Issues with a duo-r?
« on: September 29, 2010, 07:58:51 PM »
well, sad to say, but i'm coming across a couple issues with my duo-r.
notably, with cd games.
I never have issues with getting the games to run, so i can at least play them, but on EVERY game i try, i encounter some audio issues.
usually, it's one of two things, either the cd music will just stop altogether, or it will skip around, sometimes cutting into different tracks.
now, my first thought was that there was a scratch on the game, so i tried all of mine (~8 cd games) and all gave me the same issue at some point.
i've already taken the initial step of cleaning all the discs, and the laser lens itself, but no help, all the games still give me trouble.
so i'm left to think that the issue is with the laser itself, or maybe the assembly, so i want to try to open the system and give it a good internal cleaning, and lube the cd parts.
unfortunately, i don't have the necessary screwdriver bits to open my system, what kind are they?

does anyone else have any ideas on what to do about the issue with the system?

The Duo-R must have security bits like the US Duo.  They're a 4.5mm security bit.  Some people have had success using a 4mm nutdriver on them and then replacing them with #4 x 1/2 long philips pan screws.

As far as the sound issue... I haven't heard of too many troubles on the Duo-R, but on a US duo typically that is a sign of either laser adjustment, a worn out laser (in which adjustment wont improve things) or leaking capacitors (causing a fluctuation of the power supply to the laser)  I'd get ahold of user Chop5 or one of the other super techy people. :P

Edit:
Here's the cheapest bit I can find....

well, thanks for the help, but those are definitely NOT the screws on my system.
on mine, they look pretty much like torx bits, but there's a bump in the middle, keeping the traditional bits out.

I really hope my issue is just a laser adjustment, but if it's not, is there a way to replace it?

Security torx heads, eh?  Sounds like you need this bit set.

Lucky :)  Those are a lot easier to find than the silly security bits that the regular Duo uses.

so, i got the screwdriver, it was a Torx 10 security bit, I ended up getting a set at Menards pretty cheap.
I looked at the CD assembly, and it looked well enough, but there was a small piece of something in one of the gears, so i pulled that out.
BAM! problem mostly fixed, but still some issues, such as with the speaking parts of Ys I, and the opening of Kunio's Soccer.
Is there a tutorial or something on adjusting Duo-R lasers?

one more question:
I'm wanting to do the region mod, so i need to get at the card port.
the thing is, there's a shield over it, so i can't get easy access to the connectors.
does anyone know how to remove it?
