I got these download codes as rewards for buying those Ys games off GOG; they're for Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena and System Shock 2.  Anyone want 'em?

I hope that you've already played System Shock 2 and aren't just passing it by.

Quite possibly the best game ever made.  :)

Congrats, I hope that you enjoy the game!

Just make sure that you go to www.systemshock.org and apply the fan mods to upgrade the game's textures and models from the original 1999 release versions.

The fans have done a brilliant job of keeping the game alive and looking as good as possible while still running the same old game engine.  :D

Why the hell would I do that?  I want to play System Shock 2, not Fan Shock 2 lol.

Entirely up to you.

The fans have done a great job in up-rezzing the original textures and some of the original models so that they look better on modern high resolution displays. It's the same game, it just looks a little nicer.

Sure, there are also fan mods that change the game ... but I personally avoid those.

If the purity of the original is what floats your boat, then I'm going to assume that you're also going to play it on a CRT monitor with Win98 on a 1GHz Pentium, too.

If so, good for you! That's how I played it back when the game first came out.

These days, on a high resolution monitor and a fast PC, I choose to play the game with some of the upgraded textures and models, and that's how I'd recommend someone new to the game actually play it.

It's not going to offend me at all if you choose to ignore the advice.

I played through System Shock 2 over the summer, the Steam release.  Didn't change a thing and I enjoyed it immensely, for what it's worth.  I hope to pick up System Shock 1 on the holiday sale and hit that up soon too!

Another one that fans did some great work on are the Xcom games.  Same game same look but with some fixes and improvements to work better on modern systems.

I've already completed Shock 1 a long time ago.  As for Shock 2, the Gog version is visually pure but runs in 1080p which is ideal for my setup.  My monitor is the Eizo FG2421 and is the closest you can get to the CRT look on a flat-panel display.  In fact I bought it to replace my old QXGA CRT that finally exploded earlier this year.  The FG2421 is amazing for older games due to it's insanely high contrast and brightness, and the Turbo 240hz mode really does make a huge difference with older games that will happily run at 120fps.  I stuck with a CRT for a computer monitor for as long as I could, but I'm quite happy with the Eizo as a replacement.
