Remember that thread about the crappy laptops a while back?
« on: November 04, 2007, 01:58:16 PM »
Well for everyone who actually wanted one, you can now order one and have a second one donated to a child in a third-world country absolutely free. It's called the Give One Get One initiative and it absolutely backs the point of me and all the other anti-OLPCers on the board.

Seriously, first they charge $100, saying they can't go any lower, now they're GIVING THEM AWAY!? What did I tell you, corporate lies.  [-(  [-X

Here's more info. And some more here.

Secondly, according to this press-release, the company I work for is now giving away 1 year HotSpot subscriptions to people who buy these things. At least I'm just a CSR for the prepaid, so I won't have to field any of these calls.

Yeah I remember that thread, it wasn't that long ago.

I tried to go and find the thread about it to see what we said about it, but after going back 5 pages I still couldn't find it.

Do you know why?

Actually no I don't and I couldn't find it either and I wish I could because it was a fascinating and insightful discussion and since I can't find it I had to make a continuation of it to continue on the discussion and hopefully with this new evidence bring some change to the existing viewpoints and possibly open up new viewpoints because thats what discussion forums are all about and I don't appreciate your psuedo-hidden attempt to deride me for making what you deem is a pointless thread even though it isn't pointless and you know it you just hate me for some reason and you're staring at your gyrating Japanese girl avatar to even think about that and even recall this thread where there was actually a big division of who was on what side and a lot of name calling was made and it was sort of a flame war but not really because we had a good discussion and we learned a lot of things about corporate greed and how to make cheap laptops and the social sciences of running a country including the priorities of taking care of a country's basic needs before providing them with superfluous technology that they don't really need but this was countered by the fact that in this day and age the technology controls the processes that provide people with their basic needs so in a sense this technology should come first but that brings a rather sad conclusion to the table and that conclusion is that we are so dominated by technology that we let it take over our basic needs and if something was to ever happen to technology we would not be prepared to go back to our old ways and we would wither up and die however this is dismissed as just a cautionary scenario by some who believe that we're not that bad off and that we could revert and re-invent ourselves and prove ourselves the dominant species once more but you also have to ask if we are even the dominant species at all because animals and insects have been around forever as well and they didn't need technology to accomplish this and at the end of the day it just becomes a story of man versus nature as it always does when Hollywood runs out of ideas although lately there haven't been many of those movies because I think people get bored of them easily and also because nature is harder to render with CGI than a building so that could be a factor as well.

I'm bored.

BTW, here is right said thread. It is too sexy for it's shirt.

Are you being funny, Kitsune?  The two laptops (one to keep and one to donate) for $400 was the same deal discussed in the last thread.  That's pretty cool, though, that they come with a free year of HotSpot usage.  What's the real value for that?

P.S. - Please use some punctuation.  My ol' eyeballs can't handle those giant sentences.  :)

My bad.  And according to that site, a year of HotSpot is like $589.99 or something. 0_o

Kitsune, thanks for the reminder. According to the first article, the order window doesn't open until November 12, which is next Monday...

As Necromancer pointed out, the idea of the buy one, get one program was already discussed in the last thread, so that's nothing new.

The hot spot access is new, so thanks for letting us know about that.

One thing I'm wondering is whether or not U.S. buyers will have the option of getting a model with a dual-language keyboard, with English letters as well as something else.
