Title: Johnny Turbo's daughter contacted me
Post by: Joe Redifer on June 19, 2016, 07:08:42 PM
She wants me to interview her dad. I have no idea what I would ask him. Nor do I have any clue how I could incorporate it into my media offerings. So I never got back to her.
Also did you know NEC Avenue published the arrange soundtrack to Panzer Dragoon Zwei? What do you think of this highly controversial subject?
Also, Red Vines or Twizzlers?

Have people submit questions they want you to ask him and feature it on the Sack.
My question: Boxers or briefs or both or neither. There, you are welcome.
I had no idea that NEC Avenue published the arrange soundtrack to Panzer Dragoon Zimbabwe. I am intrigued. Thank you for that.
Red Vines sound like some sort of ghetto liquor store brand version of twizzler, I think I would choose them for obvious reasons. Although, saying "Twizzler!" is its own kind of fun that, seemingly, at least to me, would last the span of no less than three (3) beej's.
Thank you, you've been lovely. I'm really tired. Yay.

I recently discovered Dr. Pepper flavored licorice at one of my local dollar stores, I'm kind of addicted now. I don't think it's made by Red Vines or Twizzler though, says Kenny's Candy Company on the back. In Googlin', looks like they have a few different flavors, like A&W & such. Sadly didn't see Mountain Dew, Pepsi, or Sunkist flavored.

That's awesome.
You have to film footage. It doesn't matter if you have any plans for it, you WILL use it. At some point. Even if it is published on the Night of the Apocalypse, it will be worth it (I tend to watch videos when society/life-as-we-know-it crumbles...I find videos comforting).
Personally, the most obvious project is a simple, respectful "history of TG-16" mini-documentary. Something that is not designed to be a joke. Even if it was only a few minutes long.
ASIDE: I have had random folks (artists, journalists, etc.) contact me over the past decade, but I couldn't verify that everyone was legit. Most were.
Anyway, only one FMV actor (not verified) contacted me. Nothing groundbreaking. He didn't really remember anything. I like to think that he was legit, because the exchange was so normal/uneventful.
I never updated that old page because I don't know if my exchange was legit.
BOTTOM LINE: If you have a chance for interviewing J.B., you gotta document all the TG-16 and Sega stuff he was involved with.
See if he has any clear info on user base (TG-CD, TG-16), the DUO Intelligent Link prototype (he demoed it on Computer Chronicles), the demise of TTi (his transition to Sega), the similarities/differences between experiences at NEC/TTi vs. Sega. His specific roles, duties, tasks...uncredited work/unreleased stuff he was involved with (or simply aware of—Riftwar Saga, Dangerous Journeys, etc.).

Did they really only do the Johnny Turbo thing because their boss at TTI couldn't understand the joke? (http://www.video-game-ephemera.com/041.htm)
Also does he still have any prototypes from back then? And what's the story with Fantasy Star Soldier, a game that's pretty much complete, but never released.

Sooooo..... what's the daughter look like? Tit pics or GTFO! 8-[
A real question if you ever talk to him: did they have plans to stick him and Tony into any games, either as main characters or as easter eggs?

Also Red Vines over Twizzlers any day. Preferring Twizzlers is un-American.

Ha! Yeah, that's not going to happen. I've been a member here for a long-ass time and I remember perhaps three people here in all that while who I believed to actually be female and I don't think it has anything to do with speach habits of the knuckle dragging troglodytes that haunt the place. Another forum we both go to is exhaustingly pro-feminine and has about the same percentage of ladies.
I'm not saying this kind of juvenile chauvinism isn't gross. It bothers me, sure, but if I cared I'd complain on behalf of myself, not some mythical female. There isn't much point in catering the forum away from the people who are actually here for the benefit of someone who isn't.
Half these guys just stopped calling everything "gay" about six months ago. Cut them some slack. :) Also, we are way ahead of the curve on the "Jap" thing. Even Brits say "JP" here.
As for the original topic...I thought he was a drawing from a fake comic book/real magazine ad. Were there TV ads or something? Either way, if he's a real dude and someone tied to that era I'd interview him that day. I don't know WTF your problem is.

