Joystick Compatibility w/Supergrafx
« on: January 26, 2018, 09:14:13 AM »
Are there any known incompatibilities with joysticks and the SuperGrafx?  My XE-1 HE Pro does not respond correctly on my SGX, but works fine on my Duo.  I thought it might be due to the built-in multi tap on the joystick but confirmed that a multi tap and two pads work fine on the SGX.

Button mappings appear off:  joystick commands are interpreted as Pause, all button inputs act like button 1, etc.  Same deal if I switch off the SGX switch.

Hori Fight Stick Multi works fine, but *only* in 2–button mode.

Avenue 6 pad wigs out in 6-button mode but works fine in 2 button mode.

Using Chris Covell's Pad Test (I'm running on an Everdrive v2), I see that *any* non-DPad input results in all of the buttons getting pressed.  That is, if you press Select, it lights up Select, Run, I, and II.

This is not how it behaves when running on the Duo.

This is interesting.  The SGX does have an extra parallel interface, so perhaps... somehow... it is creating conflicts with 6-button joy reading, etc?  I'll try the joypad test with my SGX when I have the time.

I guess what I’m trying to narrow down here is:

Is this due to the Everdrive, the console, or the stick?

Is it unique to me, or is this something that affects everyone with this combo?

I was able to solve this for SavagePencil. It was the controller port on the SuperGrafx. Pins 1 and 2, the Run and I buttons were shorting inside the connector. This was causing the system to read as all non-directional buttons were being pressed on the second controller poll, since the first poll only reads directional buttons.

so it was a faulty system, and that's it?

Faulty joystick port, but one that only evidenced itself with the 6-button or joystick with a multi-tap.  The standard joypad worked fine.

weird! well, I'm glad it's not a consistent issue with the machine.

Wobbly PCE control ports can have some weird results.
