Cheap Surround Sound Suggestions?

Thanks for all the help.  As I am not much of a sound guy, I never really realized how much this whole side of the entertainment setup would cost.

I am going to keep an eye open for some of the things mentioned here.  Did the research on sound bars and they don't seem to have the connectivity I would want, so I am going to do the stereo / 5.1 piece by piece route.

CNET has a review of $400 speakers that are apparently pretty good. http://reviews.cnet.com/surround-speaker-systems/energy-take-classic-5/4505-7868_7-33310963.html   I was thinking of springing for these and just having them sit there until I find a receiver I like.

Im using old school stereo. All my gear is either from the trash or the thrift store, and im sure it sounds better than what 90% of people use nowadays.
This being said, i compared dozens of Amp/speakers combinations before settling on what i currently use.
I would just go to a big thrift store that lets you test stuff and get a badass old school system.
