I was a casual Daft Punk fan from Da Funk until I saw them on the Alive 2007 tour (Berkeley CA) and...shit, that was amazing. The best concert I've ever seen or probably will see. After that I "got" them.
Evidently their popularity has grown, slowly but surely, over the last 20 years because they've supposedly sold 300k copies of RAM in the US alone so far. This is more than twice as many copies as their last album ever sold in the US. I think the HUGE hype blitz is probably helping. They are totally saturating the world with ads for this record. The Lotus F1 car will be running Daft Punk livery this weekend at Monaco. That ain't cheap.
The good thing is that they spend a great deal of the long time between records working on their sound and a huge chunk of the revenue on hiring the best partners to help them. RAM is MAGICALLY well produced. I think once they release a few remixes the total RAM experience might actually exceed Discovery, and that's saying something.
I ended up with two copies of the LP. I'll be donating one of them to the radio station I work at since we don't get a lot of promos from majors.
