I've recently started to become really interested in PCE shooters. I've got Salamander, Gradius, and Air Zonk (which I'm wanting to trade for the PCE version) right now, with Super Star Soldier on the way. I've been going through emulators and trying new games and found I really like the Soldier series of games. I plan on buying Final Soldier soon, too. I am wondering, however, why Soldier Blade is so much more expensive than the rest of the games related to it. Is it just an uncommon game? Also, I'm open to suggestions for other shooters to look for.
-
I can't explain the price difference, but highly recommend Download as a great 'cheap' shooter.
-
In the US, Soldier Blade was one of the later releases, and might therefore be a little bit more rare. It's also very highly regarded.
Beigemore, have you tried Image Fight yet??
-
Spriggan!!!! :D
-
Gate of Thunder
Winds of Thunder
Seirei Senshi Spriggan
Nexzr
Star Parodia
R-Type
Super Star Soldier
Solderi Blade
Image Fight 2
Sylphia
Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire
-
Nope, haven't tried Image Fight. I do have R-Type for TG16, but need the PCE one now since that's the only system I have. Star Parodia looks pretty awesome. I'll check all the recommendations. Thanks everyone.

Can't argue with a list like that. OBEY NEXZR!
As for Soldier Blade, like rags said the US release was a later release and it's a popular favourite, and for good reason.
-
Soldier Blade is a bit spendy because it's frickin' awesome! Easily the bestest HuCard shmup.
As for other shootie suggestions, add Dead Moon to Tatsu's list and you're good to go. Note that the last two titles, while quite good are also quite expensive.
-
Dont forget Raisin Bar II! (Rayxanber II)
-
Gunhead maybe? :-"
-
What no Aldynes?!
Who cares if you need a supergrafx, the games legit as f*ck. :)
Also, Cotton.
and if you're a pervert like me, Steam Hearts sho' is good.
-
I agree with Cotton and Dead Moon, both underrated in my opinion. Both blow away more popular shooters like Raiden and Blazing Lazers to me. Also, Soldier Blade IS the best Hucard Shooter.......
-
I agree with everyone's suggestions so far and I would add these:
Aero Blasters
Parodius Da
Cybercore (or Psychic Storm if you have CD option)
Detana Twinbee
Hana Taka Daka
Coryoon
Toy Shop Boys
Lost Sunheart
Cho Aniki and Ai Cho Aniki
Psycho Chaser
W Rings
and not officially a shooter, but also:
Bloody Wolf
-

In my opinion Soldier Blade is the best Hucard shooter and the second best shooter on the PC-Engine after Winds of Thunder.
Saying that Super Star Soldier and Final Soldier are both great too but Soldier Blade is the best. :D
-
I don't think soldier blade is the best from a pure shooting perspective, but it sure does look fantastic.
I would also submit Metamor Jupiter! Fantastic music and some crazy effects that I didn't really think the PCE could do.
-
I have never heard of Metamor Jupiter. Sounds interesting.

One of a select few games designed with the PC-Engine virtual cushion in mind!
-
...The other being Tokimeki Memorial :D [rimshot]
Edit: By the way, I re-uploaded my review of Metamor Jupiter: http://www.disgruntleddesigner.com/chrisc/MetamorReview/

Soldier Blade is overrated, in my humble opinion. Good game, but Final Soldier is better. Why is the game overpriced? The same reason 90% of the rest of the American games are overpriced..... SB arguably has the best graphics of the series, but the weapon selection is a bit bland compared to FS and for the fourth game in a series, it really offers nothing new in the gameplay department.
I'd give it a rank of "solid," but I can't agree with others that it is the "best HuCard shooter." There are plenty of better cart-based shooters in the American library, and if we're counting the JP library as well, it probably wouldn't even make the top 5.
-
Good game, but Final Soldier is better.
Glad I'm not alone.

I agree also.

I enjoyed Super Star Soldier more than I enjoyed Final Soldier. I found Final Soldier too easy.

I can't even make it passed the third level in Super Star Soldier. :( I guess I need to practice more.
-
This Final Soldier vs. Soldier Blade is all fine and good, but Nexzr beats 'em both. :P
-
While not as flashy as the soldier series, I would like to also add:
Twin Cobra and Macross 2036!
and although i haven't played it, why is the much hyped Magical Chase not mentioned???

cause were talking about games we can all actually obtain and play. :) hah.
-
Jus saw this thread, luv me some shooters...
Blazing Lazers (Gunhead) was the 1st shooter I played, and I highly recommend it.
Soldier Blade is very good, excellent caravan stages.
I also like Image Fight, been battling this one for the past week.
Honorable mentions:
Lost Sunheart
Lords
Gate
Aero Blasters
Final Soldier
Super Star Soldier
R-type
Rabio Lepus
Metal Stoker (not typical shooter, but still fun)

