Title: Barbarian on PCE
Post by: F.L on December 18, 2016, 06:19:25 AM
hello
i'm new on the forum.
i'm a french coder and i like to remake old games
my favourite is barbarian, the famous 1987 game of palace software
in 2012,i have remake this game in basic for PC (with qb64)
in 2014, i have ported the game on megadrive/genesis (with bex)
to see my old remake, go to my website
and now my project is to port the game on PC engine  :dance:
why the PCE ?
because i was seduced by the power of the console, and the simplicity of its language : Huc
Especially for this occasion, I learned the language C
and since one month, i trie to tame the beast  :D
here is a screenshot :
(http://fl.basic.free.fr/images/divers/pcengine.jpg)
the development is progressing well, the game is now 100% working :
update of 03/21/2017 :
here is the link of roms :

thanks to TOUKO for the help
and to Arkhan for the fantastic music theme !

i hope you will enjoy my project

I never thought I would say this about Barbarian, but..."Yes!"

I know this game well. Of course, when I played it as a kid, I just jammed the joystick and mashed buttons.

Hopefully the PCE version will feature a glorious, extended soundtrack (with alternate, remixed soundtrack available).

I CAN DREAM.

:)

We support your efforts, comrade.

Unfortunately no, F.L is new on PCE and C, and i don't want to add new difficulties.
This is why for his first project i suggested him to stay on the old release for simplicity.

What difficulties???  :-k

I initially set up Catastrophy for DarkKobold and Gredler so that they could switch between the old compiler and the new compiler, and everything ran fine with both versions.

Then they started to use some of Uli's features in the new HuC (like ANSI prototypes and C++ comments), so now they're pretty-much-committed to the new compiler, with its speed improvements and smaller code size.

I can understand folks like The Old Rover being cautious about switching ... but for someone new to the platform, I only see benefits at this point.

To integrate squirrel and my PCM driver .
I know well the old release, and it was easy and faster to integrate those 2 things without breaking anything .

Welcome aboard and good luck with your game.  I had to google it, but it looks interesting, like a blend of pit fighter and mortal kombat but with swords and loin cloths.  :mrgreen:

There's not much that I can do about your PCM driver, but that *should* just be a case of setting up the timer IRQ.

It would certainly be nice if Aetherbyte got around to officially releasing the new version of Squirrel, but I can always send you the same version that the Catastrophy guys are using (and that I sent to Aetherbyte).

Of course is not an impossible or too difficult problem, this is really because the time and also because i already know (i did it) how to integrate the 2 things with a custom huc quickly without any problems .
F.L started this project only 1/2 weeks ago,and i hope for future projects he will use the latest version .

It looks like he's made great progress in such a short time!  :)

You shouldn't have any problem setting up your timer IRQ in the new HuC ... the changes in there aren't too significant.

You can override the timer IRQ and supply your own in exactly the same way as before, or you can edit the new macro in Squirrel's sound.inc

The idea is that Squirrel does not supply its own custom startup.asm for HuC anymore, because that means that it will break every time that HuC's startup.asm changes.

Instead, Squirrel (or any other sound driver) just defines some macros that get invoked inside startup.asm so that they can insert their own code into the initialization and IRQ handlers.

Yes the game is finished at 77%  :wink:
It was first developed for megadrive with BEX (a basic compiler), and ported directly to huc, this is why is in a so advanced state.

LOL,

this is awesome.

and, sorry we haven't really gotten around to releasing any new thing for Squirrel.   It still needs completely tested and such before we do anything, and, we aren't exactly drowning in copious amounts of freetime with the whole "cold as f*ck out" and "holy shit it's Christmas already?" crap on top of the other Aetherbytery.

Maybe after the new year.   Getting Inferno finished up sort of takes precedence over tweaking Squirrel since the new HuC is.. sort of in flux atm anyways, right?

OK then, I'll keep on giving out the modified version of the Squirrel Player that I made until you get around to finishing things off to your satisfaction.

I don't want to give people any reasons to delay or discourage a chance to try the new HuC ... the changes that Uli made are really impressive, and I recommend that people give it a try.

At this point, my current version of Uli's HuC build is pretty-much-done from my POV, except for any bugs that people report.

So I don't really see it as being "in-flux".

I don't want to keep on making changes to it ... I'd rather work on the zero-page-stack version.

And with the new macro-based interface between Squirrel and the HuC startup.asm, any continued improvements in HuC shouldn't affect Squirrel at all ... I hope.

The next set of problems will crop up if/when the zero-page-stack version of HuC appears and your Squirrel interface code doesn't preserve the X register ... but that's going to be a problem-to-solve with the System Card Player, too.

Will you be updating the graphics to suit the PC Engine as well? That would elevate the project beyond a simple port and really make a differece.

The movement is pretty decent for such a simple game, and the little touches really made it something special. I'm glad our little machine finally gets to experience it's awesomeness...

There was this... computer lab in my elementary school.

It had mostly Apple IIe's and a few C64's. There were also a few IIgs's that were highly coveted by the students who were obsessed with the Oregon Trail, and other games that were popular at the time. I seem to remember a "Conan" game where you threw a dagger like a boomerang.

