playing consoles using AV on a monitor
« on: October 17, 2011, 07:43:56 PM »
So i have a Asus vh236 monitor that i use to play my ps3. i want to use it to play some of my other consoles. so i purchased this VGA to av/s-video converter.
http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/Eforcity-VGA-to-S-Video-3-RCA-Adapter/4611948/product.html

I bought it because my brother looked it up for me. to closer inspection it seems like this wont work for me. I tested it out today and it doesn't work. Is there another converter i can get to accomplish this.

You can use something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Composite-S-Video-Converter-Scaler-Adapter/dp/B005CV4ZH6/ref=pd_cp_e_3
There are a lot of them on the market that look very similar to that, and they're all rebranded Lenkeng
devices. The original website is here:  http://www.lenkeng.net/
These Lenkeng scalers have a bit better quality than your standard HDTV scaler, but still look worse than a CRT. They get the job done though.

If you want the best quality, you need to invest in a real upscaler, like the Micomsoft XRGB series. They're pricey though, and not really worth it if you're just feeding composite into it. If you get your system RGB modded though, that's a different story.

I think this might be a little closer to what you're looking for.  It takes and RCA composite video signal and turns it into a VGA signal:
http://www.amazon.com/VideoSecu-Composite-Video-BNC-Converter/dp/B001SJDESC/ref=sr_1_7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1318950882&sr=1-7
The one grahf posted (which eventually led me to this one) takes RCA and converts it to hdmi, though maybe your monitor has an hdmi input. :)

anytime you try to convert RCA/Svideo to a VGA signal it looks like crap (even with an XRGB)
if your console has native RGB or way to get an rGB signal you can take that to VGA alot easier.
