Any usenet nerds here?
« on: March 03, 2007, 04:47:09 PM »
WAY back in the 90s when I first discovered the internet I also found the rec.games.video.sega usenet list, any of you guys remember that?  For some reason I was just thinking about some old names I actually still remember-

Raymond McKeithen the 3rd (or maybe 2nd, can't remember)- I remember this guy because he posted a ton, only seemed to like one f*cking game (SUCHI PAI or some shit), and was a total prick.

Kendrick Kirwin Chau (sp?)- This guy I remember because he always ended his posts with his initials and something like "... who is still searching for a used copy of Tomb Raider", or "... who wants to find a good space sim".  He was cool though, I see him post on the Gamesx forums now.

Joe Otteson (or something like that)- I remember this guy because he was totally insane, loved Sega, and posted TONS.  Like literally you would see his name 50 times just checking the posts for one day so you couldn't help but memorize it.

Usenet nerd, here. Also, Prodigy nerd, here (though I only had access to Prodigy via a friend... and as a result I was always left wanting more).

Anyway, this may surprise some folks, but I had little interest in online discussions about video games back then. For me, it was all about music, fanzines, politics-lite, toys, movies, books, etc. etc.

The best discussions were about short-lived toy lines, though. There were lots of other folks who had had "Legions of the Universe" (I think that is what they were called) when they were younger and it was funny as hell to talk about it. I still think it was a kool toyline, but until writing this post I couldn't remember what they were called! Thanks nodtveidt for stirring up my stagnant brain cells! I can't believe I remembered what they were called just now (I've tried many times over the years since then).

OK, those weren't the best discussions, but they stand out now (in 2007) because I can't find anyone else who remembers the likes of Sprial Zone, Legions of the Universe, etc. I also loved finding out all I could about The Human League! Ha!

Haha I figured you probably were a usenet guy Steve, awesome.  Dude speaking of old toy lines, you remember Jason and the Wheeled Warriors?  Man I loved those toys, but nobody else seems to remember them.

I don't think I ever played with an actual toy, but I vaguely remember commercials / cartoon on tv. For some reason, I don't think any of my friends / family ever had one of these toys... which sucks because the cartoon intro I just watched on YouTube looked awesome :). Why the hell did I waste my time watching Photon when it would have been better spent elsewhere?

I thought it was Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors. Those toys were cool but lacked figures for the good guys.which kinda sucked. Wasn't too hot on the cartoon though, more Saban muck.

Maybe it was Jayce, I was really young when I watched it.  I just remember he was searching for his father and the show went off the air before they wrapped up the storyline, I was pissed.  Kind of like Pirates of Dark Water where they never finished the series, man that sucked.

Total usenet nerd here.  When I first started with the internet it took too damn long for anything to load up on dial-up, so usenet via telnet (nothing but DOS-like text screens, but it was fast) was how I spent a lot of my early internet days.  I'm sure I made more than a few posts on rec.games.video.sega.  At one time I think I was subscribed to like 20 different video game and anime lists.

Wouldn't specify myself as a USENET nerd but when I 1st got on the Internet in 1992 I thought USENET was the Internet (aside from eMail).  You know, like the main attraction.

I was aware of web pages, but I was using DOS back in those days (386sx 16MHz ftw) and everything was text based anyway.  USENET was a lot less static-appearing than the web because people responded quickly on USENET typically, so USENET was much more exciting.

At the time, local BBS's had better graphical qualities.  ANSI art and all.

One of the first things I did when I first got on the internet years ago (1996?) was to get on usenet. Mostly the political newsgroups (full of some of the scariest people on the internet) but also r.g.v.s. I seem to remember a pesky little troll from that group called omarichu, from around 1999 to 2001. at the time I wanted to smack him, but now I don't think I would care; he's probably miserable enough anyway.

Usenet was life before graphics, man. I miss the old days sometimes.