You're really gettin' me hungry for some Twin Cobra!
Macross 2036 cannot be underestimated, either. Such a fun shootie. Graphics are top notch and the boss battles rule.
-
Hell yeah I love me some Twin Cobra.
-

Honestly, what's the point of having more weapons to choose from if most of them are utter crap? Soldier Blade's weaponry is more classic but more balanced I think. Anyway, all 3 Soldiers + Gunhed are great.
-
I still need to pick up SB and FS. I LOVE Blazing Lazers! But, I was a little disappointed in Super Star Soldier. Blazing Lazers' music is tons better than SSS's IMHO. Blazing Lazers' music is so good that it invokes a warm since of nostalgia in me even though I didn't have a Turbografx when I was young.
Bucci's Turbo Views intro music does the same thing to me. :)
-

Hahah, fullfill thy craving!
Just found out recently Twin Cobra actually is a sequel of the ol' shooter Tiger Heli (which i thought was pretty lame on the NES compared to 1943) hence the japanese name Kyukyoku Tiger  Thankfully TC blows away TH, there was also a TC2 but was only released on Saturn :(

yeah I like final solider better than sss. give that a try

I've been holding off on getting SSS for a while because of the lackluster reviews here. I do remember playing it bitd, but I think that was just an overnight rental or at Radio Shack. From what people are saying about FS I'll be picking that up before SSS, in any case.

SSS isn't a throwaway shooter by any means. It's just a little lackluster, and the difficulty is unforgiving IMO. Not as bad as Raiden though.

personally I think Super Star Soldier is excellent, its got a great difficulty curve to it.
I also really like Final Soldier the only problem its just too easy.
-
I agree that SSS is excellent.... if it didnt have Soldier in it's title it probably wouldnt be hammered like it is.... I feel the same about Super Air Zonk.... had it been called Deep Blue 2, wouldn't it be given the "Most Improved" award?
I do like them both, but they dont live up to their family, that's all.
-
Blazing Lazers music was great. Title track is very well done.
Same with SSS. Good tunes all around in that game.
I do sometimes base a game off the music above everything else -_- lol

You and I are alike in that respect, Ark.

the order of truth:
SSS = SB >> FS
GH is not part of the serie.
true story! close topic!
-
GH is not part of the serie.
yes,
the correct equation:
GunHed = compile
SSS + FS + SB = Hudson Soft
GunHed + SSS + FS + SB = error = Fail
:D
-
sss may possible had nexzr as it's true sucessor, sb is more side story/gaiden from soldier series
just look at the similarity, more for the former, than later
interstate/kaneko are both the developers of these games
-
Kaneko/Inter State = Aero Blasters + Nexzr
Aero Blasters + Nexzr = Winz
-
Aero Blasters + Mathius + Clear Attempt = Fail :(
-
Compile makes some kickass shooters. Aleste 2 was awesome

Compile made gamers' games. They will always rule in my book. RIP Compile. :(
-
Kaneko/Inter State = Aero Blasters + Nexzr
Aero Blasters + Nexzr = Winz
Kaneko/Interstate=Aero Blasters + Nexzr + Super Star Soldier + Star Parodia
Kaneko/Interstate never fails. Kaneko/Interstate rules.

Hahahah, practice my friend, practice. That game was tough when it went into highspeed mode though...

I have a similar view. I found the graphics, difficulty, and weaponry in Final Soldier disappointing, especially compared to SSS.
The graphics in FS do not seem to have the same sharpness and clarity to them. I cleared it on my first real sit down with it. The weapons, particularly the flame weapon, weren't as cool (aesthetically pleasing) as SSS. The unorthodox flame weapon in SSS was a blast to use, especially when combined with a sweeping flight pattern to take advantage of the flame's movement pattern. It was nerfed in FS. If I remember correctly there is one power level where the flame always shoots straight ahead (lame), and at higher levels it moves too fast to be fun to use.
-
Honestly, Final Soldier looks like it was given to an art team of Hudson beginners as a practice project. Compared to SSS (Kaneko, I know) and even other Hudson projects, FS has a surfeit of pillow shading and bland designs.

I have to agree. I picked up Final Soldier for Jboy during the Secret Santa of 2008 and I popped it in when it arrived at my place. My first impression of the graphics was that it was bland. I didn't play enough of it to get a real good idea of how the gameplay was, but it seemed pretty standard to other Hudson shooties.
-
chris is so right!
-
There is only one stage in FS I would consider "bland," but that's just me.
