I had a request to make a manual insert for a member and so i did and then i did a few more :) the results are what you see below...
They are copied off my originals, printed on a very nice stock, and printed on the inside from the manual are the basic controls of the game and a disclaimer (Not official, only a copy 2010)
So the question is what do you think of me selling some of these here and only here? dont want the ebay F@cks to get them but for the people here it maybe a nice option for the shelf
I did a poll if this is a good idea or bad idea as the community will rule.
so let me know, i will restrict who i sell to or not at all
Also price point will be $2.50 to $3 each to cover the cost at my printers,
love to hear some feedback, good or bad.
Thanks guys

I have no need for them personally but I'm sure there are a ton of people here who can. They look pretty nice, nice job. I voted yes.
-
Voted yes sparky and i dont see why not either at all.Fans for the neo-geo mvs make there own insert for "the shockboxes" and some look better then the official ones.
-
I think they're a great idea. If anything it might counter some of the high prices resulting from some the ebay gougery. Some of us just like to have nice looking games sitting in our book cases, but dont want to pay the high price of some complete games.
-
I don't give a crap one way or another. Personally, I have no desire for things that look official but aren't (ie: repro spine stickers, GoT back inserts) but, hey, whatever floats people's boats.
Its going to be kind of annoying in a couple of years though when, like Kisados and Girls of Hawaii, they end up selling on eBay for way way more than they could ever possibly ever be worth to a sane person.
-
Lol, very nice. I also like the THIS IS ONLY A COPY thing. Chapeau :)
-
I would love to get my hands on a couple of those scanned manuals, especially certain TTI released games. I feel too ashamed to display some of these games that I am missing manuals for on my bookshelf since I like getting games that are complete. But I don't want to pay silly prices on evilbay. It's a great idea sparky, and the manual scans look top notch. :)
-
Yessireebob! :)
-
These are outstanding Sparks. I will be in line to buy a Soldier Blade and Bomberman manual!
-
Interested
-
I have a bunch of loose hucards and could use instructions on gameplay. I could use a few.
-
Awesome!
-
I think it's a great idea, but I'd go one step further and reproduce 'em in their entirety. They're clearly marked as reproductions, so I doubt they'll ever be worth stupid money on ebay; sure some clown will try to sell 'em for big bucks, but we all need a good laugh now and then anyway.
In any case, sign me up for a copy of Bonk 3 to hide my kinda wrinkly copy.
-
I totally agree with Necro. I'd love to flip through the other pages to admire the artwork, story, etc.
-
jawesome- they look great!!
-
Looks great, when do you start printing?
-
Some replacement tray liners would be cool too; at least for Gate of Thunder and the pack-in version of Ys Book I & II.
-
Looks awesome. Good alternative for some of the hard to find manuals.
-

Seconded. I don't think anyone else here is doing these anymore.
-
Mathius, if you go to page one of this thread: https://www.pcenginefx.com/forums/index.php?topic=8772.0 , Necromancer posted a very well made tray liner with a back insert for Gate of Thunder that Joe made. All you have to do is resize the image and print it out using Microsoft Word and or Microsoft Paint.

I don't even have to use the link. I know of Joe's work of "art," and I suggested that it be in the Smithsonian a while back.
-
Well good to hear guys, and tanks!!!
Rest assure if you like the quality of the spine stickers well you will love these, i hate copies that look like copies , these look legit.
I am going to keep them as only a 2 pager for the inside to keep cost down and less chance of f*ckery with them, in some cases the story is on 1 side and the controls are on the other.
I will only make a few of these inserts for the more rare and so called hard to find games that fetch bull shit prices...
A nice fill in if your missing them.
PS: It was vestcoat i believe that did the Gate of Thunder inlay, i printed it out and it looks f@cking great.
EDIT: Looked back i am wrong... looks like it was Joey... sorry man
-
yea, I'm gonna need a GoT and a Legendary Axe insert once you get them rolling.
-
wont be doing the common stuff like Led Axe & the not so hard to find... i will be looking at some of the titles from the 21 games that did not come with cases only cardboard boxes.
-
Agree with Necro also,.Would be great for games like Magical Chase, Dynastic Hero, Super Zonk etc for guys that buy the JPN version but want an English manual. I'll buy some if you make um.
-
but want an English manual.
They are not manuals.
-
i think these look great, could you make the disclaimer bigger :).. perhaps watermark the back cover, can see these getting out there and people photo shoping off the bottom corner, a water mark on the back cover would make that hard to cover. Now who is going to make repo boxes ;)
-

