is it true that "backup booster1" works as an AV booster AND a battery backup, and that backup "booster2" omits the AV booster, but still acts as a battery backup unit?
I got a BB2 bundled in with my Coregrafx system, and the seller was convinced it had the built-in AV booster, yet I found a website ( http://www.sdk-team.com/collection_nec_pce.htm ) that says it was only BB1 that had that.

Hmmm, I think Aaron used to have this documented here at pcenginefx ... he might know.
Anyway, let's assume it's true. If BB1 lacks A/V, it really only affects folks who have the original white PC-Engine (which had RF output only).
CoreGrafx models had A/V output (on right-hand side, but you need a special A/V cable).
So you should be fine. I guess BB2 was for original PCE (white) consoles, since it would be redundant on the later models.
