OK, so I can get the 5 keys and reach Gomez, but he always destroys me. I can't even figure out how to hurt him or otherwise what to do with him. Also, does turning into a monster do anything for your?
Thanks for what help you can give.

I haven't played this game in years, but isn't there something you can do with those pull cords that were in the movie? I think that they're at the upper left corner of the screen.
-
I looked and didn't see anything like pull cords. I guess I'm just stuck. Blah...
-
Isn't Gomez the one you have to sword fight with?
-
The only winning move is not to play.
-
I just played through to Gomez twice, mapped out the entire mansion, revisited everyone/thing... but still couldn't figure out a way to beat him. I think that you're supposed to pick up a sword somewhere to duel with him. Maybe it's in the room before you actually fight him where he leaves you a heart?
The werewolf power up just gives you a second full bar of health.
Anyways, the final battle is in the room with those chains and thing is there too.
-
Do you meet Gomez more than once? The game can't be so short that it's just the keys and Gomez. Since you say there are chains and stuff when you fight him there must be a time you go at him again.
-
So you have to find the sword in order to beat Gomez. It's in one of the rooms that has the ghosts flying around, all the way to the left IIRC. Although it's been a long time since I've played through so that might not be completely accurate, but that's what I remember.
Anyway, once you have the sword and you reach Gomez you press SELECT to switch from your umbrella weapon to the sword and then fight him.
-
Ah, I tended to ignore the ghost rooms because they never held anything. How about that chest in the one room? Where you get the heart and the umbrella upgrade. What role does the chest play?
-
I've never figured out how to open that chest, so obviously it's not anything necessary to complete the game.
-
Thanks, the sword did the trick. I'm now in a new area that I'm slowly exploring.
-
I've never figured out how to open that chest, so obviously it's not anything necessary to complete the game.
It also disappears after you visit the room the first time, so if it was necessary, the game would be (fully) broken.