There is a road near my home that used to be called Jap Lane and a just a few years ago the town got all politically correct and changed the name.
Edit: I hate all forms of licorice and anyone who does. I guess that explains why my dad and I don't get along. (https://s3.amazonaws.com/tapatalk-emoji/emoji1.png)

I get why people don't like the usage of 'jap' here but for me it is nonsense. We tend to use it as a 3-char abbreviation of "Japan", and not as a term for japanese people. Of course we could also use 'JPN' but I don't think it's that big of an issue since the intended meaning is 100% clear. Very different from writing 'gook', 'kike' or whatever other derogatory word edgy internet kids use nowadays.
PS: Licorice bad.

Punch - it's because it was used as a racist slur against japanese people in world war II - some grandparents still use it that way.
Zeta, I see no particular reason to cut anyone slack! nobody would stop calling things gay or using the word jap if slack were cut!
Regardless of whether you think women don't come here because of the knuckle dragging (it can't be proved either way), I sure wouldn't want johnny turbo's daughter to come see it, which, well, I mean let's just keep that in mind all the time, and maybe we'll get somewhere.

I'm curious if there's any information JB could give us about announced games that were never released. I know there are more, but a few that spring to my mind are: Tengai Makyou 2, Cosmic Fantasy 3, Record of Loddoss War, Macross, Populous, and Spirggan.
Also, anyone wanting communistic red vines over twizzlers is a dumbzo-head.

it's only obviously a joke if people know you .....
Just in case you missed the smiley or couldn't figure out what it meant, the joke was immediately followed with "A real question....", implying that the preceding wasn't meant to be taken seriously. In other words, learn to read for context.
Not that I really give a shit. I have no need to become some super-PC metrosexual jackhole in hopes that a female will join, like the cut of my jib, help me move out of mommy's basement, and finally lose my virginity.

So if it's a joke, can you just... identify what the funny/joke part of it is? Putting a smiley after it doesn't make you unsay the sentiment. It is not much of a joke!
I think you're getting pretty worked up into a lot of name calling over a request to just like... not make the kind of offhand glib comment that would be uncomfortable for 50% of the world's population. I think it's a pretty reasonable request!

1- the userbase of PCEFX.com (a site which only show posts to registered users and isn't indexed by google) isn't 50% of the population 2- 50% is not a correct percentage for woman/men ratio 3- you're implying that ALL women would feel uncomfortable with a dumb joke which isn't true. 4- licorice is real bad

Don't even waste your time arguing with these troglodytes.
Obviously, we know you had good intentions, but since douchebaggery is kool and trendy (one need look no further than Trump), douchebaggery is what you shall receive.
Now, for the record, a smiley face/emoticon after a "rude" statement is a signal to the reader, from the author, that they are not 100% serious.
So, this needless drama stems from a misunderstanding.

Black Licorice blows. Red is ok, but twizzlers can be a little bland. I love the rainbow pull and peel ones. The best kind are the filled twizzlers with that tart cherry or orange stuff.

Come on guys! Please heed exodus' advice. Stop chasing the women away. It will ruin the main reason I joined here.
FYI here are the reasons I joined in order of importance: 1.) To meet girls and get laid 2.) Enter raffles 3.) Be a parasite to the community 4.) Start shit in fighting street 5.) Talk about video games
Back to Joe's original question... I'd just like to know what it was like working in NEC/TTi back in the day. We got a bit of a look at Sega and Nintendo in the book Console Wars so it would be interesting to know what it was like at the third wheel.

