Has anyone ever gotten past the 1st stage of this game at all before?

I drop down a hole, the devil guy says something in Japanese, then I have to make some kind of choice.

No matter which one I pick, I'm automatically drawn to that altar and getting killed.

Yeah, I beat this game.  It's actually pretty fun once you start to understand what the heck you have to do. hehe.

I don't remember what the text says, but what's supposed to happen is that your character starts to pray in the corner and you then take control of your spirit(?) which appears roughly in the middle of the screen.  You're supposed to fly around shoot the devil in the head a number of times. I don't think the choice you make matters.

This was one of the few games I had early on, so I played it constantly back in the day.  I didn't even know it was an arcade game until I saw it emulated in MAME.  Funny enough, one of my arcade hang outs has the game in there right now.  They have a small retro area that they swap out every month or so.

Hope that helps.

Heh that's good enough. I actually had my eye on the player the whole time.

My ignorance of Japanese language had me overthinking that. I once built up alot of money destroying enemies that I thought I had to pay a certain amount to get to the next stage.

I love this game, but I don't think I can get past the second level. The first level boss seems difficult at first, but it's not so bad. You control that spirit thing your kid summons and you use it to shoot magic at the demons. Really cool game!

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Shadow Land is cool indeed. Considering the space limitations of the time (HuCards were limited to 256 kilobytes in 1988), it's a great conversion from the arcade. Some people prefer the Famicom version because the level design was kept intact, though the graphics are weaker; I think on the contrary that Namco did a good job on the PCE trying to retain most of the original graphics while rearranging the level design so it fits into 2 megabits. And the soundtrack is just lovely.

I also love the idea of fighting the end of stage boss is a sort of "spirit mode" andstill being able to see you character praying next to the shrine. Neat.
Shame that half of the screen is taken up by the map though ...

It's like an out of body experience, totally awesome.
