PC Engine White Reads Some Hu Cards, Not All
« on: February 26, 2017, 05:29:51 AM »
*  I have a PC Engine that'll read some Hu Cards, one of them is an Adventure Island Type Game, the other is Majong.  The other two games I have for it don't read at all (JJ & Jeff and some other RPG).

*  I know the problem isn't the Hu Cards, because the JJ & Jeff and other RPG will boot on my other System, but not on the one that I'm having issues with.

*  I've tried cleaning the Hu Card slot to no avail.  The System shows a bit of corrosion on the inside, but nothing too bad or noticeable.

Last thing is that the Adventure Island game which will boot, starts at an advanced level.  Player goes in to a Shop, and some Japanese text comes up but then the game freezes.  Happens every time I play.  Is this possible a RAM Memory issue or soemthing?  Thanks

Are you trying to play the US version of JJ and Jeff in a JP system without a region mod?

No it's Kato & Ken version (Japan.)   I only have Japanese Hu Cards for it.

I'll take a quick look, but how would some games read then?  Do some games use different Hu Card metal tabs at the end of the Hu to read the game?

I did find a bit of rust on the inside of the Hu slot.  I got all of it out though.

That may explain why the one game just stops working after a few minutes, maybe the ROM on the Hu goes to a different pin for a different part of the programming, and just can't be read right... does that sound like a possibility?

I've tried using a piece of cardboard Hu Card size with a very fine sandpaper and Brasso attached to it.  It gets a lot of the crap out of the slot, but haven't had much luck still.  Do I need to power wash the damn thing?

I typically use one of those lint free clothes that comes with LCD computer monitors and a credit card to clean HuCard slots.

Take the lint free cloth and roll it up a bit and then dunk it in a rubbing alcohol bottle. Fold it over a credit card and start pushing and pulling it in and out of the slot. This cleans the slot pins just fine. If there is crap stuck down in there use a small tool and clean out any fuzz or other material that is stuck down in it.

I usually use a little dental pick type tool to scrape out any hard dried on gunk. Just be carefull not to bend or do anything to the pins down in there.

Thanks, I'll try that.  Hopefully that's all it is.

On a sidenote, I picked up a non-working PC Engine GT, and it came with out the green power switch.  I was wondering if it's different from the PC Engine Power Switch, or are they interchangeable?  I suppose I could just check but just lazy.

I just apply rubbing alcohol to a HU card using a q-tip. Cleans the slot perfect everytime.
