When did you stop playing installments of Ys, if ever?
« on: August 19, 2024, 10:20:24 PM »
I stopped with the fourth one.  It was a good length adventure with lots of content, balanced grinding, nice music, and a satisfying ending.

I did try the remakes years later, as well as Ys Origin, but just couldn't get into them.  I also tried Ys V in recent years, but after the Turbo version of IV, it just felt like crap.  I do have a later entry or two on my list, but no rush to get there.

I finished III after all these years, and I'm currently at Darm Tower again in the original, and will play IV again after that.

I wouldn't say I've stopped, but I've not gotten to 8, 9, or 10 yet.  I have 8 and have started it a couple times, only to get distracted and needing to restart;  I have it for Vita and am thinking I should get it for PC to play through instead.

So many games, so little time.

After the 4 on obey, I finished Oath and Origins on PC. I've haven't yet looked into the more modern releases.

im not big on RPGs so Oath, while fantastic, is the only modern one i've played. haven't played Ys VI either. tried origins and didn't like it
Ys IV dawn of ys is still one of the best games ever, fullstop. never played mask of the sun
ys i and ii i prefer the chronicles release on PC, and ys III i like the x68k or genesis versions. i played ys v once and didn't like it at all

Ys V I could never get into. Even after it was translated. Never really made me stop playing Ys games. When Ys 6 / Napishtim came out it blew me away. I love/miss that game engine. Really it's the whole Ys party system that I wish would go away, but it looks like it's here to stay. Thanks weebs. It doesn't keep it fresh and gets tiring having to constantly switch characters. Just give me Adol. I did like 7. Celceta was kinda boring story wise. Ys 8 was a lot better. XI I have yet to start. I still wish the party system would go away.

So, how is this party system?  Is it anything like, say, Soma Bringer on DS?  I liked that one.  Or more like Secret of Mana, which I've actually never played? Or something else entirely?

Honestly, in action RPGs I tend to prefer a single player.  I did basically get the hang of the two player system in Darkstone, though.

Never stopped playing them. Never did actually play five, hard to get into so I'm waiting for a remake. I'll eventually get around to playing the original five though. My three favorite games in the series are Dawn of Ys, Oath in Felghana, and Lacrimosa of Dana(Ys 8). I don't mind the party system at all but I do generally usually prefer just playing as Adol.

Ys X: Nordics comes out October 25th so I'm very much looking forward to that! The party system is still kind of there but it's been narrowed down to just two characters, Adol and some chick whose name I forget at the moment. In the timeline, it's a sequel to Ys 2 . I think it happens something like 6 months later. I've been hearing a lot of great things about it so I'll likely love this game. I already picked up the soundtrack and I'm loving it as I usually do with any of these games aside from 5 which doesn't generally tickle my ears compared to the rest.

I've never like "stopped" playing Ys games, but I've definitely slowed down on playing them like I did back in the day.

Like a few have mentioned, I've started a couple of the more recent ones, with intensions of picking them up again (Ys 8 being the best example), but obsessing over releases like I did 3 and Ys IV (PCE) is a thing of the past. I haven't completed an Ys game since Ys 6 on PSP either!

I'm still playing them!  I'm waiting a bit to pick up Ys X but I'll play it in the next year I'm sure.

The playstyle changes in modern releases can be off putting though if you're use to the traditional style though.
