Hi everyone,
thought I'd say hi, signed up the other day after purchasing my first TG-16.
I've always been a NES guy since I got my first one for Christmas '89 but I fancied a change.
I was swayed by the good selection of shooters available for the system so I bought a new one from a guy over here along with a good handful of games.
Gotta say I'm loving it, so far I've been smashing Legendary Axe and Blazing Lasers every night for the last week. In desperate need of a controller lead extension tho, went to itch my nose the other night and pulled the whole console off the shelf.
Anyway I going to have a good read through the forum to expand my knowledge base, no doubt I'll have a few questions, too, but in the mean time if any of you could point me in the direction of any trusted sellers/shops/resources that'd be awesome.
Alex. O:)
-
Welcome, comrade. :)
Legendary Axe & Blazing Lazers = excellent intro to TG-16...I myself had both titles when I bought the console in 1989.
Also, even though I love TG-16, I was (and always will be) sharing my heart with NES/Famicom...
So, feel free to discuss NES games...and to ask questions/share your impressions of TG-16 games (precious little discussion of folks actually playing games here).
Also, you have to tell us what part of the UK you are from. OTHERWISE I will assume you live on the Shetland Islands and burn fish scales to generate electricity.
-
Welcome aboard!

Welcome to the board :D

Interesting choice as the NES was never big here in the UK, we're one the few places where the Master System was more popular.

I'm from Barnsley in South Yorkshire. :-"

Thanks. :D

Both my cousins had one, after playing RC Pro Am/Mario/Burai Fighter I was hooked, plus it made my Sinclair Spectrum +3 graphics look like they were made of Play-doh.

Aww mate, that's brilliant :D
Especially liking the shooters section stating wether they're HU or CD. That's a massive help.

Not games, "conversational pieces"...'tards cannot be bothered to play 'em, too busy getting the r@r3s.
Anyhoo...now that you know I'm an pissy ass, welcome to the forums! Hope being over seas does not inflate the price of obey even more...do not be put off by el cheapo hueys, lots of fun to be had without reaching for mythical Chases and Fantastic Heroes.
-
Welcome! If you love the NES (I do too) you should immediately fall in love with the TG. The Turbo, to me almost feels like a natural progression of the NES. Similar controller's and the game play feels similar. Of course, with the TG you generally don't get sprite flicker or slow down and the graphics are better. Now get yourself a CD unit and enjoy the amazing soundtracks and botched voice acting.
-
Right, first noob question. OBEY? I'm sure it'll stand for something, initials maybe???
Not sure how easy/hard it'll be to get hold of games and accessories over here, only been into it a week.
Not afraid to import so no problem really, I ordered a TED on Tuesday so I'll probably work it like I do the NES, try out games then buy the actual copies if I like it. That way I'm not wasting money on games I don't play or find interesting.
I'm actually going to a classic console shop tomorrow so I'll ask and see what's what.
I have noticed on the later levels of Blazing Lazers when things start getting warmed up the lack of any flicker or slow down (awesome), unlike the NES, especially Gradius or Recca.

One does not simply ask how to obey.

Over the last 5 years TurboGrafx 16 games have got crazy expensive. Not a good time to get into it.
Japanese PC Engine game prices have mostly stayed the same, maybe even dropped a little.

Just looked through about 8 pages of that, apart from something about John Carpenter (love his films, not seen "they live") I'm stil non the wiser.
Feel like I've just walked in a party half way thru and everyone is referencing a joke from earlier in the night.
So is it something that started as a joke and then has become a "thing"?

Ok, I had a perfectly good tg-16. A little scratched maybe, but perfectly good. Today I saw an almost mint in box tg-16 for sale on craigslist. No price listed. Had to have it, called the guy, he wanted $120 - fine. Now I've got 2. Is there something wrong with me?
Excellent, Excellent, You're leaning to OBEY correctly.
Also I own atm:
Tg-16 W BOX
Tg-16 W CD and Clamshell
US DUO
DOU RX
Turbo Express
If anything you need to catch up:
Also this..............