I was thinking to suggest something similar. Great idea!
-
i think its awesome I back it 100% its a great thing for the community. as of now i need 6. I dont care if they are not real. its better than just having a huey even tough they are not real and are clearly written. It just gives the game a sense of completion
-
Like it or not Sparky, the more you make/sell, the better the chances of them eventually making their way to ebay. More likely than not, the person buying it then won't even be aware that its a copy and will get screwed.
I did not vote, because you're Canadian and will do what you want.
-
maybe put a white band across the front that says copy.
-
I am not really feelin' the idea of watermarks, but I can see what you guys are saying with regards to possible ebay trolls. But if one were to be implemented it should be in the back, not in the front. The main allure of the manual insert is the nice cover art.
-

yeah i take that back it would suck
-
I did say Back cover in my suggestion , just to avoid the fronts being "spoilt" :)
-
I don't know what happened to the message I posted earlier, but....
I think the "This is a copy 2010" deal at the bottom of the page is sufficient. These look really nice. Whenever I buy a game that doesn't come with a manual or cover, I usually print one out from the super-low res scans over at PCECP. This would be a fantastic alternative. I have a handful of games I'd buy these for.
-
thanks guys all great points but i dont think a water mark is needed, making the disclaimer bigger sure but remember this is like a 2 page cheat sheet, kinda like what blockbuster and some game stores did back in the day for snes & genny rentals... They put this sheet in the rental box for game controls and a bit of the story <<shrugs>>
How about under 20 posts here and i dont sell? or leave it to my discresion as members with rep i will sell to, not looking to get rich off of selling $3 manuals  its something i did for a member and they turned out great so cover my cost and shipping and only the good guys get them :) simple as that.
-
well for the right price id take one of each :) great idea and didnt realise at first they were cut down versions :) thought you were considering a full manual reprint.
-
20 posts might be kinda low, Sparky. We have plenty of people who just post to sell their wears that have more than 20 posts. How about 50 posts, and then only if they are seen in the discussion forums enough to be recognized?
-
I agree with Mathius. I think 50 is a nice round number to weed out any duds.
-
I suppose you could restrict it to teh fackler ebay members... not sure what everyone would think of that though.
-
I made a YS I & II tray liner a long time ago...and a manual cover and insert for Street Fighter I:
https://www.pcenginefx.com/forums/index.php?topic=6048.0
(http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/5360/finalnov6ysscancopykr0.th.jpg) (http://img223.imageshack.us/i/finalnov6ysscancopykr0.jpg/)
Uploaded with ImageShack.us (http://imageshack.us/)
Someone also made a Gates of Thunder insert that I have in mine, looks pretty nice.
Some replacement tray liners would be cool too; at least for Gate of Thunder and the pack-in version of Ys Book I & II.
-
Those look great, Sparks. I'd definitely snag some of those up. :)
-
Thanks again guys looks like everyone is liking this idea so far, so ok post count of 50 sounds good and i will use my discretion as well.
Also having them ONLY for the F-ebay crew will only bring people to da club just to get them, and the club does not want that. Anyway no worries they will only be available here on pcenginefx.com and only here.
I will make a list of the ones i will be doing and everyone's thoughts on the choices.
<<huggles>>

