The subject says it all. Which PCE games are truly the most rare and/or expensive and why? Is it because few were made, because the game is awesome, or simply the result of some crazy market quirk? Which of these are truly worth owning (in general vs at current "market" prices)?
-
I'd say renny blaster or dead of brain 1&2......
-
What about that... Sylphia?

Sylphia can be obscure though i don't know if it's that rare unless some, body here knows how many copies were made of the game.
Though it's highly value lately and i've heard it reaching the $300.00 price point for a mint copy.

The aforementioned titles aren't really all that rare or expensive, not when compared to promotional titles like Darius Alpha and Power League All Star Gold, unofficial titles like Crazy Hospital, or limited release titles like Akiyama Jin and Active Life Network. Are any of these worth owning? Maybe, if you're fabulously rich uncle just passed and left half of his fortune to the local cat shelter and the other half to you; otherwise, I think not.
What's Bazaru De Gozaru worth nowadays? I wouldn't mind a copy of that, though I'm afraid I'd have to battle Tats to the death before he'd let a copy escape his clutches. :D
-
From what I've seen an played, nothing that is more expensive than Sapphire is worth owning except maybe Bazaru De Gozaru (possibly its more expensive than Sapphire these days?)
Games like Darius Alpha, Renny Blaster, Dead of the Brain...they aren't worth two shits. I could have easily had copies of Renny Blaster of DotB for well under $100 back in the day (Renny Blaster, for less than $30, I'm sure) but passed since they are garbage. Darius Alpha in another matter since it really is rare, but IIRC its just a boss rush mode-only version of the CD game (which already has a boss rush mode in it available via code).
The PC Engine, like the Saturn, sort of has a reputation for being a high roller's system. Truly though the vast majority of all the really cool shit on both systems is less than $50 (much of it less than $20) with only a few expensive games actually being really good (Drac X, Sapphire).

We have a pinned listing in the TG16 section about "appropriate" or expected game prices. Why don't we have one here in the PCE area?

Good idea. You should take on that project.

LOLs :D ...it varies quite a bit between US180 (w/o spine) up to US300 (minty cib).
and as you mentioned, the real hard stuff is quite above sapphire & co. for example, i'm trying to find a pc genjin 3 taikenban huey since quite few years now without avail. the power league gold is much more common (at least 4 shops in tokyo have one for sell). then there are is that super real mah jong PIV custom special which is limited to only 15 pcs. go figure

Common sense prevailed. Take a look at the Turbo price list - it hasn't been updated in forever and is therefor useless. It'd be even more difficult (nigh impossible) to keep an accurate list current for the PCE's far larger library, some titles of which are rather obscure and not often sold outside of Japan.

Darn it I was bidding for Sapphire a couple of weeks ago, but it went for a crazy price (around $400). Then another came on, I watched it but totally forgot about it, and it went for $100 no kidding. And it was factory sealed. Maybe it was one of those knock-offs though?

Yeh the sealed one on ebay recently that ended for around $100 was one of the bootleg copies, was a bit naughty as the seller didn't mention it was a fake in the listiing, but in the picture you could see it was a fake.
:D :D

Unless you really know what you are looking for, and the photos are damn good, its basically impossible for an average guy to tell the difference between the real one and a fake. Unless I was dealing with an established seller (Hit Japan, 16-bit, Rising Stuff, etc) I wouldn't buy Sapphire from eBay. Even the seller might not be able to tell its fake (or at least that's what he might say).
-
that's the advantage of a selaed sapphire. you will see it immediately if it is a counterfeit or original one, since the seald stripe is placed way to high to regular sealed copies. anyway, any sealed sapphires are suspicious in the first place.

You know... it could be an original that has been re-shrinkwrapped. Yes!

Somewhere here I have the promo bag for Bazaru De Gozaru I think. Should really get around to taking pics of the oddball stuff...

The TV Show is one of those fairly rare games. I never see any for sale on ebay. There was one that was $199 but that was because it was Mad Gear. Someone bought it though or he failed to re-list it. The only place I ever see it is on yahoo japan or online Japanese game shops. Even on there they are expensive. Yahoo Japan seems kind of like ebay for overpriced games. There's two on Amazon.jp for sale for a nice ass raping :-& http://www.amazon.co.jp/THE-TV-SHOW-%E3%80%90PC%E3%82%A8%E3%83%B3%E3%82%B8%E3%83%B3%E3%80%91/dp/B0000ZPVJU (http://www.amazon.co.jp/THE-TV-SHOW-ã€PCエンジン】/dp/B0000ZPVJU).

lol, hilarious!!! usually i could get one for between 150~200 bucks.
-
I thought you would've had one by now. I know you've talked about wanting one in the past. That was quite a while ago. Guess there's other games you'd rather have first. I still find amazon.co.jp and yahoo.jp auction to be the US versions of ebay. There's plenty of gouging going on at those sites.
-
lol..yeah..but when i had the ca$h i couldn't find a pristine one :( so i bought sum other stuff in exchange. but if i see the right offer, it's just bought it in no time!!
remember, i good collector is patient :)

Yes...good things come to those who wait. Unless they wait too long and then they miss out.

I agree with Tatsujin. Most PCE games are 15-20 years old, and almost all of them are cheaper now than they were when released. Its obvious you can wait a looooong time.

I have TV Show for sale for $150 if anyone wants it.

I bought that one. He eventually dropped to $150 and with the spine and not faded it was worth it to me at that point.

Tats - what's the street rate of these at Japan? I haven't seen one ever in stores. Picked this one up at Yahoo Auctions..