Barbarian was one of these games where people would flock to a computer and watch two people battle it out. Sometimes on rainy days, "recess" would be held in the library and that game along with the Game Boy version of Duck Tales and Megaman ruled our free time.

That's why this game stands out to me; it was the digital verison of "King Of The Mountain" in the computer lab, circa 1989-1990.

select button will change the mode. you have demo> solo > vs mode
select the vs mode to train
try all directions with pad, you will have all the moves and defense of the game
the same thing with I button used will make all the attack moves

news ot the game:
while i'm waiting for the music of c64 and cpc versions (arkhan is doing a great job, soon finished :clap: ) , i have done two others version of barbarian :
AppleII and PC version of 1988, nammed death sword in usa
those two versions were easy to make because they have a little number of color and their sound are... basic  :P
clic on the pictures to download the game :

Just out of curiousity.  Are you building each version separately?

Part of the issue with Barbarian is the one tune is so friggin long, and has lots of data really.

The tempo is also weird, so it's just weird to line up in general.  So, optimizing it is kind of annoying as I didn't write the song.

If you're doing each song separately, this may not matter.   I can just provide each song as a separate file for each version you build.

Yes, I build each version separately
Each version has its small details, differences, strengths and weaknesses, but I would like to redo these 7 original versions of barbrian on pce
I would integrate your two music that you are doing in the c64 and cpc versions.
I realize the work that this represents and I thank you for it.
Without your help, I could not finish these two versions and it would be a shame
Good luck for the rest of work !

Oh.  That makes it easier, and I will care less about making the long battle song optimized for space :).

I will try to get it to you this week.  I got food poisoning or something over this weekend and did not do much.

hello
arkhan has done a nice work for the music theme of barbarian  :clap:
i hope integrate it this week, with the help of TOUKO.

for the moment, i have a problem with the function set_tile_data :

in the game i have a background (displayed with load_background )
this background has only 15 colors in one palette (created with incpal)
here is my problem :
i need to put some tiles on my background, but in a different palette
i do like this :
Code: [Select]
#incchr(logo,"GFX/decor/logo.pcx",26,4 )
#incpal(paletteLOGO,"GFX/decor/logo.pcx" )
set_bgpal( 2 , paletteLOGO );
set_tile_data(logo, 6, paletteLOGO );
load_tile(0x17f0);

and it doesn't works, it put tiles with my default background palette (0) !
i hope someone can help me !
 :pray:

I just woke up so this might be wrong/dumb/

I THINK you have to shift the palette reference when you use that function, by 4 bits, so it ends up setting the BAT up properly.

I remember set_tile_data being a little strange.    We actually use a utility that generates the BAT and is loaded and setup with all of the palettes immediately, without using any of those functions.

Hi F.L, you can test this :
Code: [Select]
#define PAL_TILE        #4

const char tile_pal_ref[6] = { PAL_TILE<<4,PAL_TILE<<4, PAL_TILE<<4,
                                           PAL_TILE<<4, PAL_TILE<<4, PAL_TILE<<4 };

main()
{
    set_tile_data(logo, 6, tile_pal_ref );
    load_tile(0x17f0);

}

Is this going in with your sample driver?   We never formally released the version of the utility that does the MML sound effects subtracking.  But, if you're using samples, this won't really help.

i dont know if it can help you TOUKO, but in the original games, you must choose between music or samples. i will do the same think for my remakes

@arkhan, whats is the name of the utility you mention  and where can i download it ?
thanks in advance

Arf damn, it's not related to my driver but by sample playback, and i'll want to know if you can disable a voice temporarily for playing a sample,and re-enable it when the sample playback is finished .

Yeah, using the internal Squirrel version that handles subtracks won't help as it doesn't support samples.

You could make sound effects with it, though, and use those in the game in lieu of samples.

Yeah, using the internal Squirrel version that handles subtracks won't help as it doesn't support samples.

I suspect that it just wasn't a concern for the System Card Player which was obviously written for use with the 64KB of RAM in the original CD interface, so you couldn't afford the memory to use samples-in-RAM, and had the ADPCM unit anyway.

I'd bet that the guy that wrote it had a sample-capable version available, it just wasn't needed for the System Card Player.

I'm confident that you guys have the skill to retrofit some sample support into the current player if you ever decide that you want to take the time/energy to do so.

Hi, cool to see barbarian on a CRT  :D
For music the driver is ok, i switched it from vblank to timer interrupt due to tempo problems,but i have a little problem to include more than 1 music (bank overflow) ,but i tested quickly .
For now i provided to F.L an easy way for switching between samples and music,because muting some mml channels to play samples is not so easy .

Yes sorry arkhan i was busy those days (with F.L's problems  :mrgreen:).
1st huc manage banks like shit,i had to play with the game's datas inclusion to make it working(and it works very well  :wink:)  ..
2nd we tried to include babarianC64 with the CPC version and like i said i my MP, we have some "label multiply defined" ,WAVE_TAB,Sawp,SAWP2,MODU_TAB,wiggle,MODU_IX,WAVE_BASE,TRACK_IX .