Well, you have to really like black licorice if you're gonna try salmiakki. It's definitely an acquired taste and is not for black licorice n00bs. It has a very strong anise flavor, is very salty, and is salted with ammonium chloride rather than sodium chloride, so that has its own thing going on as well. The first time I tried it I hated it because I didn't know what to expect. But I was in Finland, and a guy brought me a whole bag and I didn't want to seem like I was being unappreciative so I kept messing around with it until, by the time I was ready to come home, I was stocking up on the shit at the candy store so that I'd have plenty to bring home.
I used to hate black licorice, but it's just an acquired taste. But I've always liked root beer and I love cooking with fennel, so it's not like I hated that flavor. I started off with black licorice saltwater taffy, which is very mild (almost like root beer) and then just kept cranking it up a notch.

I never did like root beer either, but to each his own. My friend from high school was obsessed with Super Piratos which is probably the same sort of thing you're talking about here. I tried a piece and I think we both agreed it was probably like having a cat blast hot pee down your throat except unlike me he considered that a good candy experience.

OK, I ordered a pound of salty licorice just now. It wasn't a Finnish brand, but a Dutch one. I was fearful of the "double salt" stuff, so I started with "salt". I'll eventually try the double-salted variety if I can handle the ammonium chloride.
:)
I think I have 1-3 local shops that have licorice candies, I'll have to see if they have any with this salmiakki poison-salt :)

Fresh and moist Red Vines (the older fat ones, not the new fangled skinny ones) cannot be beat. However, fresh moist red rope licorice comes in a pretty damn close 2nd.
Who hasn't dreamed of having one of these in their car? I rest my case.

Esteban, you ever try salmiakki? That shit is the shizznizzle.
I don't think so, and now I am intrigued. I am going to try to order it...any hints or suggestions would be appreciated. :)
To be honest, that might be the best way to go anyway. Start off with some mild salty stuff and work your way up. Salted licorice is great because sweet/salty is an awesome combo. Anyway, let me know how you like whatever you get, because maybe I'll want to get some!

These are what I was talking about: (https://d1kga0hijum0zx.cloudfront.net/380x380/104531.jpg)
I don't like them but Haribo is a great brand, I believe it's the salted licorice you guys are talking about, but who knows, maybe it's different.
I haven't had Red Vines but now I'm going to try a bag just to see how they compare. I think regular twizzlers are kinda waxy and hard, I really only like the pull n' peel ones.

I'm not the sort that usually overdoes it on junk food, but I have a weakness for Twizzlers. I will eat an entire bag in one sitting. I actually don't usually buy them for myself because of this.
Anyhow, regarding the interview, what sort of interview are we talking, anyhow? Email? Skype? Face-to-face? It may not be the sort of content you usually produce, but it does seem like something that would be of interest to your audience. Let me try and remember some of the advice I've been given regarding conducting interviews.
First off, research. You should know as much as possible about your subject before talking to him. You don't want to ask the same questions he's heard hundreds of times already, or blunder into a sensitive subject right at the start.
Second, try to ask open-ended questions. Don't phrase them in a way that can be answered with a simple "yes" or "no", because that's likely to be what you get. Less, "do you like TurboGrafx-16?" More, "what drew you to the TurboGrafx-16?"
A corollary to that is, assuming this is a live interaction of some sort, don't rigidly read down the line of your prepared questions. Listen carefully to your subject's answers; they very well may say something that leads to an interesting follow-up question that you didn't anticipate. Further, by showing that you're paying attention and are interested in what he has to say, you're building rapport with your subject which may allow you to touch on more sensitive topics that he wouldn't be willing to discuss otherwise.
I feel like there's something else, but it's not coming to me. This may be reiterating an earlier point, but the phrasing of your questions is important. The more thoughtfully you ask a question, the more thoughtful a response you're likely to get. It's likely to make a difference in the quality of answer you get if your subject can tell you're serious and are treating him with respect.
That's about all I can think of. Good luck if you move forward with this.