One is enough for me. Maybe two, one as a backup, but I don't want to hoard stuff. I just want to OBEY, not keep others from OBEY.
I think I may have joined a cult. 8-[

Al, what are you running as far as OBEY? PC engine? Turbo Grafx? Or one of the many variants of DUOS? If you have a U.S Duo, you probably want to get that puppy recapped as soon as possible, Keith Courage would be the man to talk to on capping and possibly selling refurbished units.
-
Alex, here is a list of shooters, which you can re-sort by various categories:

I'm running a TurboGrafx, there's a guy over here selling new old stock TG-16's, for £89 I thought "why not"

Gotta knock off Tatsujin and Magical Chase the to-beat list some time. I used to think I had beaten all the non-CD shooters at least, but I still have a good amount to left. Coryoon looks nice and colorful, I missed that too.

TurboGrafx-16 or just plain TurboGrafx? I picked up one of the TGs for shits and giggles, but I've nothing that'll accept PAL. :|

Magical Chase and Coryoon are definitely doable, but good luck with Tatsujin. I think it hates me.

My bad, just regular TurboGrafx
Well today was a bust, went in the afore mentioned retro game shop and the dude behind the counter hadn't even heard of PC Engines or TurboGrafx. ](*,)

These days it's extremely rare to find a bricks and mortar retro game shop here in the UK, let alone one that's heard of PC Engine or TurboGrafx.
The only one I know of is Raven Games in London and I'm not even sure if their bricks and mortar shop is still going, also their prices since back in the day have always been really high.
-
^^ this. Japan and USA had the stuff but there were very limited release in any part of Europe so most European probably have never heard or seen one at all.

To be fair to the bloke he said he couldn't help with anything "technical", maybe he was standing in for someone, it was around lunch time???
Got another couple of questions for you guys; will my plain old TurboGrafx play all Hu cards (except SuperGrafx ones) with the appropriate adaptor?
Also, is there regional lockout between US and European Hu cards?

Yes.

There are no European HuCards. They're all either JP or NA, even the Korean ones were just NA games with stickers.
-
No, I'm not a violent man.
I was a little shocked he hadn't even heard of them, even tho I've only been an owner exactly one week today, they had been on my radar for years.
I'm glad I can play everything available, then.
How easy/hard are CD attachments to get hold of and can you Jerry rig a PC Engine CD to a TG?
Some awesome looking shooters I'd like to get my teeth into.
-
Beware of Valkyrie no densetsu. When I tried to play on adapter it kept locking up on title screen. Works just fine on my PCE tho
-
How easy/hard are CD attachments to get hold of.....
In the UK, you're probably screwed without spending big monies importing. Even in the US you're often better off just getting a PCE Duo, then you won't need a Super System Card, can get by with a cheaper Arcade Card Duo (vs. the Pro), and will be able to play the few GE games that need the extra ram of a Duo.
..... and can you Jerry rig a PC Engine CD to a TG?
The PCE CD slips right in to a TG interface unit, and you could cobble together a cable to go between the TG expansion port and a PCE IFU (or SuperCD add-on), but that'd be one ugly setup.

About the Euro Turbografx, keep in mind this system plays games only at 5/6 speed of the original. I guess the music will be played slower, too. Just like the majority of PAL Mega Drive and Master System releases, where a lot of developers didn't care about adjusting the game speed (50Hz PAL vs 60 Hz NTSC), screen resolution (576 lines PAL vs 480 lines NTSC, thus PAL bars) and music speed.
Well, in case of the PAL Sega consoles, it is really easy to modify them to play PAL games in 60Hz, full screen and correct music speed. Regarding the Euro Turbob, please see this thread for more information, there's a little bit of labour involved:

Talk to Chop5 to see if he has any chopsodos available to play Japanese Hucards. As mentioned before, your best bet would just get a Japanese Duo or Duo -R as that would be cheaper than getting the cd attachment with a US System 3.0 card. Again, check with Keith Courage to see if he has any refurb units for sale...

