1 the batteries do connect directly to the ac jack
2 that did look like a bad solder joint on the ac jack

What issues are you having with the buttons?  A lot of times its those carbon traces that have deteriorated and require bypassing.

The buttons work, but the rubber pads are splitting where the conductive part meets the rubber. So, the D-pad works when i press, but the pads have caved in, so i don't feel the button being pushed down as i press.

This is a common problem for controllers

Are they compatible? I don't think the I/II buttons are the same size as A/B buttons

All buttons except for the Select and Start buttons are compatible with NES controllers even though they look a little different. So yes it would work for button 1 and 2
