I wonder how A Boy and His Blob was such a famous video game, in that the NES title even got two song covers done by Brentalfloss and Duane.
Back in the day, I had Rescue of Princess Blobette on the GameBoy, and I thought "this game is no fun", thanks to the stiff controls, unforgiving gameplay and empty feeling castle maze. The one single music track does overstay its welcome pretty fast. One level, that's it?
Yesterday I saw a longplay of the NES version. Well, I think the colours and the more interesting looking backdrops make it a nicer looking game, and the music has more "punch", even though the melody is the same. Still, the rest of the gameplay looks to me the same as the boring GameBoy version. Blergh.
I've got a Boy and His Blob on the Wii for several years now, after seeing Game Sack talking about it in episode 76. The controls are done well, the game is now seperated into multiple worlds and levels, and there are even boss fights. Some of the FMV footage looks inspired by Studio Ghibli. Not a must-have game, but you can certainly spend your time worse.