The more I think about this, the more I see that I do have a big problem with the idea of making bootleg manuals. How many people have been burned by overpaying for Sapphire boots? This is what will eventually happen, no matter how good the intentions are.
Putting a disclaimer on the back of the manual isn't going to protect a buyer that only sees a picture of the front. Are you guys really going to expect every seller to now provide front and back scans of every manual? What about scans of every page? Seriously.
I can relate to wanting complete stuff, but there's got to be a line! If you're going to offer an alternative, it should be that - not a bootleg. I think you could just as easy make a retro cover (maybe with a small 1/8" border) around the image (you could use the color associated with the game type even.) Problem solved.
Sparky, I really hope you think this cover thing through. It's no different than someone getting bootleg boxes made. It will happen. How will you react to that when it does?
This time - I voted. NO, not they way you show them!
-
A good seller discloses a repro cover. A bad one sells it like original and gets striked on ebay and bad feedback.
-
Anybody in possesion of these will know that they are not the real thing. Watermarked pages or special borders aren't necessary. The disclaimer at the bottom should suffice, not to mention the lack of pages within. The seller assumes full responsibilty for the listing of the game regardless whether or not they accept returns.. All a buyer has to do is ask the seller before buying if it's the original manual. Besides, Sparky won't be selling these to everybody. He will use discretion to choose who to sell too. Ponying up $$$ on ebay just to get the original manual is flat out ridiculous for a couple of games, particularly Magical Chase.
-
So when you sell your copy 2 years from now to someone and let them know that it's a copied manual, how the hell does sparky control who YOU sell it to. It WILL happen, no matter what you say...Even if Sparky numbers every manual and keeps track of who he sells it to.
I'm not saying that anyone who buys directly from Sparky will screw somebody - you guys probably wont. But if Sparky thinks that everyone who buys one of his manuals will never sell to someone else, I think he's wrong. It's that 2nd or 3rd tier buyer that Sparky has no control over even if the copies are numbered.
In my eyes, what you're proposing is a bootleg, plain and simple. Sparky, if you decide to sell these, I would like to get a copy of every manual you produce so I can document what is a boot and what is legit, though I would really rather not have to do it.
-
do it do it do iti would sure but alot of loosies anstead of shelling out mad cash for a complete game. The thing is Im a gamer. Im not collecting shit in hopes to make a profit. I do think it nice to have a manual though. I think cover art is important on pce games. tg16 I dont really care. I vote to take our a corner and write copy in it. If you guys are are really about the game buy one with the real manual. if ya wanna be a cheap bastard like me buy a loosie and a manual that says copy on the cover or whatever is not my call. I due understand about them being sold on ebay but yeah it is the sellers responsability and as a buyer you can always ask a question. Know who u are buying from. there is risk in everything. You dont think that someone out there right now has a fake manual in their collection and not know it. Im sure of it. please its a huge selling point of a game.
dude if its not even a complete manual(which i think is kinda lame. I wouldnt even puut anything on the front.
-

I think you're really overthinking the matter. The eBay feedback system will weed out any sellers who try to pass these off as "real." Yeah they might look like the real deal from the cover, but it's VERY obvious when you open them up and they don't have any pages. Not to mention the "This is a copy" disclaimer inside.
It's not like the Sapphire situation where the, erm, "second run" was created to look as close to the original as possible. These are designed to look nice from the front, and that is their sole purpose. They are not intended to duplicate the full manuals or "fool" anyone.
-
henry, i understand your point and would fully agree IF these were complete reproductions of the manual, if they are just a single page slip which are different to the manual then they SHOULD be ok, but i also tend to think there should be something on the front to show they are not manuals. as we all know someone in future will get a MC insert, take a photo and then sell the game with manaul, and unless you can tell from all pages including front that this is not original then it MAY become a future problem. I like the idea, and i like what has been produced, but i also think they need clear disclaimers on all sides .. so even though i voted yes im really on the fence depending on the disclaimer stuff.
-
I am sure henry is not going to be the only one in time with concerns, but just keep in mind everyone these are a 2 page scanned insert , not a manual.
henry you are thinking all ebay....I am thinking more on the lines of replacing that bad insert people have done them selves with an added bonus of a bit of the story and the controls inside. Seeing this a bootleg i did not but if more feel this way i wont do it.
a small tasteful disclaimer may be needed on the front of the manual then and i will look at that.
Maybe i am to trust worthy as i feel the people here that i offer them to would be good about them, sure i guess others could get there hands on these but i am not the only one with a high res scanner and a high end printer... anyone could do these if they wanted <<shrugs>>
-
No disclaimer on the front please or I wont be interested. Keep in mind the shitty eBay sellers will use stock photos and not actual pics.
-
I second Duo_R. Please keep the cover untouched.
-
I print my own covers for some games, even if Sparky doesn't do this it doesn't mean someone else won't. I would however always disclose if a game had a repro cover (but I am a gamer and have never sold a game like that yet).
Also another consideration - what would someone do if they got a game with Sparky's spine label sticker sold as original? I think that could easily happen but I haven't heard of this being an issue yet.

