Kieth Courage, BAD?!?!? One man's story!

Ok, I was, oh say 8 or 9...got the GOD of systems the Atari 2600...found it hidden in my mother's closet on Christmas Eve day while they were shopping, I was almost documented as the youngest person to have a coronary!!! Excitement is NOT the word.  Ok, fast foward to College grad and living with, who is now, my wife.  I completlely and absolutely missed everything NES.....nothing, not a glimps at a game.  Yes I missed the WHOLE NES game craze!  So I convinced her to let me buy a game system....cool, which one?   Good job, good money, they were in an enclosed kiosk at Service Merchandise(now OOB).  GOD that TG16 looked great, but Sega was so sharp.....this that, this that ARRRRRGGGG!!!!!   I brought home the TG16 and played Keith Courage In Alpha Zones for ever.  I was in love again!!!  That giddy feeling of a Christmas morning, all tucked in with a nice blanket and some hot cocoa. I would give ANYTHING to do it all again!!!   Now, an avid gamer with a life(lol) two kids and at least 3 of every system ever made, I look back and think, that Keith...he re-introduced me to that Christmas of long ago, and for that feeling of elation and the pure gaming experience, I am forever greatful.
Thanks for listening!

nice story, great memories.   thats how I feel about Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap for the Master System, which I was given on Christmas Eve, 1989.

I got Keith Courage with my TurboGrafx in the fall of 1990, over a year after it came out in the U.S.      heh, did you ever play Grandzort for the SuperGrafx (Japan only)   ??  that game is meant to be the sequel to Keith Courage :)

You guys were lucky to have the system back when it came out. I was maybe two or three when the Turbo Grafx 16 made it's way out here, but me and my bros got a Genesis for Christmas and I had great times with that. I got into the Turbo scene about three years ago and it put a great change on my life. Those summers I had with Turbo emulation were great and last year I bought myself a Duo and have over 60 games and love 'em all ;) .

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

well, I didn't exactly get NEC's console when it first came out.  the PC Engine came out in Oct 1987,   the TurboGrafx came out in late summer 1989.   I didn't get mine until fall of 1990, 3 years after it came out in Japan, and over a year after it came out in the U.S.     8)

I only played the NES at my buddy's house back in the day.  Aside from an Atari 2600 and a Commodore 64 :P  the Turbo was my FIRST system.  I loved me some Keith Courage.  I've been meaning to play it all the way through again.

I got it almost immediately after it came out, although it was somewhat by accident.  It was Christmas and my dad said he'd buy me a new console.  I actually had a Sega Genesis in my hands and took it up to the checkout counter.  When they rang it up, my dad said it was too expensive and that I should get "that other one."  I had no problem with that, because I saw ads for Bonk's Adventure and was dying to play it.

So I guess I have my dad to thank for my Turbo obsession.
Games I Need: Bonk 3 (HuCard), Legend of Hero Tonma, Magical Chase, Soldier Blade, Super Air Zonk.

Got one to sell? PM me!

In case y'all didn't know, Keith Courage in Alpha Zones is based off an anime series (Eiyu Majin Wataru).

in the winter of 91-92 i purchased the annual issue of EGM where they rate all of the systems.  i had been living in a small town with my NES for a few years and nobody i knew owned anything else.  this issue of EGM gave me some real information and introduced me to all of the other systems.  the Turbo Grafx and Sega Master System immediately struck me as cool and mysterious underdog systems (they were also cheap).   i starting saving my cash for a turbo grafx and checked Toys r Us every couple weeks but they were all sold out of TG16 systems and said they would have more in "a week or two."  a month passed and one day i saw the SMS II marked down to $50.
IMO, the sms II is just about the coolest looking system ever so i dropped my TG16 savings and picked up the 8-bit Sega together with Y's the Vanished Omens and Golden Axe.  i didn't buy the Turbo until two months later.  I had some good times playing Keith Courage as well as Pacland, Dungeon Explore, Parasol Stars and even Deep Blue.  I only ever got about 8 hucards for it before i foolishly sold it at a garage sale (i kept the Sega).  I was frustrated with the TG because i was really into RPGs at the time and the Turbochips kinda sucked when in came to that genre.  The CD games looked awesome and I really wanted a Duo or CD attachment but my paper route only paid about $30 a month and they were hopelessly out of my price range.  It also irked me that i couldn't play any two player games without a 20 dollar turbo tap and some more 20 dollar controllers on top of that.  So i sold the TG16 and played SNES games for a few dark years before i picked up a used Duo in 97.

To this day I've never owned Keith Courage.  I do have Wataru though.  However, my friend got the TG16 for Christmas back when they first came out.  We played Keith Courage for a long time.  I'd already had a PCEngine and wasn't familiar with Wataru at the time (we lived in Japan).

Anyway, I liked the game a lot.  Lucky for us, my friend and I eventually found a hint book that had a bunch of Wataru codes and secrets and they worked on Keith Courage!  It was always cool to see that secret options screen in Japanese.  We were taking Japanese language classes at the time and we pretty much figured out on our own what each option meant (by reading rather than trial and error).

Great times for sure.

Aeroblasters is one these kinda games for me.

I requested it as a possible birthday or X-Mas present(they're a few days apart)after renting it several times and played it along with Ninja Spirit on Christ-mas day through the night and regularly for weeks months after.

Its still one of my favorites and the first Turbochip I load up every time I pull out my hucard binder.

Thats funny I would have just as soon got rid of the mech part and expanded on the rest. But I'm really into Dragon's Curse, Dynastic Hero, and the whole Monster World series.
