I was wondering if anyone has played the PC Engine version of shape shifter. Is there any text or menus that would make it hard to play as opposed to the American version. I have never played it, so I dont know how the text is in the game, but the PC Engine version is like 1/3 the cost. How is the game overall btw?

I've never played the PCE version, but I don't think you'd feel like you were missing much. You can't talk to the people in the towns anyway. The only people you talk to are the ones behind doors, and all their speech is voiceover. But all they mostly do is load/save, sell you weapons, upgrade them, and do a lame reading of your fortune. Keep a walkthrough handy and you'll be fine.

The game is tons of fun at first, but gets kind of frustrating and difficult after about an hour. I hate the jumping part as the cat. I didn't get much farther than that, which isn't very far really.

I haven't played the PCE version, but there's so little text to deal with in the Turbo rendition that I can't imagine it would present much of a problem.  You only have to work with text when you enter shops in the two towns.  There's plenty of voice, but figuring out where to go next usually requires that you pay close attention to your surroundings rather than listen to "clues."  The game is quite linear in that you can't get to certain places until you've acquired certain abilities or items.  The action is straightforward hack-and-slash stuff with a transformation element applied.  In any event, there are at least two very thorough walkthroughs available on the web for it.

The game is one of my favorites.  There are so many brilliant ideas at work to go along with the excellent soundtrack and gigantic bosses.  Crybabies will complain about the controls and the high level of difficulty, but if you're willing to put in some practice and you don't mind a good challenge, you should have plenty of fun with it.  The only thing I really fault it for is that it only lets you save in one location.

I think it's one of those games were you either like it or hate it. I really wanted to like this game. It had decent-to-good music and and some pretty good graphics in most areas.

I think in the end, it felt too much like a European game( i.e. amiga and sega european games ) - which to me are not overly appealing. If were to have a more japanese feel/look, I think the issue of controls and difficultly would have taken a back seat.

It shouldn't be much harder than the english version, if you're willing to use a walkthrough or my map.

The thing is, even in english, people can get completely stuck anyway.

Even as early as right after the second boss when you're supposed to figure out that they want you to jump over the entrance to the cave to get to a new area.

If you want, I can send you a screenshots of the city's shops, to use as a refference. The armor shop that comes up later is the exact same as the weapon shop, I believe that the top item is the weakest/cheapest and that the bottom is the best/priciest.

If buying the cheap import means you trying the game at all, then definately go for it.

You can find my walkthrough and a simple version of the map here-

You can get the deluxe map here-

I've got a newer version of the walkthrough somewhere, but the one on GameFAQs is more than good enough.

I think the PCE version, might be easier actually.  When I first played it, years ago, I was able to get to moon or whatever.  But, when I finally got the US version, I deffinitly couldn't get that far, that games hard!  I finally beat it though, using the unlimited guys/crystals cheat.  Even then, the last bosses were tough for me.
