Browning
« on: February 27, 2006, 08:40:48 AM »
I just picked up a copy of Browning for $6 shipped - pretty nice condition w/ spine card.

Anyway, I beat the game over the weekend and wondered what anybody elses opinions of the game are? Here is what I got out of this game.

The game is kind of cool(well sort of) - it has some nice scroll effects and some nice graphics for the most part. The cinemas are especially nice for '91 and are in English. Some/most of the enemies (of the whole 10?) look graphically nice as well. The music for the most part is average, though I do like the music from level 2. The gameplay/controls are pretty bad - reminds me of Genocide.  And the levels very short. There is a lot missing from this game, it feels more like an early beta. This could have been a really cool game, had the design been allowed to develope into something ressembling that of a higher quality production.

I haven't played it, but have been interested by it. Thanks for the words about it, certainly interests me more now. The Guy Kazama/Bowie voice actor does the main voice right? That's just weird they got him to do the voice for a Japanese only game and have the game all in English. I really don't understand Japan most of the time.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

It reminded me of Mad Stalker, which isn't a good thing.  I think I got through level 1 before selling it off.

Browning? Pretty weird name for a game.  I thought it was a game about baking brownies for a moment...:P

Sorry, but I don't see your library card on the books of Ys.  Now, RETURN THEM TO ME!!!

A Browning is a gun, I think it might be a German gun, like a Luger, or a Walther P38(Megatron).  I think the game is kinda cool, but, it IS short.  There seems to be alot of detail, you see shell's flying as you shoot.  I'd say Mad Stalker blows this game away, Mad Stalker, & even Genocide, have a much faster pace.

I always wondered about this game back in the day. Today- I'd take Browning over Genocide, but that would still be the lesser of two evils.

I imported Genocide back in 93 or 94 and was completely horrified. I hated the games crappy controls and the fact I was out $80 on the recommendation of some lame ass Die Hard sales employee. I did beat Genocide, even though I despised it.

I bought it used also for under $20 or something. I think I remember the English cinemas being pretty cool for the most part. Four levels in all though? Yeah, it was pretty short. I beat it, but it was nothing memorable overall.

I've only gotten to level 3 or 4, but it's a much better game than Browning. Matter of fact Browning may only be worth your time, if you're watching some beat the game :P

It is weird to hear Guy Kazama's voice in the game - he has a conversation with a couple of the Boss's(in game style).

PS: One of my favorite Guy Kasama quotes - "Something's in the water... something just grazed past my MEAT!".

Hahaha, Browning is HORRIBLE.  It's not even as funny as Last Alert or Final Zone 2, because there are only three or four awkward conversation scenes.  One of them is great though, I made sure to record it to CD before I sold this crappy game off.

Evil Boss: "I'm impressed that you've made it this far, Rambo."
Hero: "Nice try, but my name is ARNOLD!"

. . . . .

Yeah.  It's one of the most under-developed (as in: it could have been good with more time and attention) games I've ever played.  I should probably review it sometime, but I'm not sure I want those bad memories to resurface.

X68000 version of Genocide (1989) is just as bad as the SCD except with better scrolls. Genocide 2 (1991) on the X68000 is pretty cool, much better controls and cool graphic/level design - that's the one they should have ported to SCD.

Mad Stalker is also on the X68000 - from what I've played it's the same except for a little more color and more scrolls (three layers).