I don't round off the corners on the bottom of the label so I can always tell which ones are sparky and which ones aren't :P

Thirded. I wouldn't be interested in these if the covers had any sort of watermark or disclaimer. I'd be better off sticking with my printouts of shitty cover-scans I pick up online.
-

I agree with this, as well; although I have no opinion either way on the inserts so I didn't vote.
Eventually one will end up on eBay as hard as we try to prevent it... To think otherwise is well... Remember the CCAG '09 copies of Insanity?
-
While one may end up on ebay eventually.... im not convinced that enough will show up to signiicantly impact values etc. It will be unfortunate but as has been stated one poor feedback should settle the issue of a seller trying to take advantage.
-
well you got it guys, will leave them as they are... Henry is good guy so i think it bothered me some that he was not on board but 1 of 20 is not bad so i will move forward.
ALSO I am maxing the post count to 200 before you can get these inserts OR have a good rep on here.
Thanks for all the feedback good or bad as it needs to be heard.
<<huggles>>
-
hopefully by the time they are ready i may have a 200 post count, but not sure..
-
Spam away! Lol

As said before I think these kick ass. Though the poll FAIL'S for the lack of I AM LE DUMB option. :P

Though the poll FAIL'S for the lack of I AM LE DUMB option. :P
here, here.
-
Sparky do you have a timeline? Which ones will go to print first?
Thanks!
-
Sparks, on the inside can you have one page dedicated to like the story, you know that quick introduction to the games story, etc. And the 2nd page with the basic game controls? For most TG-16 manuals that I have seen there really is only a couple pages of useful information.
-
You remember how Nintendo and Sega used to "thank" players for purchasing a game on the first page of their respective manuals? You could throw in a "thank you" notice, and combine it with a line confirming that the manual is fan made. Just an idea...
-
PS: It was vestcoat i believe that did the Gate of Thunder inlay, i printed it out and it looks f@cking great.

I wanted one that incorporated the Japanese art. The text is from the manual.
Apparently the hi-res .tif and .pdf are no longer hosted at pcedev; if anyone wants one, let me know.
EDIT:

That's the back insert I want! :D
-
I knew you were involved vestcoat & i think that is the one i have.. so much better than Joeys :P (oh i joke, its is way better :P) (hugs joe)
Time frame is when i have time and the story will be on one side and the pad controls on the other.
BUT in some cases the controls & or the story is long & takes up 2 pages, When i am faced with this the controls will take priority.

where are the high-res copies at for GOT?

where are the high-res copies at for GOT?
Good point these are 72dpi, could you post/upload one at 300dpi?
Thanks

A forum member has expressed interest in hosting the hi-res images again and an announcement will be made when they have a more permanent home.
In the meantime, these links are good for 1 week or 100 downloads.

