Hey welcome aboard, and ya what Black tiger said, even being patient in finding good deals on games can set you back this day and age. Good luck and if you decide to go for the actual games this place can guide you on prices, and even suggest some start you off games that are good but will not rip open your wallet. <<welcome hug>>

Thanks a ton for the welcome! It's always tricky making a post like this because some  communities jump on you at the first sigh of weakness, but it hasn't been like that at all lol

At least not yet...

I've got quite a few genesis, nes, snes games but from what I understand Turbo/PCE is kind of a different beast.

Welcome, comrade :)

Complete list of ACD games:

(Note that you might not want to play all of them unless you are a fan of mahjong, wrestling and baseball simulators...)

Here is a nice guide:

http://pcenginefx.com/main/nec_compatibility_guide.html

..just to help you understand where a DUO fits into things (you should get one).

That compatibility guide is actually really, really useful to understanding what works with what. Wonder how well the TurboGrafx would have fared if they had made this situation a little bit easier to understand and released more games for the thing stateside  :-k

Welcome to the turbo family! You'll soon see it is a very special system and it has the charm of the underdogs. If you want a TG-16, just get an everdrive and play whatever you want. If you get a Pc Engine you'll still be able to find cheap games.

I think everyone's spot on with recommending the PC Engine Duo-R or RX.  I myself just really got into the scene about six or seven years ago when I discovered Ys I&II, and then I spent a few years just trying out a lot of the library before knuckling under and getting a Duo-R.  I got extremely lucky and snagged one on E-Bay for a little over $100; although I had to buy the power supply, AV cables, and controller separately.  I spent about $160 total to put it all together and I've had zero issues despite putting a lot of hours in on it.

Esteban's guide for Arcade Card games is a great resource.  I have Gulliver Boy and 3x3 Eyes, which can actually be played without the card, but with the card you get much faster load times and even more animation in cutscenes.  I wouldn't recommend it for everyone, but I'm very happy with my Arcade Card Duo.

If you like Splatterhouse, the Japanese HuCard has the benefit of being both cheaper and uncensored.  The US version actually makes some really odd cuts to relatively tame parts of the game.

These days Duo-r and rx tended to costs more thanks to crazied sellers and some buyers with deep pocket.  I was able to snag an R off eBay a few months ago for around $150 shipped.  It had one minor issue which when I found it, I was able to figure out (with a very helpful text someone made) that one line between CD controller chip and the 64kb ram chip was bad.  A short piece of kynar wire raised the value of my system to over $200. :D  (oh yeah it's modded with second LED that shows blue while powered on and shuts off to allow red LED when using CD drive.)

I got a Duo R on this site and I am very happy with it.  I would look for one as it is the best way to go to have access to most of the games right away.  Don't be a collectard, just play the games.
