turbografx 16 Controller repair
« on: April 15, 2012, 03:19:21 PM »
So back in the day I  ended up with a broken controller. The pins ripped out from the system end of the cable. would I just be able to buy a large 8 pin din cable and use it to fix my controller ?

There are two ways to go about it. Do you still have the pins that fell out? Was it the entire pin assembly meaning all eight of them? I have just pushed them back into controller ports before just using a little bit of super glue around the sides to make sure it doesn't come apart again.

If that isn't an option then the easiest thing would be to get a junk controller and steal the cable from it. It's kind of a pain in the ass to solder a new din 8 jack onto the end of the cable. I am pretty handy with a soldering iron and I don't like soldering new ends on.

Yeah the pins are long gone this was broken around 1994 and being a pain to find controller back then in my area i said I would just fix it.

I was thinking of buying one of these

clipping the end of both the tg16 controller and the correct pin end of the other cable and then soldering the two parts back.

That would work but hopefully that cable has a color coding that works with the pin order. I've bought similar cables before and haven't been able to figure out the pin order for the wires cause some cables have different colors inside or even same colors different order. Also that cable you are looking at would only work for a pc engine or duo system. You would need this if it is for a TG 16 http://www.bestpricecables.com/nec-turbo-grfx-extension-cable.html

Yeah i knew that since the pce/duo style systems used the mini din connectors. Where as the tg16 had the larger din connectors.

I was going to use this incase of different colors cables

Whether you're buying a cable to cut the ends off of or buying the unsoldered plugs to make your own cable, you need to be careful.  The connector you're looking for is an "8-pin 270 DIN male" connector.  However, there are two different connectors of this type and only one fits the TG16.  The difference is the middle pin.  Some connectors place that pin in the very center, the other connector the center pin is slightly offset (see image).

The connector that fits the TG16 is the one with the off-center middle pin.  I searched long and hard for a place to buy these connectors.  The best price I've found is Jameco part number 15895 (http://www.jameco.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?freeText=15895&langId=-1&storeId=10001&productId=15895&search_type=jamecoall&catalogId=10001&ddkey=http:ProductDisplay).  Only .75 each, although Jameco has a $10 minimum order.  I bought 4 or 5 of these connectors and I can confirm they fit perfectly into the TG16 controller port.

Thank you freezer for the information, I will make sure to place that into my notes since no one has told me that before.