The .tif: https://rcpt.yousendit.com/994541185/bc3c87cd24094ebdee932833d0315bb9
EDIT: The files are now available on Mediafire courtesy of Necromancer!
PDF - http://www.mediafire.com/?gv5i1xusbplquiw
TIF - http://www.mediafire.com/?3uu3644bll30t5c
I tried to save each format at the highest quality settings but the tif is larger (7MB vs 2MB) and perhaps better quality.
Also, Sparky, if you'd like to offer prints to sell along with your stickers and inserts, please do so. Last time around I got a couple PMs (to which I never replied! ) from members without fancy printers asking for hard copies.
While I was digging up the files, I made a couple more improvements, mainly changing the "HCD" code from the disc to the more common "TGXCD" code from the manual.
Here's an updated JPEG:

These look great. I need one for W Ring.
-
Sparks, in addition to the inserts and trays, would you consider reprints of maps? News papers (Sherlock Holmes), and JB Book?
Thanks
-
no dont want to get into that area Mother-g and i am not doing inlays/trays, just inserts.
Guys like i mentioned before i am not doing everything, your looking at about 8 of the hard to find games.
Have to think of my time as well. list coming tomorrow
-
My parents have a high end photo printer I could use. My Ys 1+2 and 4-in-1 pack in games could use these. My 4-in-1, I found it in a bargain bin sealed, so there are no manuals or a back insert :( .
-
Did you see the inserts posted? Print away
-
Thank you for posting printable quality versions of teh art!
-
Yep. I remember seeing them a while ago but forgot about it till now.
BTW, the inserts will come in handy for the TG-16/CD games with really bad art. That is first flaw I could think of with most US games packaging. Good thing the HuCards were too small to commonly have the same art on them. Cadash has the nice cover art on the HuCard. I gotta hand it to Working Designs on that one.
-
Now if only we could come up with a collection of nice glossy stickers with new artwork to go over the ugly and boring HuCard labels. (Except for those few exceptions of course)
Mock-up

Looks nice, Mother. :)
-
Stickers on hucards??? i think that is a sin <<shrugs>>
Ok here is what i have on tap for custom inserts... (sorry for the wait)
Magical Chase
Dynastic Hero
Bonk 3 (CD)
Bonk 3 (hucard)
Ys
Gate of Thunder
Air Zonk
Super Air Zonk
Dungeon Explorer 2
these all will be ready next week....
I might do a couple more like might & magic and terraforming but that is about it..... if i am not covering the manuals you want and if your an f-ebay member well i will do some customs for ya but be patient please. Sorry guys for not doing more but i have to keep this simple as my life is as busy as the next guys.
-
*finger snap* Darn, I was hoping for Soldier Blade to be in there. Oh well. Great job Sparks, I will most likely place an order.
-
We might need ya to do a F@ck ebay edition Sapphire insert
-
I'd be all over a Gate of Thunder back insert. :D
-
I'd be all over a Gate of Thunder back insert. :D
Same here, no matter how much I try I can't get it perfect and perforated. Perhaps there is a place we can get them done professionally? (Sparky already said no, which is cool)
-

Yeah, Sparky does so much for us in the community.
-
MG - I just print on photopaper, and it turns out just perfect. Use like a butter knife to get the spine edge to bend in right, then when the CD holder tray pops in it finishes the job. I used to use preforated spine inserts (like the kits that u buy) but those never worked right. Just good ole photopaper.
-
Hmm that's a good idea. Never thought about using a butter knife to perforate it. I will try that! =)

If i had a manual of Sapphire or a high res scan i would do it for sure and i would be happy to do vestcoats or joes GOT inlay but i would not feel right charging for them so not sure what to do about that.
Also to do a good perforated edge use the back side of your Xacto knife (the dull side) and do 1 swipe with a ruler of coarse with some decent pressure and it will fold up nicely. Takes some practice guys but it works.
-
Sparky those turned out great, I would like:
Bonk 3 CD
Super Air Zonk
Dungeon Explorer 2
Magical Chase
Thanks Sparks!
-
Ohhh man... I say these things will become the norm to accompany loosies on ebay in 2011.