EDIT: It's fixed, but not tested if i can switch between the two music easily . :)
Title: Re: (work in progress) Barbarian on PCE
Post by: Arkhan on February 16, 2017, 09:14:11 PM
Oh, you can't just include them together.  Because they were created as two separate song files, they each contain the extra waves and vibrato table.   You can just put all that stuff once at the end, and include the song data.

You will likely run into this HuC/PCEAS problem where if a pattern hops banks, it drops off and dies.   I will fix that now and send a new version for you so the CPC song doesn't lose bass near the end of the tune.

It seems this problem only exists if PATTERNS skip banks.   If the actual channel data hops banks  (which patterns to play, etc.), it doesn't goober out.

To fix it, I basically just cheated and put dummy data where the break was occurring to push the pattern that was breaking into bank 2, so the pattern that breaks now is a big block of rests that mean nothing and are never actually used.

padding!

Check your PM.  I sent the updated MML file for you.

I saw that, and the fact that it's better to include the songs(each song in a bank) at the first user's bank, AKA 4 and after the GFX datas and code .

This but only the games that feature egg hatching and pouring chocolate into lethal floor acid.

Which?  A lot of Konami games are actually MSX1 games.

We already got Snatcher on PCE. and Twinbee, Gradius 1 and 2, and Salamander.

Metal Gear 1 and 2 could be done on PCE.  and Contra, but the MSX Contra wouldn't be that fantastic on PCE.

Just imagine NES Contra on PCE, but with better graphics and music...

I've always imagined the Famicom version(for the extra animation), but with the arcade Contra's graphics on the Turbob.  IIRC, either Black Tiger or Keranu did some sprite ripping & color adjusting as a test.

hmmm apart from the ones you mentioned maybe these although they are msx1 mostly

space mambow
treasure of usas
maze of galious
knightmare
king kong 2

also would anyone love to port the arcade mr do! to pc engine ?

Pining for Contra on PCE is a habit for far too many of us. But since this is about Barbarian on PCE, maybe this thread isn't the best place for that.

These fantastic Barbarian ports are a joy to watch.

You mean imagine Contra 3 ?  lol.

The MSX Contra is a completely different game.   It doesn't even scroll, has a life bar, and is kind of easy because the lack of scrolling makes the action way too easy to manage.

It's fun still, but the NES one was better.

The other MSX Konami games are barely worth bothering.  We've already got Salamander.   So, doing Manbow or anything like it is whatever.

Maze of Galious and Knightmare would be cool to see though.   But really, Knightmare is just another vertical shooter.  We don't need another.

Treasure of Usas or King Kong?  Good ideas.

Or the Goonies game.

Contra in general is a gaping hole in the PCE's library. PCE needs run n' guns.
Title: Re: Barbarian on PCE
Post by: Arkhan on April 19, 2017, 10:51:12 AM
What's interesting to me is that there's only really two run and guns that anyone talks about.

Gunstar Heroes, and Contra.    So, it is kind of comical that it's such a hot, desired genre.

What other badass run n guns are there?   I can't really think of one but there has to be.

I never really considered EWJ to be a run and gun I guess, since the pacing is strange at times and there's alot of goobery platforming and the whippy thing.   That game is odd as f*ck.

I excluded Metal Slug in my thought process since I was thinking in terms of 8/16 bit console stuff.

I would honestly rather see EWJ on PCE than Contra, though.   Even though it's probably a more difficult feat and would definitely suffer visually.

I guess Mega Man counts as a run and gun too, but I always just kind of put MM in it's own entire genre.

Seriously, original, new run n gun or GTFO. Contra on NES already exists and plays just fine.

Jackyl.  Bonknuts brought that to the Turbob(along with Contra IIRC).  I thought about making a cd soundtrack for it, hopefully someday.  Was also hoping me doing that would inspire someone to work with putting the arcade gfx into it.

That's not a run and gun.  It's like a walk and hop and gun sometimes.   It's a fantastic game, but not what I think of for Run n Gun

Neither is Jackal.

I guess my definition of run n gun may be way too literal.

Narc is a good run 'n gun.   If there was that but scrolled a little faster, that would rule.

Or Alien Soldier, maybe.

Some of those games have too much variety/depth to the way they play for me to think they're a run n' gun.

Unless maybe someone built the 2 NGPC Metal Slugs on the Turbob.  Surely those can be done, & made to look better!  I do recall some paralax, can't recall how extensive it was though.

Or, someone could rebuild Dirty Larry for Lynx, & improve it & make it a run n' gun/brawler hybrid!

So, are you doing separate carts for every version, or are you bundling all the versions together and letting people choose which to play?

Now that you've acquired sufficient skill with the PC Engine, will you be doing any more ports of old PC games, or even new, original content?

This is a magnificent dream.

Even a one stage demo of a “MetalGrafx” Run-n-gun would be marvelous.

A pcefx member here has *completely original* art assets for PC GUNJIN (title of cancelled project) that are *begging* to be reincarnated in a new demo/project.

Seriously.

I clicked on the link above (twice!), but I did not receive a single email confirming that the package (Le Barbie HuCARD) had been shipped to New Jersey, USA.

Please confirm tracking number.

Thank you.
