GAME gAVEL IS DEAD
« on: April 13, 2009, 07:36:58 AM »
JUST RECEIVED THIS EMAIL:

I started GameGavel.com just over a year ago with the hopes of it becoming the go-to source for video game auctions. It would seem that there are a number of factors that could be the culprit behind our meager success, but I can only blame insufficient promotion on my part. It would be all to easy to look at the economy and make the case that it is to blame, or that eBay is too ingrained into our lives to compete with. But no, just plain and simple, a lack of effective advertising. I am sad to have to sell GameGavel.com or to just close it down, but the tough decision has to be made for what I believe is the next step; closing it down and selling off it's assets. If you are interested in becoming the new owner of GameGavel.com feel free to contact us to discuss the details.

For the buyers and sellers, please finalize any business dealings that you have outstanding and trade email addresses to ensure continuity between you. After April 15, 2009 GameGavel.com will officially shut down. Thank you for all of your support over the past 15 months, it has been a real treat seeing the site grow and items being bought and sold amongst a great community!

That's unfortunate.  I would've given 'em some business, but there was never anything of interest whenever I peeked in.

That's too bad.  I bought a few things using the site -- I just haven't bought any video-game related material in the past year or so.

Tough business model when you aren't charging anyone, really.  (Well, advertising's the only way for revenue in this case, but that market's down the toilet as well these days)

Indeed, gamegavel works when you have a huge # of vendors and consumers, gamers, whatever. Otherwise, it won't be seen as worthwhile (a waste of time/energy).

I remember trying Yahoo Auctions(?) (it was Yahoo's ebay) and it was pathetic. And I really tried to use it, but ultimately it was a huge waste of my time and energy.

Back when I started buying old games online (1997 or so?) Yahoo auctions was where I got most of my stuff. Seemed like a smorgasboard at the time. Somewhere along the line I discovered Ebay, and I started shopping at yahoo less and less.

Yeah, it's unfortunate that GG couldn't make a go of it. :( I ordered one or two things from them and it worked great.

As stated I logged into gamegavel but never saw enough inventory for what I was looking for (PC Engine / Turbo) to keep interest / keep logging in. Too bad because I liked the concept. I have bought from Chuckwagon and it was a good shopping experience.

Here is the email I received (I deleted the beginning part which was about people paying fees on time):

Quote
Hey Chuckwagon Community,

...................................

Now, back to the fun stuff :)

ChaseTheChuckwagon.com Acquires GameGavel.com

As of last night ChaseTheChuckwagon.com has acquired competing video gaming auction site GameGavel.com.  Jasen Hicks, the owner of GG has not been able to give the attention needed to keep his site going in the direction he wanted so we negotiated a buy out of his domain name.  In a few days GameGavel.com will be redirected to ChaseTheChuckwagon.com and his website will be shut down.  It is my intention to continue co-branding both names, so pick the name you like and go with it.  This should also go along way to bringing in a more diverse group of gamers, as GameGavel.com is a more "universal" name than ChaseTheChuckwagon.com.

For all existing ChaseTheChuckwagon.com members this is a very good thing as we will reap the benefits of 15 months of GameGavel.com links and threads floating around the net that will now point to us.  I am hoping this will help aid our growth and continue our efforts to become the best place to buy and sell games.

Thanks again to all of you for sticking with us while we grow,

Mike Kennedy, CEO
ChaseTheChuckwagon.com