I had been looking at some adaptors from db electronics, The PC Henshin so I'll probably grab one of those along with the GrafxBooster when it's for sale to help save a bit on shipping.
I think the best course of action is to work through the Hu Cards and find the ones I want to own the physical copies of, I'm not out to own every game as I know they'll be ones I wont play so no point owning them, after that I'll look to the CD games and a Duo.
A few more games have just turned up as I type so I've got a good few to go at before I think about buying more.
So far the collection stands at 9 games, I bought these with the console:
Blazing Lazers
J.J. and Jeff
Cratermaze
Alien Crush
Legendary Axe
These just turned up:
Vigilante
Galaga '90
Ninja Spirit
Dragon Spirit
I've just about completed Blazing Lazers, although I'm sure I read about a code you can input to change the difficulty settings???
Legendary Axe is kicking my arse a bit but it's really enjoyable.
I've not put that much time into the others but I think J.J and Jeff could be good with some perseverance, Cratermaze seems a bit easy but I get the feeling there's more to the game than I realise. Either that or it'll end up being a bit dull.

Yeah, that's a bit Heath Robinson.
I find the Duo a bit uninspiring tho.
There was a CoreGrafx 2 with a CD attachment in the same colour on eBay the other day, the CD was just clipped into the rear port, out of all that I've seen so far, that was the most aesthetically pleasing.

I'm guessing he's a disorganized British guy (possibly drank his tea from his crumpet dish and crumpets from tea cups)?

Heath Robinson was and artist famous for his drawings of "contraptions" that were overly complicated. I'm sure he was a fan of Crumpets, most folk are.

As for the Duo, I think it's to do with the mauve details maybe?? Idk, probably much the same as one guy preferring Blondes over Brunettes, it's all down to personal preference.

The US Duo is where it's at - same sexy shape but all black.

It's hilarious when non British people think of stereotypes of Britishness. Pretty much spot on with the drinking tea though, it is pretty much an institution here (in England). Not sure about crumpets though.

HELPFUL GUIDE:
http://pcenginefx.com/main/nec_compatibility_guide.html
8bitAl: I prefer the PCE/TG-16 and all the quirky "Heath Robinson" configurations to the DUO (the DUO is nice, certainly, but lacks all the charm and personality of the other PCE/TG-16 hardware).
The GRAY CD hardware you posted is known as SUPER CD (not to be confused with the Super CD-ROM2 (SCD) format, which was an upgrade from the original CD-ROM2 format for games).
Yes, it gets confusing.

That's the word I was looking for, personality. Yes , things need a personality! I drive a n '89 Mk2 Golf Gti
for that very reason.
So let me get this right; the orange and grey CoreGrafx 2 has a super CD plumbed into the back of it?
Will said CD attachment play all CD games with the correct Hu card stuck in the front?

^ Let's do this like maths:
White PCE (original model) + SCD =
CoreGrafx I (blue logo) + SCD =
CoreGrafx II (orange logo) + SCD =
DUO
The SCD (and the DUO) has a System Card 3.0 built-in, so you can play 98% of the PCE library with PCE + SCD.
If you want to play the ARCADE CD-ROM2 titles, you'll need an Arcade System Card (two versions exist, either one will work).
One game, due to quirks, will only play with System Card 1.0: Altered Beast CD-ROM. You can play with other system cards, but the game will crash at some point (I'll allow other folks to provide the details).

Dollars is fine as things I buy from Japan are usually priced that way. :)

A pint of bitter ... Theakston's XB please, if you're buying! Oh ... and a packet of "scratchings", too.

Super Grafx + SuperCDROM! :D

I can't see that happening, got to have matching orange logos otherwise I'm likely to explode from ocd overload.

Great! I'll check him out.
Too late for the everdrive, it landed the other day. Apparently it's ok with Pal TurboGrafx. Time will tell, just waiting on a SD card then I'm going to give it a whirl.
Like a kid in a sweet shop at the mo'.

