Duo Read Issue - Fix - Remove Lazer Housing
« on: July 16, 2011, 09:30:39 AM »
I have just come across this video on Utube showing how the removal of the CD housing can fix a read issue!

I have not tried this myself so I cannot vouch for how successful this fix is!

if that cover is causing read issues, you have another issue (the cover not properly installed)

The only reason I can see for removing a cover fixing a read issue is if the cover was somehow interfering with the disc spinning.  Like steve said, either installed not clipped in all the way, OR if the spindle deck is pushed down too low causing the CD to rub the laser track cover.

That's my video... and no it wasn't obvious, as a matter a fact it made no sense what so ever. It was properly inserted and the disc is not scraping against it at all.

I even made a thread about it..

the cover is either rubbing the cd or the laser sled

If its rubbing against the laser sled how would I go about fixing it?

on the cd rom2 you would need to bend the cover as its sheet metal
on the duo if its properly locked in it should never have an issue unless it was deformed somehow.
if it hits you should be able to scrape it as needed

This actually seems like a semi-common phenomenon, as I mentioned in the original thread, I've had a PC-FX with the same issue as well as some CD-ROM^2 drives.

It's really a mystery to me how this happens, but also like I said in that thread, I usually just throw the stupid things straight in the trash and continue with life. Takes two seconds, and saves a lot of headache.

I think it probably keeps the laser from focusing in as closely as it'd like in some cases.

That cover is like 1 mm below the disc, plus the thickness of the cover... without it the laser can probably get ~2mm closer to the surface of the disc.  Just guessing.

the laser rides on 2 hard rails below the cover with the distance set by spindle height, so it wont affect the distance.
it is possible that it could offer some friction against the laser causing tracking errors, tho only if something mechanical is not exactly where it should be.
i have seen read errors that come and go cured by greasing the gears and rails, but never needed to leave the cover off.

Flipping the cover/housing over there appear to be visible radial looking scratches along the center,  but im not sure if those are normal.

I took a look at the laser assembly and rails and couldnt find anything to be causing it to scrape.

I'll take apart my other duo and see what happens if i swap out some stuff.
