This is why digital only games and DRM SUCK - Round one

from the article

"This wasn't a major event, but it was a tournament streamed yesterday by a pretty big name in the fighting game community, Team Spooky, and it's not the kind of closeup Killer Instinct was hoping for. The tournament lost its Internet connection and, well, this console couldn't continue.P

This occurred in the winners final at yesterday's Defend the School tournament, held at Queens College in New York. Qualifying rounds for the Defend the North fighting game tournament, a pro eSports event, were also held there. The outage occurs around the 6:35 mark of the above video, and the DRM check is done after the match was finished, so the players were not booted mid-round.P

Yes, this is how digital-only games work and not just for the Xbox One, when multiple accounts are on one console. What would most easily solve the problem in a competition setting, though, is if Killer Instinct was on a disc, which it is not. P

So either the console has to be the unit that bought the game, or an account that bought the game must be signed in, to pass the ownership check if the Internet goes out. How all this is handled when Killer Instinct's basic game is free (you get one playable character) and the rest of its content can be bought a la carte is another wrinkle, too.P

Whatever the case, "Huge DRM blowup in the middle of the match," Team Spooky wrote in the description of this video. "I really hope this never happens at majors."P"

Maybe they learned something and will vote with their money, refusing to support such shit.

Probably not.

Not to mentioned I believe Capcom has lost the Marvel license again so I believe all the MvC digital copies will no longer be available soon.

I remember something similar happening to me with Xbox 360.  When the original Rock Band came out I had a group of people that came over and loved to play.  It was a big hit at my place and $100+ of DLC was purchased.  We decided to play someplace else and the internet was out.  As I was unable to log-in to the console, no additional songs were available.  I remember everyone being very disappointed and it just killed the night.

The problem with the liscenses being tied to a system is if a system breaks, then your licenses are now only tied to your XB Live account which is something that presumably has a finite lifespan.  This happened to me when my original XB360 bit the dust, all of the stuff I bought on my original console only worked when I was logged online on my new console.

In the end, disc support is the only way to prevent this shit.  Even so, I already forsee 20 years from now where people will remember certain DLC fondly, but access to the DLC will be difficult or non-existant, even though it was paid for.

I only buy new for modern games.  I like them to save their virginity just for me lol.
