VR Headset = Potential Awesomeness
« on: October 16, 2012, 12:36:42 PM »
http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/10/16/hands-on-with-sonys-headmount-visor

I read this article and my mind was blown.  I hope it isn't too long before this technology is available and practically priced.  I know that Valve is apparently working on similar headset hardware.

Anyone else think this sounds amazing?

VR Headset = Potential Dorkiness

That said, I'd be all over this :D

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

The fact that this journalist could not tell reality from VR is what really stood out to me.

I remember they had a VR Headset back in the day at a local amusement park that I played Duke 3D on.  It was fun, but was faaaaaarrrrrr away from VR.  This seems to be almost there.

...porn would be awesome, you are right.  Even sex with hideous chicks could be awesome, if the headset has you seeing a smokin' hot broad.

I'm holding my breath until it gets released. VR headsets have been done and done, and none of them have truly delivered. I hope it works out though.

I think it's about time the whole VR headset idea was revisited with modern technology. It seems like VR was a big buzzword in the 90's, but the tech wasn't there yet and anyone that played any VR type thing can tell you, it was expensive, clunky, and it sucked. I still don't think we're there yet, but that article gives me hope that maybe in another 10 years we might have something useful and not super expensive.

Didn't Sega make a prototype Genesis headset and scrap it? It wasn't because the technology sucked, it was because of concerns over long-term exposure to fake 3-D effects. Read a thread about it on here or another VG forum awhile back with a link to an interview with one of the designers...wish I could find it.

I know what you're talking about vestcoat, basically they were worried about the effect on the developing eyes of children and how much harm it could cause.  I've actually got some swag pins from conferences that show the "prototype" VR headset you're talking about.
