what do you all think of this version?  It's pretty good but i personally like the play control on the NES game better.
What bugs me about DD2 conpared to the NES version is sometimes with TG/PCE action/platform games on CD i have the feeling that the character i'm controlling in the game isn't really interacting with what's going on on screen.  does anyone else notice this?  i've also noticed it with Exile 2, Valis 2, Shadow of the Beast, etc.  The number one example of course would be Fighting Street.
It's like i swing my sword or throw a punch and the enemy goes flying back but i never really feel like we connected.  I don't get this feeling with turbchip games.  maybe it's just because of the programming on early CDs.

Oh yeah, I remember there being a spin kick or hurricane kind of move on DD2 but i can't remember how to do it.  how do you pull off the move?

yes, a well-made game will have that visceral feeling that you are really connecting and interacting with the elements in a game: whether it is landing on a platform, punching an opponent, slashing an enemy, shooting a boss, etc.

Sometimes, if a game has "floaty" controls you feel disconnected from the game. Other times, even if the control is more precise, a game still fails to deliver that visceral feeling.

Shububinaman 3 SCD... this is a game that I would add to your list.

DD2.... I was a bit dissappointed by this SCD, but a lot of this had to do with the fact that I paid a lot of money for it and had high expectations PLUS I am no longer a big fan of the beat-em-up genre (this was news to me, actually, but I finally realized I had been avoiding the genre for a reason).

SO, I need to give DD2 another chance. I was hoping the action would be a little faster (i.e. enemies are sluggish, but that's how they are in the original DD) and I hoped that the environments would be more interactive (i.e. most of the stages are too flat and linear... you don't play on different planes -- either by climbing or jumping -- to add additional strategy...)

That said, I really do need to give the game another chance. I actually liked some of the cheezy music and thought it added to the game's vibe (the "jungle sounds" for stage 2?... the 80's "dance" music... wonderful!).

I can't really remember the cinemas, but I remember I actually enjoyed seeing each successive scene -- it is like you are in an extended "chase sceen" in a typical Hollywood action films. It actually works, though the art has a lot to be desired.

Yes, the overall aesthetics of the game could have been better... it should have felt more than an "enhanced" NES game.

Music wise, the NES version is better. I was expecting the PC Engine version to have remixes of the NES tunes.

I kinda hate the stage 1 music, well it's not so much for the music, but the sounds of laughing and the screaming woman rather take away the enjoyment.

But I think the gameplay itself is a tie.

I seem to recall that I would rapidly press both attack buttons on the NES version.  It was actually a matter of proper timing though.  I used an NES MAX controller, and You could just hold both rapid fire buttons down to perform this attack with perfection.

On the nes I still can't get that flying knee kick consistently. I usually pull it off by simply mashing the buttons.

I'd have to play the NES version more to compare, but I love the PCE SCD version! The controls do feel a little "sluggish" maybe, but I think that's because most people may not be used to the control of the game and once you are more familar with the controls, it's actually quite intelligent because it allows the player more and faster defense, in a way. I am referring to how there is that back kick in this game.

Personally, I thought the music in the PCE SCD version was excellent! Very unqiue and the 80's dance/pop style adds some catchy flavor. The cinemas in the PCE SCD version are a nice treat as well.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

In the NES version to do the hurricane kick you jump up in the air by hitting both buttons, then rapidly press one after the other, so it goes like A+B then A followed quickly by B.  I could consistently pull it off about 9/10 tries with that method.  You have to be fast though, so your guys button mashing method would probably yield about the same results.  I never liked button mashing though, I always liked knowing the proper commands and trying to do them consistently, hah.

This is correct, but I seem to remember that jump kicking was executed similarly.  Perhaps it was a directional jump, rather than stationary.

I was just recently playing the arcade version, & I must say, I do like the layout of the PCE version a hell of alot more.  The music, the first stage stinks all together imo, but the rest is great.  I think there's a Genesis version of this game, I'll have to try that, see how it compares.
