RF modded Core Grafx
« on: September 05, 2006, 10:45:06 AM »
Hi, a year ago i bought a core grafx on ebay from a canadian. When i received it, i saw, sadly, that it had not the av out. Instead it had an RF... but since then i have seen more of them on ebay... The console works with an interface unit, but the picture seems wider.. or at least the refresh is different from the normal one. It is odd.
Apart from that.... why in the "hellish" name of the hell did they put an RF on a Core Grafx??? Why?? I mean... it is silly!

Am I wrong? Any idea to do with it? I have never tryed to make it work using the aerial since i have never been able to make my own pc engine work with the aerial.

Maybe someone wanna buy it from me. I will post some pictures if anyone is interested and know what to make with it.
It is sad because it is in good shape and it could have been a great machine if an idiot didnt make that unuseful mod :P

hmm - well maybe they took an old white pc engine, working but with very yellowed casing. And they took the casing from a bust core grafx, and swapped it??

perhaps a bit unlikely, but take a look inside if you can, and see whats going on. Really makes no sense to RF mod DOWN from an AV console, not in this day and age.

actually, putting a PCE in a CGX shell seems the most likely explanation - they are basically the same size and shape, right?

Can you open it up and show us some pics?

the only reason i can image is, when the core pce (white) was no longer or just hardly available to import, those shops modified the core grafx back to a standard RF output, since back in those days a lot of TVs didn't support AV-composite. this modification i also could see in many mega drives back in time.

I think the answer is (well, could be) pretty simple:

Old PAL TVs won't support 60Hz (it will result in a flickering, unwatchable picture). RF, however, CANNOT be displayed in 60Hz on a PAL TV in ANY CASE, it will automatically be reduced to 50Hz, showing a clear picture on these old TVs.

The one who performed this mod most likely didn't have a TV that supported 60Hz and therefore, wanted to use RF instead of AV.
