Recommendations for PC Engine games CD/hu card
« on: November 17, 2015, 04:29:22 AM »
I have a pc engine duo now. It's awesome, but not region modded. I needed some recommendations of games. I have star parodier, and a home brew (insanity???) Anyway, I do not know jappanese, so it would have to be shmups and platformer. Let me know, I'm looking for hidden gems to play

You just want hidden gems? If so, here are a couple:

Formation Armed F - I'm probably in the minority, but this game is brilliant. It might be a shoddy conversion of the arcade game, but it's still a great game.

Violent Soldier (US Sinistron) - Similar to above, but more recognized. Great level designs and very challenging.

Download - another awesome shooter with a great vibe and some of the best engrish ever.

I suggest you invest on an Everdrive first, so you can sample the games you like and then you don't have to take my or anybody else's word.

Kaze Kiri
Double Dragon 2
Pomping World
Valis 3
Forgotten Worlds (brilliant port)
Gain Ground SX
Bomberman 94

I'm still discovering games myself so will add anything else I stumble across. :)

Look at http://www.thebrothersduomazov.com/

He goes in to pretty big detail as to what games require japanese knowledge and which don't

^^^Brothers Duomazov is THE site to go to (aside from The PCE Software Bible). I always go to that site for reviews of games I'm thinking about buying or to read reviews of games I already own. He even has some guides for games (which are also linked to on here as well).

Sift through his site and spend an afternoon reading some reviews, they're pretty well written and have great screenshots to showcase whatever game you're looking at.

Go after PCE shooters, there's a lot of underrated games (specially in the shootie dept.) that can be purchased for cheap.

Here are some that I have discovered.
Hucards
BIKKURI MAN WORLD - It is really Wonderboy in Monster World.
Don Doko Don- reminds me of snow brothers
MÄRCHEN MAZE - an overhead shooter, sort-of Alice in Wonderland characters
MOMOTARŌ KATSUGEKI - basically Peach boy, platformer
OBOCCHAMA-KUN - a very odd wacky platformer (usually fairly cheap to pick up)
YŌKAI DŌCHŪKI - good platformer, some spooks and monsters
GENPEI TŌMA DEN - KANNONI - can't explain it, but I love this game. side scrolling platformer. Maybe its the giant worm, flying eyeballs, or the blasted monkeys. It gets so weird in places.
Dungeon Explorer - even though it is in Japanese and you won't know what the story is about, you will still have a lot of fun and the gameplay will in certain ways remind you of Gauntlet.
Street Fighter 2- hey it is a very good port of the arcade game.
And the shooters, as everyone is recommending, are awesome, if you are into that genre. I have 18 just in my PC Engine library alone. I have 10 in my Turbo Grafx 16 library. A total of 28 different shooters. Gate of Thunder and Lords of Thunder are good CD-Roms of the same genre.

Image Fight
W-Rings
Heavy Unit
Paranoia
Armed F
Final Blaster
Super Star Soldier
Rock On
Cyber Core
R-Type I & II
Dragon Spirit
Space Harrier
After Burner 2
Rabio Lepus
Down Load
Raiden -simply the best arcade port of its day
Galaga
Soldier Blade
Aero Blasters
Air Zonk
Side Arms
Dead Moon
Blazing Lazers
Sinistron
Ordyne
Gradius
Salamander
Hini in the Sky

And I am still looking to add more.