It's sitting in my garage right now, the pack-in was "Magical Chase" and the console was renamed "Turbo Gráficos Dezesseis" $150 CIB want one?
No, the "Turbo Gráficos 16 III" would come with built-in Magical Chase but without CD compatibilty and a redesigned shell, the first version would come with Moto Roader/Ballistix and the second version with Bonk's Adventure, Tec Toy-style

I'd like to know a bit more about the development of the few US only games. Also, whose bright idea was it to make the TG16s controller port larger than the PCE's? How much autonomy did you have and how much were you the underling of NEC Japan?
Heh, I can answer that for you; the ex-Atari employees NEC highered to handle the localization and initial launch of the system. The jerks actually delayed the release of the TG16 by almost a year because of the case redesign.

I would appreciate learning more about this, some kind of reference too. The stupidity of the TG-16's industrial design has baffled me for ages.

Not sure if we are still in licorice territory here, but if it is, Sweet Tarts Ropes are phenomenal.
There is only one flavor of licorice. Licorice flavor. The anus flavored "candy" enjoyed exclusively by old people, some Europeans, and weirdoes. All this Willy Wonka bullshit you guys keep bringing up is just...candy. Unlike licorice it actually tastes *better* than Brussels sprouts with bouillon cubes hiden inside.
Licorice is so gross. It's like the haggis of candy. Really, it's only technically candy by virtue of all the perfectly good sugar it wastes. Nothing else 1/10 as disgusting would ever claim to be a treat. When people pretend to like it just to seem tough it offends me, and I pretend a lot of things myself...but come on. That shit doesn't even resemble a good taste. It doesn't even resemble a bad taste. It doesn't resemble food. It's like some one just handed you a little compressed hunk of that black bioslime that drain flies live in, or the greese you see dripping from fairground rides. One of the worst flavors I've ever experienced and I don't see why it continues to be manufactured.
I mean, I hate spiced jelly beans, anything with cocoanut filings in it, and fake peach flavoring quite a bit, but I'd strap a feed bag filled with cocoanut caked spicy peach jelly beans to my head before I ate a single piece of licorice. I'd rather share treats with my dogs, no, my CATS. That's how gross licorice is. Worse than a cat treat.
I wish I could say more but that's probably enough to permanently derail this thread.

You are missing out, comrade. :(
I mean, I cannot imagine a world without, say, cumin.
I also LOVE burnt toast.
Anise = amazing, especially if it is not overloaded with too much sugar.
I drink my coffee black.
I like espresso.
I like tea, without anything added.
I love lemongrass.
The bitterest beers are the best beers.
THE BITTEREST BEERS ARE THE BEST BEERS.
I love cumin. I put it on my salad. Everything. Popcorn. I love cumin.
I love very hot (spicy) foods from all cuisines Indian, Thai, Chinese, Persian, Italian, etc. (not so hot that I develop a fever, though).
I love nori/seaweed
Horseradish/wasabi
Tabasco.
Black pepper.
I have to stop, but I could go on and on.
Oh, and I love licorice! Black, delightful, heavenly licorice.
Onions!!! Leeks!!! Chives!!!!
Licorice, too.

There's an interview/article that surfaced recently, from the guy in change or part of the TG16 launch. I was surprised that ex-atari employees were running this, but it makes sense (they don't have home console PR experience).

esteban, we have very similar taste . minus the burnt toast. I find after u get used to very flavorful things, other tastes become more boring.
You said in another post you dislike jagermeister ... but have you tried the less sweet italian style bitters (amaro)?? Fernet Branca???? my #1.
that being said i also go for some less flavorful stuff too, like german food.

O'Douls, hands down. The Jaguar isn't better than anything.
I've never played a jaguar outside of kiosks bitd, but theres no way there is anything worse than o'douls.
O'Douls is non-alcoholic beer, have you tried it? I know the games suck on Jaguar, but at least there are games. O'Doul's is more comparable to a tiger handheld, barely enough game there to justify calling it game.
