Title: Question on PCE versions of games versus US versions
Post by: jeffg on June 17, 2010, 02:15:40 PM
I am interested in getting Air Zonk, Bonk 3, and Terraforming.

Out of those do they all play the same US vs PCE version and would i be missing out on much if I go the cheap route and get the PCE versions?

Bonk 3 aka PC Genjin 3 is Hucard only (in japan). except the case you have an adaptor, it won't work on a US System.

the other two won't give you any troubles. in contrary, going the (cheap) japanese CD-shumps way can be only WIN.

Terraforming is identical between regions. Air Zonk (PC Denjin) and Bonk 3 (PC Genjin 3) are practically identical for all intents and purposes, save for the graphical behavior of Bonk/Zonk when "powered up."

And you'll need a region adapter for PC Denjin to work on a US system as well as for PC Genjin 3. Terraforming is a CD game and doesn't have region lockout.

cool, i snagged a pc engine duo-r for my cd playing anyways, so i am covered there.

That sounds great, i will just save a bunch of cash then and go JP way

What other PCE shmups do you guys recommend, and what English friendly PCE games are good?

Parodious Da! (Hu-Card)
Spriggan (CD-ROM2)
Download (Hu-Card)
Dracula X (Super CD-ROM2) *expensive* You might be familiar with this one by now
Salamander a.k.a Life Force (Hu-Card)

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

EDIT: Stuck Drac X in there just for the hell of it.

Image Fight will quite possibly give you the most bang for the buck of any game in the whole library. Image Fight 2 is awesome as well, but a little more expensive. Well worth it if you like the first.

Ah, Star Parodier. I just got that one today. :D IMHO it's not as good as say Spriggan, but it's a great shootie.

EDIT- @ Rag-time4  Is Image Fight that good? Explain please.

Yes, it really is that good. You get a game that's as fun as just about any $50+ game for 10-20 bucks.

It's got some absolutely killer bosses, and it's a really hard game overall. The thing is though that you get so much play control with the red pods that there is a perfect balance to the difficulty. I never felt like it was difficult in a cheap way. When I got my butt kicked a few times in a row I would always get a feeling that I could get better and rarely felt frustrated.

Here are a couple reviews:

By the way, there is a high-resolution-mode code for Image Fight (it's an Irem game!), and there is also a code that lets you play as Mr. Heli - who is the star of another cool Irem game!

EDIT~ Another interesting tidbit, which is what really got me interested in the game, is that according to the producer of Radiant Silvergun, Image Fight was a key design inspration. (wikipedia link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiant_Silvergun)) I think that to have that status, especially for a game as highly regarded as Radiant Silvergun, any inspirational game would have to be a special one.

Oh yeah, we were discussing that in the newly bumped thread.

Image Fight the inspiration for Radient Silvergun? Didn't see that coming...

if you can call yourself an owner of either a Playstation or Saturn, you have to get Image Fight on one those systems as well. Otherwise, the pce would do just fine :)

Are there any major diffs? If not I would rather have the PCE version just because I am an NEC nut. ;)

SS/PSX Image Fight is 100% arcade accurate (sort of). the PCE one is quite down-trimmed, compared. It's not like R-Type, of which the PCE one is almost looking like its arcade pendant.

and in additional, you will get a 2nd game on the disc -> X-Multipy. which is IMO, one of the weirdest, strangest & coolest shooter together, Irem ever did. check Yu0tube for vids. The music is awesome as well :)

Really?!? I didn't even know there was an arcade version. Japanese only maybe?

Man, this might be a difficult choice. Are the 32-Bit versions import only? If so I know where I can get one of those "import discs" for my PSX locally for about $15.

Yes, the 32-Bit versions are import only, and the playstation version is pretty expensive.

Also yes, the arcade version was Japan only.

Personally I haven't tried the playstation or saturn versions, but I know for a fact that the PCE version gives you the benefit of selectable difficulty level.

You might be able to find a complete copy of Image Fight for the same price as the "import disc" you would need to load the playstation version.

I'm not sure about the Image Fight Arcade, could be oversea released. Image Fight Console = NTSC-J only

On second thought, I'm not 100% sure if Image Fight arcade was released in the U.S., but I don't think it was. The NES version is the only U.S. version that I think we got. (lame version, btw)

Image Fight II is a beast! and penalty stage on the original Image Fight is brutal.

How would you compare the penalty zone in Image Fight I to the penalty zone in Image Fight II?
