Title: Out Run: PCE vs Genesis
Post by: Spector on July 01, 2009, 12:43:14 AM
I'm enjoying playing Out Run on the PC Engine. A decent frame rate, highly accurate graphics and reasonable sound make it a winner (the echo-laden high score theme is especially well done). I only played the Genesis version once many years ago and it looked good too. But which one is better?

in generally and gamefun/play wise the pce port is better. but some areas in the md port are done better as well e.g. the splitting of the street, the beach in level one, which was forgotten in the pce version..

ASIDE: The tunes are sweet... does someone want to make mp3's of the arcade/pce/md renditions so I (we) can compare them (and just enjoy listening to them)?

Yeah I'd love to hear mp3's of the Arcade themes in perticular, as they were boss.

Well, that's awesome. I checked your page here (http://www.superpcenginegrafx.com/music.html) and didn't see it listed. Wanna share?

I just converted these and uploaded them on my way out the door, so they're likely unedited-

You rock! The first track (fm1) is aurally challenged (right channel only, weak sound), but fm2 was nice and robust (deep bass), high-score sounds good (but right-channel only).

Regardless, I've been listening to these over and over. Now get back home and fix this up! :)

PS - I love all of the stuff you put in the "MUSIC" section of your site. The Mark III stuff in particular has been on heavy rotation for the last 24 hours.

The mp3's sound the same as the wav files and my Sega brand Master System (I have a couple Gam*boys, but don't record from them). It might sound different coming out of your computer speakers instead of a TV.

Thanks, I've got a ton of random Mark III fm tracks from various games recorded, but am not sure how to post them yet.

Ahh, OutRun and AfterBurner II on the PC-Engine....

I have always prefered the PC-Engine versions of these games, over the MegaDrive-Genesis versions.

Even if (or assuming) the MD-Gen versions are technically superior in some or most areas, I feel that the PCE versions were made to "seem" more like the arcade versions.  They're also more colorful.

I like the way the road in OutRun and the airstrip in AfterBurner II "scales" (software scaling) on the PC-Engine. Even though they are nowhere near the Super-Scaler powered arcade versions, they're pretty damn sweet on PCE.

Imagine if OutRun had been released for the SuperGrafx (it was listed as TBA in magazine ads)...  Even more wild, imagine if the SuperGrafx had been a more powerful machine with true hardware sprite scaling like the MegaCD.  I'm sure Sega would've allowed ports of their games to it, since they did to the PCE and other non-Sega systems.
