[/li][li]Bonk Mascots ( )[/li][li]Homebrew Section (including previews of upcoming games and tech demos being displayed)[/li][li]Spin off system displays (Super Grafx, PC-FX)[/li][li]Hudson / NEC / Working Designs ex-employee speaker[/li][li]Virtual Console showcase[/li][li]Side-by-side comparisons of ported games (such as Outrun, Ghouls and Ghosts, Ys)[/li][li]Turbo Linked Turbo Expresses[/li][li]Turbo game vendors[/li][/ul]
By the way, I finally figured out who Dan was just recently after finding a pic of him on the Midwest Gaming Classic site. It's pretty funny because I talked to that guy a couple times at the last MGC without having a clue who he was. He enjoyed my Back to the Future shirt.
-
DAMMIT!!! All this talk about a Turbo Fest and I can't go if my life depended on it! :x I really would like to meet up with you guys at this convention but unfortunately, I don't really have any Turbo systems or games to contribute. Not to mention that I live all the way up here in Canada so cross border travel is pretty tricky in this post 9/11 world.
Anyways, it's great to see you guys very eager in getting this convention under way. While I can't contribute directly to TurboFest, I could make a few suggestions:
[ul][li]Get some Valis cosplayers. Nobody will be able to resist going to TurboFest if they see hot babes promoting Turbo goods and games.[/li][li]In addition to classic Turbo consoles, you could also have a Wii setup with the latest Turbo games like Bomberman '93 and Military Madness. Nintendo raising the Turbografx back up from obscurity is a blessing to all Turbo fans and it would be a good show of appreciation to have a Wii with Turbo games ready to play.[/li][li]If possible, make some paper Bonk or King Drool cutouts with the words "Bonk was here" or "King Drool was here" and paste them up everywhere to get people noticing (in addition to the TurboFest logo on the cutouts as well).[/li][/ul](http://lw90210.x10hosting.com/img/turbofest/turbo fest 07 take one.jpg)
Nice MS paint job, Sage.

Damn you little teases! Chances are TOO slim since I'm in Virginia....

I'll be there!
Team Fremont's going to be hosting a booth again, so I'll be happy to bring some stuff; provided it's safe, of course. I've got two Duos and was planning on bringing one for our booth. If you need another, let me know. Also, we'll be happy to put up signs and mention the Turbo Fest over our PA system, etc. Just let me know.
Also, in case you guys are interested, we're also hosting an event next weekend in Madison, WI. There's going to be tons of Turbo gaming, and video game stuff going on. If you're in the area, check it out. All the info you need is here:
http://teamfremont.com/newforums/index.php?topic=2285.0
Anyway, PM me if you need help with the Turbo Fest. I'll be more than happy to do whatever I can to help.
-
Will someone be dressed up as the Hudson Bee for this event? If you can't get the likeness down pat, you could always try getting a cheap bumblebee costume from your local San Francisco. :)
-
I'd come dressed as Kabuki if it wasn't so far away.
-
Maybe you guys ought to find a random bald guy and ask him to be your Bonk mascot. You could call him "Bonk: the later years" or something like that. :P

once I get some more info from Dan I'll post them up here.

I would not be against cosplaying at the turbo fest. I've already been plotting master higgins and bomberman costumes; bonk might not be too hard either, but the hudson bee would be difficult. (bee costume with giant googly eyes, and boxing gloves?)
-
I would like to cosplay as J.J. and Jeff with my brother.
-
I was digging through some boxes of 'junk' and found a few things that I will be bringing.
Some old EGM's. And VG&CE's that focused on lots of killer Turbo Reviews and Ads and Previews.
my 1-800-DUO-THIS catalogs. and other Turbo TZD Oddities.
Also looking to get a collection of Turbo Video's off of youtube, and putting them on VCR/DVD tapes so we can show off some of the goofy old Turbo Promotional videos and commercials. I was planning on using my Wii for that... any other suggestions. (I'm actually shocked at how well the Wii displays Youtube videos on fullscreen. It looks good on a TV screen...just too bad about the annoying Wii browser bar on the bottom of the screen..)
