What is it about gold color that just doesn't age well?

It's like the "gold plastic syndrome" you see on some old action figures; they just crumble in your hands.

So far, a few people have seen it.
2 votes for arkhan being the culprit.
A couple folks equating the original question to any kind of "value" depreciation.
...oh, and tool being, well, tool.

Status quo thread.

I recall this being mentioned somewhere before. Intresting, I vote that it's some sort of hidden message hidden for future gamers, hidden by time release paint.

Also using the PCEFX gamers scale they are 95+ - loved, used, and in good shape.   could a been 100+ i there were some teeth marks, or maybe some of ark's actual seed or boogers dried on them.
NW: Hey, I made it on this psycho's Enemies' List, how about that ?? ;)

BT: Look at how the fake SFII' carts instantly sold out and were immediately listed on eBay before the flippers even took possession. Look at Nintendo's overpriced bricks. Look at the typical forum discussions elsewhere.

You can't tell most retro gamers anything!

You're on an internet forum. You cannot expect better. You may get better, but you can't expect it.

I am curious what components are used in gold dye or coloring to make it appear gold. I'm guessing some metallic powder of some kind that is later oxidizing.

The gold shine on my copy is practically gone.  Top layer of paint wears off easily.  Mine is worn to the point that it looks like a dull brownish gray.

It's a shame that the paint wears off relatively quick with time, funny because it's like one of the few videogame stuff that's decaying NOW consistently across all copies. I wonder if I'm going to have a heart attack 20 years later with all my hucards becoming unreadable or something like that.

At least you can still play the copies of China Warrior.

It's not happening on any other HuCARDs I own...so 99% of games will be fine. Only specific batches of specific colors may give us problems in the future. But I think an overwhelming  majority of HuCARDs will be fine for decades to come.
