PC Engine DUO: please set disc message
« on: June 06, 2017, 12:15:37 AM »
Hello !
I decided after some years to use again my Japanese PC Engine Duo. After a few hours of playing i started to get the famous "please set disc!" message while trying to load CD games. After a little search on the web I decided to order a new optic block. It's now changed, the CD spins, but i still got the "please set disc!" message.
Any idea about what to try next ?
thanks a lot mates !
T.

Have you recapped the system yet?

Yes, check the second stickied thread.    Pretty much every cd-rom console would need to be re-capped at this point if not done already.   It's a little bit of a project, if you have replaced the laser successfully it shouldn't be to hard for you.   You should hear the the motor move back and forth when the disc is spinning.   If not it could be you amp(driver) chip and/or a gear especially if it exhibits that behavior post recap.

The caps just below the CD drive area are for CD drive function. In all honestly the whole thing should really be recapped though.

I really do not understand exactly which caps i should order.
The replacement chart only says for instance "22uf (x 19)"
but there are dozens of different 22uf capacitors on the spare parts website.
where to get a more precise information ?
thanks !

The page suggest a slew of 16v and 50v, this will work especially if you have bought an assorted value cap kit which will most likely be 16v and 50v.   Technically it would probably be better to stick closer to the original values.

Check the console 5 wiki if you want more detailed info.

If you are going to replace all the caps and you aren't sure what to buy, just get a set from console5. Otherwise, the main reason you would keep the caps close to the same voltage is mainly for fitment. You can definitely go above voltage though. Sometimes that might even be beneficial.