Maybe less use of ebay would calm your nerves.... <<shrugs>>

I can scan the insert on my fakler sapphire. Its not a complete manual, just a simple insert kind of like what you're making.
-
cool blue... i will pm you my email address... this should make the ebays buyers sweat :P
-
cool, it then becomes a replica of a replica
-
I think it's a great idea, but I'd go one step further and reproduce 'em in their entirety. They're clearly marked as reproductions, so I doubt they'll ever be worth stupid money on ebay; sure some clown will try to sell 'em for big bucks, but we all need a good laugh now and then anyway.
I'm not sure it would be a great idea to reproduce manuals in their entirety, since someone devious enough could scan the pages all, remove the "repro" marks on the inside pages, and then produce "real" ones.
-

So what? There's nothing preventing them from doing that with original manuals, none of which are all that hard to obtain.
-
Sparks any plans to add more when you arent as busy? Bomberman 93 seems like a good candidate, and so does Parasol Stars. :-D
-
Duo-R check your email.
Sparky, if you could do U.S. Soldier Blade that would be awesome!
-
haha anyone could really make a copy. were just all lazy

So it's somehow easier to obtain a real Magical Chase or Bonk 3 manual to reproduce versus buying a $3 repro and doing so? Of course, anyone who REALLY wants to can put in the time and money to try and scam, but I don't think those scummy people should be given the tools to do so easily.
-
These are really nice inserts....Can you do the same thing with other platforms....or maybe share some of your secrets to the success you have had in making these look so great....
To anyone who thinks these will show up on ebay and sell for way more...just report the sellers.....buy one pay with paypal get your money back and see what happens....should be interesting...
Its just all about making your collection look fresh...Having old raty games or games without manuals.....just makes a collection of any size look foolish...sure Ive got a parasol stars, but the spine sticker look terrible.....give me a repro of that anyday to make it match the rest....(found here earlier)

Chris, for the other platforms there already is alot of the work already done, all you need is photo paper, and for some games some universal game cases. Here is some stuff I did:

And here is where insert graphics can be found:

You will find a Turbografx section there, but they use DVD cases (which I don't really like). I like what we have done on this website. One consideration is contributing what we have done here and putting on that website.
Oh by the way - this has been on there for YEARS and I have never bought something from ebay that had a cover reprinted from this website.

I have been a graphic designer since '93 so i will take some credit but finding a good printer is key, find an exclusive printing shop that has been around for years, they know there shit and care about what there doing, and with that comes quality.

No these inserts are not for that website.. just for here.
PS: motherg and duo-r... PM if you want more than what i am offering for inserts, we can discuss :)

I'm not even close to 200 posts :(
But if I get any of the bootleg copies of Sapphire I would be intressted of a "bootleg" insert (why not mark the insert "BOOTLEG" on the front lower right corner?)
And so one small step closer to 200 posts :D

I was hoping we could make a Fack Ebay edition insert :P

I was more referring to like the GOT insert, YS 1&2, etc. I just feel bad that the TG-16 section is a bunch of DVD cases, which I think totally blows. Yet the awesomeness is found for the other consoles.

Man I love those TG16 DVD covers I need an order of the griffon Case though they didnt have one :( The DVD cases would be awesome for loosies
-
those cases look awesome - how would they hold hucards?
-
very nice. i need some of these for some of the games i bought.
-
I haven't tried the DVD cases for Turbo games, prefer to use Keith Courage or sports games and use Sparky labels. But those rock for other platforms.
-
where can i get the cases for the SNES games, and do they also makes these cases for genesis games and NES games?
-
Universal game cases, works for Genny and Sneak, and NES with Modding. Also fits N64.
Google it or I will post later.
-
Those are awesome Sparky, I don't need any butits a great thing your doing for the forum. Nothing worse then saying HEY COME CHECK OUT MY COLLECTION and all you have is a Huey. If these fall into ebay sellers hands just ask a question before buying the game. No seller is gonna get rich making these and selling them on ebay.