It's hilarious when non British people think of stereotypes of Britishness. Pretty much spot on with the drinking tea though, it is pretty much an institution here (in England). Not sure about crumpets though.
Then just what do you have for a snack after a long game of Cricket?
Good question, I'm not sure, but definitely never heard of cricket with crumpets. :D
I love cricket with strumpets.
Or, I'll just take the strumpets.
I'm not English, though.
In this day and age, in the UK, after cricket your more likely to go to the pub and drink a Danish/Belgian/Italian pint then walk to the kebab shop on your way home.
England isn't all "jolly hockey sticks" and "tea on the lawn with the vicar" any more (well maybe some places) as UK foreign policy on migrants and our membership in the EU has seen us become a melting pot of cultures. The "hockey" and "tea" bit is also seen by some as quite twee.
I myself am of Polish decent (grandad came over after being displaced in WW2) and am in no way xenophobic, but we do seem to be having our national identity diluted slightly.
I must say, I do prefer the England I grew up in in the 80's, tho this implies I've actually grow up.
Anyway, I'll steer this back on course with another question.
Has anyone with a Pal TG had any issues with the V2 everdrive, hope I haven't pulled the trigger too soon and wasted my hard earned. ](*,)

Since the PAL TG is very similar in design to the US TG16 ... I'd probably expected similar results. i.e. it would work with some TED2s and fail with others ... but always fail if the TG is plugged into a TGCD or TG Booster+.
What are you seeing?

London has become a massive multicultural hub with all the cultures of the world mixed up together, finding a stereotypical cockney Londoner is a rare thing these days.
Outside London and the big cities quite a few parts of England still meets the "cricket on the village green" stereotype, the small village I currently live in certainly does.

I think most folks recognize that there are caricatures of what distinctly "American" or "English" culture is like, and that these things are primarily fueled by pop culture and media.
Now, pop culture/media is never an accurate representation of a nation, but the fiction/caricature has a scary power of its own. So even semi-intelligent people fall victim to this fiction.
For example, most people who live in the U.S. have a *distorted* view of what San Francisco or L.A. Or NYC is *truly* like, because they have been informed by America's own myths/lore/media/pop culture about these cities. Plus, a person's prejudices come into play as they *interpret* these myths/lore/media representations. I wonder how many people are aware of the extent that they are basing their views on limited/faulty information.
So, if Americans have distorted views of regions/cities within America itself, I shudder to think how distorted an American's perspective on Europe/UK might be.
Luckily, I watched East Enders throughout the 80's/early-90's, so I know what *real* London is all about.
I live in New Jersey, by the way, which has been the butt of jokes for decades, so this topic (caricatures of a region/state/city/country) have always intrigued me.
Sadly, for New Jersey, some of the caricatures are true. Ha!
:)
* I use "caricature" because it is a friendlier, less-severe sounding term than "stereotype"...but, of course, I am discussing stereotypes.
I'll stop babbling now.

Especially if the stereotypes are negative, people find it easy to believe bad things and difficult to believe good. Unfortunately. ](*,)
My SD card hasn't turned up yet so I'm not up and running with the TED at the moment.
Hopefully it'll be ok. :?

Just to say what I said about London being a "massive multicultural hub" wasn't a criticism, was saying as a good thing. It's a diverse, exciting, vibrant city.
My point was it's now nothing like what was seen in East Enders in the 80s and 90s, that seems to not exist any more.

I understood it as a positive, mate. :D

Oh, heck yes. I never thought you meant otherwise. :)
I was joking about East Enders, of course. I should have put " :) " at the end of that sentence in my post.
Also, I am biased towards urban/metropolitan areas (they tend to be more progressive than the rural areas of America, but hey, maybe I'm wrong about that...sometimes you get interesting communities around colleges stuck in the middle of nowhere...see my bias against non-cities?).
You would probably not be surprised to hear that a lot of Americans, who are clueless about the history of colonialism, don't have the faintest idea of how England has evolved over the last century. They are still stuck in Agatha Christie's England.
I'll admit that the start of my own understanding of how decolonization/economic/social/political forces --> UK/England was listening to British pop music and watching British TV/films in the 80's/90's, so I guess pop culture can lead to a *slight* reduction of ignorance (bhangra, ska, reggae, punk, etc. etc. + music zines all hinted at things).
So, there you go.
